Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 31, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 31, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Wow the last day in August. Did summer go by that quickly?

I'll tell you how I spent a good bit of my summer. After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all Vonage.com, Vonage.ca and Vonage.uk users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

In the news, we'll read a review of the Vonage V-Phone. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about prioritizing voice over data traffic over a broadband connection that carries Vonage traffic. And there is another thread about using Vonage service with Shoretel IP PBXs.  We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

British Reviewer Likes The Vonage V-Phone

British online magazine Stuff's out with a review of the Vonage V-Phone. just discovered Vonage's V-Phone will be arriving in UK shops within weeks.

The reviewer is Adam Vaughan.

"he orange USB stick simply plugs in to any Windows PC, loads chat software without installation and then lets you call from anywhere in the world paying UK rates using a UK landline number," Vaughan writes. "The phone comes bundled with a bog-standard wired headset plus 250MB of free storage."

Don't ask me what "bog-standard" means.

But one of the important points Vaughan makes is that the call quality is better over the V-Phone than on Skype.

We've been giving the V-Phone a spin and it fulfils the promise, even besting Skype by a fraction on call quality: the line had less crackle.

"In Vonage's favour, its phone does arrive bundled with a UK number for free," On Skype you need to cough up £7 (that's about $13.30 U.S.-Dan) every 3 months for that precious 020 number.

"At the least, Vonage's dongle is a good intro to Vonage for newbies: the broadband telco's clearly hoping you'll upgrade to more serious kit such as its Wi-Fi phone and routers for old skool DECT phones," Vaughan adds. We wish it well, but it feels like Zen versus iPod up-hill battle all over again - this time with an internet telephony twist.

Vonage UK To Work With Freetalk

Vonage UK today announced that it has entered into an agreement with DSG international plc, Europe’s leading specialist electrical retailer, under which Vonage Voip telephony products will be stocked in DSG stores and Vonage will acquire Freetalk’s Voip customer base.

Under the agreement Freetalk customers will be able to transfer their service and phone number to Vonage and benefit from Vonage’s innovative features and services and competitive rates. In addition, the Vonage service will be made available in DSG stores from 1 October 2006 with an initial roll out in PC World stores.

“Vonage is pleased to announce this important extension to our commercial relationship with DSG international,” said Kerry Ritz, managing director of Vonage UK. “We are excited to welcome Freetalk customers and to be given the opportunity to provide our service to a greater number of UK households and small businesses. This agreement further demonstrates the strength of the Vonage proposition and brand and we look forward to continuing to offer and develop innovative products at a cost effective price.”

Kerry Ritz added: “We are thrilled to have the Vonage service available at the UK’S largest electrical retailer. This is another significant step forward in bringing our attractive offering to the mass market.”

Aside from benefiting from Vonage’s innovative features, including 999 call functionality and free phone 24 hour customer support, Freetalk customers will benefit from keeping their existing telephone numbers. The transition is planned to be completed by 12th September 2006.

“We are pleased to be working closely with Vonage on the development of our retail proposition in Voip telephony,” said Jonathan Matchett, Head of Business Development for Voip telephony at DSG International. “We are impressed with Vonage’s technology and award winning service, which will ensure all Freetalk customers are given excellent levels of service and customer care.”

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum Member with the user name AxeTheDead has started a new thread that he has entitled, higher priority for Voice then Data. help.

AxeTheDead (yea, that's what he calls himself) starts out his post by writing that he is looking for a way to give VOIP higher priority then his Data transfers.

He writes that he keep having to refresh his dashboard to see if he is getting phone calls. He's using  the Motorola VT2442.

"I just want a way for the router to curb or even kill (if it has to) my file transfers to i may receive phone calls," AxeTheDead writes to end his post.

After an exchange of posts with AxeTheDead that clarified the issue, Vonage Forum Member gmcherny made another post with his thoughts.

"I was just reading the manual for the 2442. Neither the 'Quick Start' nor the manual were very clear," writes gmcherny.  "I believe they are inferring that the QOS settings will allow the Ethernet ports to run at a higher priority than the internal VT components. Hopefully, the internal VT components would run at higher priority by default."

Then gmcherny adds that if isn't the case, you can setup QOS rules for each of the 4 Ethernet ports and set them to "Low" (pages 24 & 25 of the user manual). And Vonage uses UDP protocol.

A new Vonage Forum thread named Connect with Shoretel finds new Vonage Forum Member jray asking about using Vonage's phone service with Shoretel IP PBX products.

"My company has asked me to look into hosting our own Voip System. I have been researching Shoretel, and was told that Vonage phones integrate with the ShoreTel system," he writes. "Have any of you tried this, and if so, how well does it work?

"I am looking to use Vonage to cut down on long distance charges," jray writes.

Vonage Forum Member CCNADog has an answer.

"You should be able to connect a Vonage line to your Shoretel system. You will need to configure your PBX trunk port as loop-start and the polarity doesn't matter," he writes. "The other option from the phone company is ground-start (not available from Vonage) which is a special trunk that PBX systems like better I believe due to better disconnect supervision."

Use Vonage to cut down on long-distance charges? Well, lots of people use Vonage for that reason, jray.

Check Out Our Vonage UK Forum

Since both of our news items today have to do with the UK, that gives me the idea to tell you about the Vonage UK Forum.

The Vonage UK Forum contains a list of threads about Vonage service and equipment in the U.K. Yet although this section is of primary interest to Vonage's U.K. customers, a good percentage of the threads listed and linked here concern equipment, set-up, equipment and some other topics of interest to the broader Vonage community.

Go ahead and check it out. You can go to the Vonage UK Forum directly from this link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday  morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. This edition, which will cover through Monday (which is the Labor Day holiday in the U.S.) will contain our popular In The Blogs feature!!
