Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll see what famous U.S. college football teams Vonage will sponsor webcasts for, as well as find out about a new local area code availability for Vonage in Kentucky. We'll go over Vonage Forum threads about router and adapter problems. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage To Sponsor Notre Dame Football Webcasts says it will offer a pre- and post-game live "webcast" feature surrounding the Notre Dame TV coverage. This feature will be sponsored by Vonage. 

Called "Notre Dame Countdown to Kickoff" and the "Notre Dame Post Game Report," these live webcasts on will originate from Notre Dame Stadium and extend the NBC television broadcasts of Notre Dame games by additional coverage. Notre Dame fans can visit at halftime to see live coverage of the performances of the Fighting Irish marching band as well as the visiting school's band.

Vonage Expands Area Code Availability In Kentucky

Vonage announced it now offers Oak Grove, Kentucky's s local area code, which is 270. 

Oak Grove, which has more than 7,000 residents, is in Christian County, which is in southwestern Kentucky.

Vonage Stock Price Report

Although we usually include this information under a separate heading called "Vonage Stock Market Report," I will start to put this in the news section of the Digest when there are major (3% or more) price swings from one day to the next.

Wednesday was one of those days.

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.93 a share, which was down 31 cents from Tuesday's $8.24 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Wednesday totaled  980,500 shares.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread entitled Opening ports in Netgear's CG814WG v2 router for Vonage Voip was begun by Vonage Forum Member chameleon.

First, chameleon explains that he recently upgraded to a NetGear CG814WG v2 Modem-&-Router, with his Vonage softphone account. He chose NetGear because that is the router of choice that his ISP prefers for wireless home networks. But the problem is that when he calls his PC via his Vonage softphone account, it doesn't work. 

"NetGear tech support sent me to a page that lists the ports which must be opened to cure the problem; at the top of this page is the following caveat. 'All NETGEAR router ports are closed by default to incoming traffic'," he explains. "Worse, the page states that Vonage uses Ports 5060 - 5070, and, Ports 10000 - 25000. Yikes! 

"At first," chameleon explains further, "Netgear's tech's told me I had to 'Open' the correct ports by using port forwarding, entering the same port # for each Start Port and End Port in the port forwarding config. section. However, a venerable and reliable member of this forum tells me this is probably not the answer, and neither is "Port triggering" which was Netgear's 2nd suggestion.

One of our "venerable and reliable members," xcrunxc, joins the thread with suggestions.

"Instead of forwarding all of those ports, you can try a quicker solution of just putting your computer into the DMZ of your router/modem," he writes. "This is easier to set up, and will be a much quicker test to see if this is really the issue. 

"Putting a computer into the DMZ of the router, effectively forwards every port to it," xcrunxc explains. "If the router gets a request that it doesn't know what to do with then it will pass it on to the computer to handle, this would include any incoming Vonage packets. While this could be a security risk in the long run, doing it just for testing here should be just fine."

Then xcrunxc notes the steps the Netgear page shows to enable DMZ on chameleon's NetGear device:

To assign a computer or server to be a Default DMZ server, follow these steps:
1. Click WAN Setup link on the Advanced section of the main menu.
2. Type the IP address for that server. To remove the default DMZ server, replace the IP address
numbers with all zeros.
3. Click Apply.

Because new Vonage Forum Member jduffy's Terminal Adapter he uses with his Vonage service has been acting up, he decided to launch a new Vonage Forum thread which he calls, Vonage TA acted strange today - not sure what was happening.

"I was on a conference call for close to an hour today. All of a sudden the call dropped. No biggie, call was almost over. Anyway, I looked at the Linksys PAP2 TA and the Ethernet light continued to flash. So I figured Vonage must be downloading new firmware or such," he writes.

However for jduffy, things didn't turn out that simply.

"But heck the Ethernet light continues to flash (rapidly) and has been for more than an hour," he points out. Seems like if it was downloading it would have been enough time." Phone still works o.k. 

"Anyone experience this or can explain why the condition has gone on so long?," asks jduffy. "Can a firmware/software update take that long when I have a 6Mbps download speed?

"I don't have a PAP2, but with my VT2442, and the RTP300 before that, the Ethernet light always flashes," explains Steve48 who is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. It's the power light that blinks during software downloads.

And then xcrunxc joins this thread, offering some useful information.

"Power, Phone and Internet would be blinking if there was a firmware update being downloaded," he points out. "If it was the Ethernet light blinking that simply means there is activity on the WAN(Internet) port of the device." 

Next, xcrunxc points out that he has heard that an "Internet connection they were using for a proxy group in their NY Location dropped today, and all calls were dropped that were currently connected to it. All of those devices should have failed over to another proxy however and re-established service, but the proxy it connected to could have been across the county, which may explain the unusual behavior of your device."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
