Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 5, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 5, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll spotlight Vonage's big announcement today and see what Jeff Citron thinks about Vonage's future going forward. We'll check up on how a racing team co-sponsored by Vonage did over the Labor Day weekend, and we also look at a major distribution deal signed by Vonage for the U.K.. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about running Vonage SoftPhone on an Intel-powered Mac OS X, as well as a thread about Vonage billing policies as associated with data usage.  Because we didn't have an issue yesterday (Labor Day weekend here in the U.S.) our Vonage Forum Member of the Week announcement, which we usually make on Monday, will be made today. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Reaches Two Million Subscribers

It was announced this morning that Vonage has now reached two million subscribers.

In anticipation of this announcement, Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron gave an interview to the New York Time's Matt Richter. The interview ran in Monday's editions.

Richtel wrote that Citron told him Vonage also needed to stand out from the competition by becoming more than a garden-variety provider of Internet telephone service. Consequently, the company is trying to push the capabilities of Internet calling by developing new products, notably the V-Phone.

"Introduced July 1, the V-Phone is the size of a cigarette lighter and can be plugged into a USB. port on any Internet-connected computer," Richtel explained. "A Vonage customer plugs a headset into the other end of the $40 device and can then place or receive calls over the Internet, using a Vonage phone number, from anywhere in the world.

Richtel added that Citron hopes it will become a signature of Vonage’s effort to define itself as a service that is loaded with features and focused on portability.

“Portability will win out over time, “ Citron said. “The richest features will take over old stodgy phone service over time.” He added that Vonage “wants to make you reachable as many places as possible with one number.”

Then Richtel added that Citron said Vonage also wanted to give customers more control over who reached them and where.

"He envisions a time when subscribers might send certain callers automatically to voice mail — for instance, work calls during a weekend — or put various priorities on personal calls," Richtel described Vonage as saying.

Richtel also noted that Citron told him s the pessimism of some investors only spurs Vonage on. "When people say the competition will drive us out of business," Citron tells Richtel, " it gives us more (determination) to do well.”

Vonage Stock Price Continues Upward Surge

Although we usually include this information under a separate heading called "Vonage Stock Market Report," I will start to put this in the news section of the Digest when there are major (3% or more) price swings from one day to the next.

Friday was one of those days.

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.90 a share, which was up an impressive 39 cents from Thursday's $8.51 a share as well as the highest price in almost two months. The rise was 4.58%. Total trading volume for Vonage on Friday calculated to 2,045,000 shares. That's even more impressive considering that many investors took off on Friday to make a four-day Labor Day weekend.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage-Sponsored Racers Finish 13th To End Season

Saturday was the conclusion of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car series, which throughout the series featured  Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel the Pacific Coast Motorsports #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype tomorrow.

The Vonage co-sponsored team finished 13th at the event, which was held at  Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.

Pacific Coast Motorsports ends the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series 12th overall in the Daytona Prototype Team Standings.

Big UK Retail Distribution Deal for Vonage

Electronics retailer DSG International, owner of the Dixons and PC World brands, has signed a deal with Vonage, to stock Vonage's products in its UK stores. Under the terms of the agreement, Vonage products will initially be available in the retailer's PC World stores from the beginning of October. Vonage will also gain access to DSG's ISP subsidiary Freetalk's Voip customer base as a result of the deal, which is expected. to be completed by next week.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread that has been given the title X-Pro-Vonage very buggy on Apple Intel machines, new Vonage Forum Member w1n78 describes the issue he's dealing with here.

"I wanted to try out the softphone feature with my Vonage account so I ordered (it) this morning," win78 reports about what he did Monday morning. after it was set up i downloaded the X-Pro Vonage software for OS X.. I'm using it on a MacBook Pro running 10.4.7. But then he writes that every time he'd hang up from a call, the Vonage SoftPhone application just quits, rendering a "Send to Apple" bug report box. The version of the software is 2.0 release 1106q build stamp 18414.

"I just wished they posted a sign that says not compatible with Intel Macs," he writes, adding that he's made this post because he wants to give a heads up to those people who have apple w/ Intel and wish to try out the softphone.

Joining the thread to respond to w1n78's post, Vonage Forum Member gmchenry doesn't seem too surprised.

"Software compatibility with the Mactels is the exception, not the rule," gmchenry writes about some of the new Macs with Intel chips (which they didn't have before).  "The move to universal binaries doesn't seem like it has any urgency to it."

New Vonage Forum Member sakibaba logs on from Mumbai India with a thread of interest to any Vonage user, anywhere. He's named the thread that he has started, Data Usage.

"I have the 1 GB download (256kbps) plan with unlimited night time download," writes sakibaba, whose actual first name is Saket. "Could someone tell me if this is sufficient for 2 hours daily talking not (necessarily) during free time.

"How much is per hour usage?," he asks. "If someone has any calculations kindly share them with me."

"Basically, Vonage uses about 90 kbps at full bandwidth. That's 324 Mb per hour or 40.5 MBytes per hour," explains Steve48. "So, no, I wouldn't expect to get 2 hours of call time per day and stay under 1 GB (1000 MB) per month. I'd expect to go over that for 1 hour of calling per day."

Then Steve48 explains that while sakibaba might be able to make this work at reduced bandwidth, he should remember, though, "that the Vonage adapter 'calls home' frequently to keep its link working.

"That will eat up some of your allocation," Steve 48 adds. "Also, you didn't mention upload limitations."

Finally, Steve48 advises sakibaba that if he try this, he (sakibaba) should keep a close eye on usage until he knows exactly how it's going.

Vonage Forum Reaches 33,000 Members

On Friday evening, just after dinnertime Eastern Time, we picked up our 33,000th Member here on the Vonage Forum. That new Member is majaza3. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, majaza3! We look forward to reading your posts!

And speaking of posts made by Vonage Forum Members, let's see who is our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage Forum Member of Week: Steve48

There's so many reasons to give Steve48 our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. Although I have to say I am glad so many other Vonage Forum Members took the long Labor Day holiday off, I do have to acknowledge that Steve48 stood guard here much of the Labor Day weekend, answering so many questions made in posts from other Vonage Forum Members. Also, I went back over Steve48's Member profile and I confirmed what I thought I had remembered was correct: Steve joined the Vonage Forum only a year ago this past Wednesday. And in that time, he has made nearly 2,300 posts! That's the second most of any of our more than 33,000 Members. So Steve48, not only do we make you Vonage Forum Member of the Week, but on behalf of all other Vonage Forum Members, thanks for a year of great feedback and advice! To browse through a list of some of Steve48's most recent posts, click here.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
