Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 1, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll check in on Vonage's stock price rise, what a race car team co-sponsored by Vonage has in store for this weekend, as well as the addition of a local phone number availability area in Alabama. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about some frustrating router issues. Today is Friday, time for our In The Blogs feature. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Stock Price Continues Upward Surge

Although we usually include this information under a separate heading called "Vonage Stock Market Report," I will start to put this in the news section of the Digest when there are major price swings from one day to the next.

Yesterday was one of those days.

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.51 a share, which was up an impressive 41 cents from Wednesday's $8.10 a share as well as the highest price in almost two months. The rise was 5.06%. Total trading volume for Vonage on Thursday added to came to a very busy 1,588,500 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Expands Local Phone Number Availability In Alabama

Vonage has announced that it now offers Fruithurst, Alabama's local area code. High-speed Internet subscribers working and residing in Cleburne County can now take advantage of the Vonage® broadband phone service, which offers unlimited local and long distance calling and popular features like call waiting, call forwarding and voicemail for one low, flat monthly rate. Vonage customers in Fruithurst can now keep their current numbers or choose telephone numbers within the popular (256) area code.

"With Vonage's further expansion into Alabama, individuals and small businesses can now keep their local number or choose an area code from nearly any part of the country, when they sign up for Vonage's feature-rich, flat-rate calling plans," explains Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America Inc. "In addition, we're providing consumers in Cleburne County broadband telephone service plans which include unlimited calling throughout the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, the U.K., Ireland, France, Italy and Spain."

Vonage-Sponsored Drivers In Big Race Tomorrow

Canada's David Empringham will join series regulars Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel for the Pacific Coast Motorsports #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype tomorrow. This will be at the conclusion of the  Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series event, which is the  9-hour 'Discount Tire Sunchaser' at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.

"I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to top and tail the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series season in the #89 Pontiac Riley alongside Alex and Ryan," says Empringham, who is from Toronto. "The team's firmly on a roll with their results from the previous two races so hopefully I can do my bit to keep the momentum going and go out on a high behind the wheel of a competitive entry. Based on last month's test at the track there's no reason why we can't be up there this weekend."

"Miller Motorsports Park is a great track and we had fun testing there for a couple of days in July. I'm really looking forward to heading back there for this weekend's season finale and I'm equally happy to have Dave Empringham share the car with us," adds Ryan. He adds that last "Saturday's result at Infineon was well deserved; we had a quick car so hopefully we'll carry that pace straight into Miller Motorsports Park. The long track layout suits the Daytona Prototypes so it should be a fun nine hours!"

"It's great to be going somewhere that's new to everyone," adds Alex. "Miller's a stunning race track and I'm really keen to get out there and see what we can do. I think we've got one of the strongest line-up's with the addition of Dave's speed and experience, that, combined with our recent results, should make for a very competitive package!"

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member davecm has not just been experiencing router issues. He has been dealing with "agonizing" router issues. So I guess that is why he has decided to start a new Vonage Forum thread that he has named, Agonizing router issue - I think - RT31P2 outages.

"For about 6 months, it seems our phone and Internet goes down," davecm writes. He says he has spoken to his Internet service provider Cablevision and they keep saying the signal is strong.

"They tell me to unplug my cable modem and phone router and wait a few minutes and replug. Everything works. A few hours later or the next day the same problem," he writes.

"Now that I've moved, it seems to happen 3 or 4 times per day," davecm complains, adding that he has Linksys RT31P2.

Vonage Forum Member Steve48 jumps in.

"If you set the RT31P2 aside for a day or so and plug your computer directly in to the modem," Steve48 asks davecm, "does it lose Internet connectivity several times a day?"

"It does seem to work fine when plugged in directly from cable modem to computer," answers davecm. "When the router is also set up, the phone light on the front of the router box will go off even when the internet. is still working. All the lights on my cable modem are on."

Feeling he has enough to go on now, Steve48 offers some suggestions.

"That seems to exonerate your ISP," concludes Steve48. "I would call Vonage (use 888 250 1799), ask for tier 2 support, and describe this problem to them, emphasizing that you do not lose Internet service unless the RT31P2 is involved."

Then Steve48 says to davecm that if that doesn't get effective action, he should report the problem to Vonage via Email using this forum's contact page (menu top left, Vonage Information/Contact Support). "We're told that this gets more attention than the standard support," Steve48 notes.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog, writes about his thoughts about how the Vonage IPO has affected the Internet telephony industry.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG didn't write about Vonage this week, but he does have an interesting article about how Voip services can help budget-conscious college students save money on long distance calls. Of course, that's part of Vonage's appeal.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about a second key competitor of Vonage offering a new subscription billing option.

On David Isenberg's, he didn't blog this week (he's been building and moving into a new home, but a few weeks ago he wrote a powerful post that seems to acknowledge that net neutrality (which Vonage wants by the way) is not going to pass in this Congressional session or be enforced by the FCC. He then addressed to the big telcos that since you argue that net neutrality rules are unnecessary, now is your chance to prove this is true by playing fair.

Jeff Pulver of is starting to write posts about the Fall VON show, which will be in Boston starting a week from Monday.. Incidentally, a September 12 keynote address will be given by Jeff Citron, Chairman and Chief Strategist of Vonage. His keynote will be: Industry Perspective: Mobility in a Converging World. I plan to drive up and attend. Probably I will get to see many of the same bloggers I am writing about now.

Preston Gralla of Networking Pipeline doesn't seem to be big on the security of Asterisk, open-source Voip software that some people believe is a viable alternative to paid Voip services such as Vonage.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog writes about competition between Vonage competitors Verizon and Cablevision. A couple of weeks ago he speculated about Vonage chairman Jeffrey Citron's reasons for his recent Vonage stock transactions.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog wrote about Vonage and D-Link announcing the availability of the VWR, a Wireless-B/G Broadband Router with 2 phone ports bundled with Vonage's service.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) didn't write about Vonage this week, but a few weeks ago he linked to an article in the New York Times about large carriers such as Verizon are losing local customers to cable rivals and Voip service providers such as Vonage.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog writes about the rapid increase in Vonage's stock price, and what that might mean. He's one of the very few Voip bloggers who has caught on to this.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog has a link to a podcast he did last week from the Progress & Freedom Foundation's annual summit in Aspen, Colorado. Paul, I am jealous!!

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog wrote about some problems a softphone competitor of Vonage (not Skype) has been having with their users dialing toll-free"800" numbers.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP just came back from the Voip Developer Conference, and he makes several posts about what he saw there.

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy writes that advocates for net neutrality (which Vonage backs) are firing up their action efforts once again.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new Associated Content blog I came upon by Sean Watts,  he goes through a detailed comparison of Voip services from Vonage and Verizon- with Vonage coming out the clear winner. I enjoyed reading the piece, which has lots of details but is easy to understand. Here's the link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Since Monday marks the Labor Day holiday in the U.S., we'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
