Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 8, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about a new Vonage tv ad campaign that begins tomorrow, as well as find out about a new local area code availability for Vonage in Delaware.. We'll go over Vonage Forum thread about Vonage adapters. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price. And because today is Friday, we'll be doing our "In The Blogs" feature.

In The News

New Vonage Ads To Debut Tomorrow

Havas' Arnold, which is Vonage's ad agency in Boston,  has developed a campaign introduces the theme "One smart decision" in a quintet of spots that break this week.

Adweek magazine notes that in keeping with the general tone of earlier ad efforts, the latest spots show people about to do stupid things. A flying Vonage box thrown out of an elaborately painted van, known as the "Von," interrupts them.

Spots will include a woman who is about to swim with sharks and a "geek" who dumps his hot girlfriend.

"Clearly there was a need to further evolve Vonage's advertising campaign efforts to reach a broader audience," said Mike Snyder, client CEO. "Vonage is now targeting larger demographics as it has now broadened its marketing campaigns to include sports and entertainment advertising and sponsorships."

The ad debuts tomorrow during the Notre Dame-Penn State football game. Adweek reports these ads will continue to air during the collegiate and professional football seasons, as well as on cable networks including MTV, Bravo and CNN. The Vonage van will also appear at live sporting events throughout the U.S.

Vonage Expands Local Phone Number Availability In Delaware

Vonage today announced it now offers its subscribers the ability to choose from the following Delaware rate centers: Camden, Delmar, Felton, Harrington, Milton, Rehoboth, Seaford, Selbyville and Smyrna. A rate center is the geographic area used for issuing phone numbers. There can be many rate centers within one area code.

This expansion offers subscribers the opportunity to further localize their telephone number, as they are now able to select numbers from towns more representative of their geographic location or make it easier for them to maintain their own phone number within the popular (302) area code.

"With Vonage's further expansion into the First State, individuals and small businesses will be able to further localize their phone number as they can now keep their local number when they sign up for Vonage's feature-rich, flat-rate calling plans," said Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America Inc.

Vonage-Sponsored Drivers In Big Race Tomorrow

Canada's David Empringham will join series regulars Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel for the Pacific Coast Motorsports #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype tomorrow. This will be at the conclusion of the  Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series event, which is the  9-hour 'Discount Tire Sunchaser' at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.

"I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to top and tail the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series season in the #89 Pontiac Riley alongside Alex and Ryan," says Empringham, who is from Toronto. "The team's firmly on a roll with their results from the previous two races so hopefully I can do my bit to keep the momentum going and go out on a high behind the wheel of a competitive entry. Based on last month's test at the track there's no reason why we can't be up there this weekend."

"Miller Motorsports Park is a great track and we had fun testing there for a couple of days in July. I'm really looking forward to heading back there for this weekend's season finale and I'm equally happy to have Dave Empringham share the car with us," adds Ryan. He adds that last "Saturday's result at Infineon was well deserved; we had a quick car so hopefully we'll carry that pace straight into Miller Motorsports Park. The long track layout suits the Daytona Prototypes so it should be a fun nine hours!"

"It's great to be going somewhere that's new to everyone," adds Alex. "Miller's a stunning race track and I'm really keen to get out there and see what we can do. I think we've got one of the strongest line-up's with the addition of Dave's speed and experience, that, combined with our recent results, should make for a very competitive package!"

On The Vonage Voip Forum

How to connect Vonage adapter directly to cable modem? is a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member johndoe88.

"I have Comcast cable. When I try to connect my PAP2 adapter directly to the modem, it cannot connect to the internet (power/internet lights keep blinking). I think this is because Comcast only allows the MAC address from my PC to connect to the Internet," johndoe88 writes. "Currently, I have my router clone my computer's MAC address, so the router can connect to the modem."

Next, johndoe88 provides his setup: Comcast modem -> D-Link DI-524 router -> PAP2 adapter / PC.

"Is there a way to force the PAP2 adapter to have my PC MAC address?" he asks.

"As far as I know and I just checked the user's guide for the PAP2, it requires it to sit behind a router and hence it does not have any router capabilities," Vonage Forum Member mundy5 responds. "Even within the voice response menu, it does not list as an option, cloning MAC address.

Mundy5 then adds he's sure this is because everything has to be done by phone and it would be a challenge to type in both letters and numbers.

"I believe what you are looking to do is not an available option on the PAP2," he adds.

Jumping in the thread next is a Vonage Forum Member with the user name, sincemay2004.

"You are correct that the MAC is probably the problem. I don't believe the Pap2 or Pap2v2 allows for changing the MAC; Only confirming," he writes. "The modem retains the MAC in a form of cache memory, I believe. It can be reset, but I couldn't tell you how. A series of Reboot and Plug/Unplug actions I believe. Somewhere on the boards is a description of how.

"Which modem do you have?," he asks johndoe88. I will take a look."

Next at bat is Vonage Forum Member gmchenry.

"Interesting. Comcast here in Colorado doesn't restrict connections behind the cable modem to a certain pre-defined MAC address. The MAC of the cable modem is the defining factor for connectivity to the network," he writes. "The MAC addresses on devices on the end-user's side of the cable modem shouldn't matter."

Then after reading what gmchenry posted, mundy5 came back on this thread with another post.

"Yes, you are correct if you do not install with the CD that comes with Comcast," he writes. "If you have it installed with the CD that comes with it, it does recognize that you are connecting different computers to the network so perhaps that's his setup. "

Mundy5 explains that he knows this because done it with both with and without the CD.

"When installed without the CD, they only register your MAC for the modem," mundy5 points out.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog, passes along a line he heard about Vonage going public, as well as links to Tom Keating's blog post about number portability.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG writes about the competitive threat to Vonage from open source PBX applications such as Asterisk.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about reports going around that Vonage has- or is about to have- a new public relations agency to deal with the media.

On David Isenberg's, he didn't blog this week (he's been building and moving into a new home, but a few weeks ago he wrote a powerful post that seems to acknowledge that net neutrality (which Vonage wants by the way) is not going to pass in this Congressional session or be enforced by the FCC. He then addressed to the big telcos that since you argue that net neutrality rules are unnecessary, now is your chance to prove this is true by playing fair.

Jeff Pulver of has lots of posts about the Fall VON show, which will be in Boston starting a Monday.. Incidentally, a Tuesday keynote address will be given by Jeff Citron, Chairman and Chief Strategist of Vonage. His keynote will be: Industry Perspective: Mobility in a Converging World. I plan to drive up and attend. Probably I will get to see many of the same bloggers I am writing about now.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog writes about where he sees Vonage heading, in the light of Vonage's announcement this week they have more than two million subscribers.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog writes about what he thinks may be a change in the type of television advertising Vonage does. He also writes about number portability.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) writes about the interview Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron did in the New York Times.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog writes about that interview as well.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog has a link to his latest podcast about VoIP.

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog wrote about some problems a softphone competitor of Vonage (not Skype) has been having with their users dialing toll-free"800" numbers.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP links to a blog entry that makes a lot of controversial assertions about Vonage and its motivations for going public.

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy notes that in the interview he gave the New York Times this week, Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron said that enhancing Vonage's customer service is a top priority. Citron said Vonage was hiring more customer service workers and enhancing the training they receive..

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new MySpace blog I was looking at by a blogger from Eugene, Oregon named valapalooza, she writes, "actually I was online yesterday and Patrick wrote and asked for my number so he could call me right then. that was a surprise, for a couple reasons: he lives in Korea, so you'd think it would cost a fortune to call the states and you wouldn't just call up anyone, but he's got that Vonage thing." Here's the link to that post.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning.
