Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 28, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 28, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll visit a red-hot issue: the apparent block against Vonage service in Dubai. We'll also find out how a couple of race car drivers co-sponsored by Vonage did this weekend. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads from a reader wanting to purchase a new D-Link VWR router for his Vonage service, and what to do about a damaged adapter box for an ATA (Analog Terminal Adapter) used with the Vonage service. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price. Today is Monday, when we meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Dubai Vonage-Blocking Complaints Persist

Vonage users in the oil kingdom of Dubai have been complaining there is a block against Vonage service. In fact, the complaints have become so vocal that a Vonage Forum thread on the subject entitled Vonage not active in Dubai, U.A.E. Probable ISP block has accumulated more than 325 threads and 10,000 page views.

The issue is as hot and contentious as two months ago to this very day when the thread was opened by Vonage Forum Member scribblex, who first reported his issue by writing:

"I live in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where the ISP Etisalat is playing monopoly. I have been using the device for almost a month now, and it has been working perfectly fine. Although three days ago, the green light stopped and the yellow stand by light has been constantly on. I tried doing the whole unplugging and plugging again process with the routers but nothing seems to work. Other people I know of who also use the Voip services seemed to have a block in services. Is there any way I can start using my service again? Or is there a way to bypass this block?"

What follows next are 325 posts full of questions, frustrations, suggestions, and some strong opinions. This is an important issue that rather than going away, is of continued and increasing importance. I suggest you go to the thread, read it and if you have something to offer-even your sympathies-then go ahead and post.

Vonage Drivers Finish Fifth

Pacific Coast Motorsports enjoyed a top-five 'home' finish in yesterday's 'Sonoma 250' at the Infineon Raceway, California as Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel raced the #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype to a fifth place finish in Round 13 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.

"I thought it was a good race!," Ryan said. "There weren't any crazy incidents and we managed to stay out of trouble to run right at the front with the leaders. It's a fun track to race on and we were a lot faster this year in the Daytona Prototypes than we were last year in the Corvette.

"Overall we're happy with the result and look forward to a suitably strong showing to wrap the season at Miller Motorsports Park," Ryan added, referring to next weekend's Discount Tire Sunchaster in Tooele, Utah.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member plank expresses his frustration in a new Vonage Forum thread he's begun and named, Why will Vonage not let me buy a D-Link VWR?

"Why will Vonage not let me buy a new D-Link VWR?," writes plank, starting off the text of his post with the title he gave his thread.

"I have talked to both sales and tech support. You can only get one by signing up for new service," he writes. "They (Vonage sales and tech support) tell me that I must buy one at Best Buy or Circuit City. So far, it is only available on Vonage's website.

"I am tired of my PAP2 and want the latest, greatest adapter," adds plank. "I am willing to give them full price, but Vonage refuses to sell me one!"

Vonage Forum Member Steve48 joins the thread with an interesting suggestion.

"Drop an Email to them using the forum Vonage contact page (top left menu, Vonage Information/contact support)," writes Steve48 about this feature on the Vonage site. "We're told that gets special attention at Vonage."

As we all know, technology equipment can be subject to damage. For those of us who are Vonage users, that can be frustrating when it happens. Just ask Vonage Forum Member frankv, who has started a thread called Damaged adapter box?

"Have been using Vonage for some time - in the event my adapter box gets damaged, can I purchase a replacement and still KEEP the SAME TEL number as I have now?," he asks. "I thought that the tel number was PERMANENTLY installed on the adapter, and therefore not transferable to another adapter. Correct?"

Vonage Forum Member arcking has the answer: "You can replace the adapter and keep the same account/number. http://vonage.com/retail_subscribe/."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
