Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll mention where Vonage has just expanded their area code availability to. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about issues with the VT 2442, as well as an adapter-related thread. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Expands Area Code Availability In Michigan

Vonage announced it now offers Coral, Michigan's local area code. The location is the northern section of Maple Valley Township, which is in Montcalm County.

 Vonage customers in Montcalm County can now keep their current numbers or choose telephone numbers within the popular (231) area code. Vonage continues to offer local area code selection in the following Michigan locations: Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.

Vonage Stock Price Report

Although we usually include this information under a separate heading called "Vonage Stock Market Report," I will start to put this in the news section of the Digest when there are major (3% or more) price swings from one day to the next.

Tuesday was one of those days.

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.24 a share, which was down  66 cents from Friday's $8.90 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Tuesday calculated to 2,210,300 shares.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

An interesting new Vonage Forum thread entitled VT2442 not allowing connection to internet has been opened by new Vonage Forum Member nevin.

"I have wired everything up correctly, but the power light never gets past the two blinking lights," he writes. "My PowerBook cannot see the internet through the TA (Terminal Adapter) and I'm about to throw it out of the window." Any advice would be great.

Well, nevin doesn't have to throw his Motorola VT2442. That's because he's gotten some very helpful advice from two Vonage Forum Members who know about this stuff.

"Two blinks from the power light means that it is trying to pull down an IP address, and if it is doing that for a long time it means it is failing to get one," writes Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc.

"I just glanced over the Bulldog page and it appears to be using PPPoE authentication. This means that you would need to put your username and password into the Vonage router if you wanted that to get (an) Internet connection." 

Then xcrunxc tells nevin that to do this he should browse to with a computer plugged into the ethernet port of the VT2442, log in using the username router and password router. 

"Click on setup and then on the left hand side of the page click on WAN setup. Switch the drop down box from DHCP to PPPoE and enter your Username and Password from your DSL," he advises. "Reboot the router(unplug/replug) if it doesn't do this itself, and then you should be up and running with Vonage."

Then Steve48, who is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week, adds his expertise to this thread.

"Also keep in mind that your computer is probably currently configured to use PPPoE. You'll want to change it to getting its IP dynamically (DHCP) so that it connects with the VT2442 when you plug it in," advises Steve. "You'll be leaving it this way once Vonage is working, with the VT2442 doing the PPPoE bit for your system.

Then Steve suggests to nevin to be sure to write down your current network settings before changing anything.

And then nevin responds to both xcrunxc and Steve48:

"Cheers guys. My Powerbook wasn't configured to use PPPoe it was just picking up an address over my Belkin's wireless router but everything else that you have mentioned appears to make sense. Thanks again."

A large number of growing small businesses use Vonage. So it is not surprising that new Vonage Forum Member Dispatcher 35 has begun a new Vonage Forum thread that he calls, Looking to expand / Need help and advice.

"Currently I have 2 Vonage numbers and a local Verizon number as a back up on my home computer," Dispatcher 35 tells us.

"I might have a need to add more lines and was wondering if it could be done. Due to the fact I live in a condo I only have inside wiring available for 1 more line," he adds. "Virtual numbers are not possible because I have to be able to tell what line the call comes in on.

Then Dispatcher 35 tells us that currently his broadband modem is connected to the Motorola MTA. 

"Off the MTA I am running lines off both of the phone jacks and to my Linksys router."

"Now my questions - Can I hook up another MTA to gain two more lines?," Dispatcher writes. "Where would I put another MTA? Can I mix and match services (i.e. Vonage and Verizon VoiceWing or Vonage and italkbb)?"

Then Steve48 answers.

"Yes you can," our Vonage Forum Member of the Week tells Dispatcher. "You can connect another MTA to one of the LAN ports on the first one (though you may have to work some issues to make sure that the two MTAs don't have the same subnet addressing)." 

But next, Steve48 suggests a superior way of going about it.

"A better solution is to get a good router with QoS capability and use it to feed both MTAs," Steve48 writes. "Of course, you need to be sure that your internet service is up to the task of handling all those phone lines."

Next, Vonage Forum Member brian188 is up with his thoughts.

"Just be sure your ISP can handle 4+ simultaneous phone calls," he posts to Dispatcher35. "If so, will you need to use the web while using 4 lines? Most likely if you have 4 calls going at once you won't able to surf the web..."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
