Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 30, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on a major sporting event that starts tonight, and Vonage's role in it. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about a VTech static IP address, and another about using Vonage with DirecTV to call in and get updated program listings. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Presents WNBA Finals Starting Tonight

Vonage and the WNBA announced that Vonage will be presenting partner of the 2006 WNBA Finals.

As part of the agreement Vonage also will be the official presenting partner of the WNBA Finals Most Valuable Player award.

The deal follows closely on the heels of one that the WNBA and Vonage signed earlier this year through which the broadband telephone services company became the first-ever presenting partner of the WNBA All-Star Game.

The 2006 WNBA Finals Presented by Vonage, will match the league’s Eastern Conference champion Detroit Shock against the winner of the Western Conference which is the Sacramento Monarchs, in a best-of-five-game series slated to start this evening. Each Finals game will be televised live on ESPN2 and broadcast in a record 198 countries.

“Just as Vonage takes great pride in giving its customers the best value possible, the WNBA Finals provide fans with a championship series that delivers great basketball and quality entertainment,” said WNBA President Donna Orender.

“This is another slam-dunk for Vonage! We are happy to continue our sponsorship with the WNBA by serving as the presenting partner of the WNBA’s Finals and MVP award. We see this as an exciting opportunity to reach women and families who watch the longest running and most successful women’s professional sports league,” stated Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America Inc. “Vonage is excited about the opportunity to raise awareness around the globe about its flat-rate, feature-rich broadband phone plans with this pioneering and inspirational sports league.”

Although terms of the relationship were not announced, Vonage will receive commercial units within WNBA Playoff games promoting the Finals as well as within in each Finals telecast. While the Vonage logo will appear in the opening and closing billboard of each Finals telecast, Vonage also will have a significant in-arena presence during the Finals where the company’s logo will appear on the court, on pole pads and on courtside rotational signage

And I also noticed that Vonage's logo is prominent on the WNBA's Web site

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member das6748 wanted the scoop on VTech IP8100 Static IP Address, he decided to start a thread with that name.

"Quick question, when documentation tells you to give the VTech IP8100 (or any Vonage device) a static IP address when it is behind a router, do they mean setting that up in the adapter settings or is giving it a static DHCP IP address in the router adequate?," das6748 asks. "I have done the latter but the more I read the more I wonder if I have this wrong."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc has the scoop.

"The router settings should be fine," he posts. "The reason they (VTech) want you to do that is just so you can forward the ports needed for Vonage to that IP and not have to worry about it changing if you plug a new device in."

Some Vonage customers are also DirecTV users, and use their Vonage line to call into DirecTV to get program listing updates. But Vonage Forum Member dford13 has been having some difficulties with that setup. That's why he went ahead and opened a new thread here that he called No Dial Tone on DirecTV Receiver.

"Just got hooked up with Vonage. My phones work fine. My two DirecTV receivers cannot detect a dial tone. One receiver is connected directly to Line2 port of the Vonage D-Link VWR device," he writes.

"The other receiver is using a Wireless phone jack extension (through the electrical outlet)," dford13 adds.

"Anyone run into this before? Is there a setting on the receiver that needs to be changed," he asks.

As is often the case, Steve48 is the first one to respond.

"Are you paying for two phone lines? If not, phone port 2 isn't active. You'd have to connect your receiver to port 1 using a splitter," Steve48 tells dford13.

"If you are paying for 2 lines, does a regular phone get dial tone when it's plugged into port 2?," he then asks.

Less than an hour after Steve48 made that post, dford13 responded to Steve48's suggestions and questions by making a follow-up post.

"I didn't realize that Phone2 was for a separate line," dford13 writes. "I thought it was just an extra jack for my one line. When I connect my DirecTV receiver directly to the Phone1 line, it was able to dial out but could not connect with DirecTV so I think something is wrong on their end.

"I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for your help Steve!," dford13 adds.

Then, early this morning, another post was added to this thread and it was added by Vonage Forum Member rgnok.

"Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to have your calls fail with DirecTV," rgnok writes. "But -- for the record, I have 2 DirecTV receivers - an R10 DirecTivo and an older model that escapes me at the moment, and, with a bit of effort, I'm able to get both to dial.

"One thing to note -- the calls certainly DO NOT succeed every time -- failures are common, but, ultimately, mine do work, rgnok adds.

Check Out Our Fax, TiVo, Alarms Forum

In Vonage Forum Member rgnok's post I just quoted from, he also advised thread-starter dford13 to search for solutions to his tech issue by going to our Fax, TiVo and Alarms Forum.

Do you use your Vonage connection to send or receive faxes, call the TiVo service for updates, or perhaps most important of all, automatically call your home security service?

Well, if you have questions on issues relating to these needs, you should go to our Fax, TiVo and Alarms Forum. Here's where you can research your issue, or even make a post with your question or questions. This growing section of the Vonage Forum's picked up their 3,200th post just a few days ago. Here's the link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday  morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
