Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 25 - 27, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 25, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll check in on what a race car team co-sponsored by Vonage has in store for this weekend.. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about how a router used with the Vonage service might be causing some connection issues for a Vonage Forum Member. Today is Friday, time for our In The Blogs feature. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage-Sponsored Drivers In Big Race Tomorrow

California's Infineon Raceway plays host to the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series this Saturday, 26th August, with Pacific Coast Motorsports running its #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype into a hoped-for the top-ten placement in the series Team Standings as the season draws to a close.

"I'm hoping to steer clear of a penalty that's for sure!," says Ryan Dalziel, one of the two drivers on the Vonage co-sponsored team. "We raced here last year so we know what to expect from the circuit layout and the weather. For sure we expect it to be hot and the configuration isn't too dissimilar from Watkins Glen where we last raced and were competitive. I'm looking forward to a strong showing and cracking the top ten in the points chase."

"I think we've got to look at qualifying as an area of improvement as our race pace has been up there with the best of them! If we can tweak our performance in qualifying and help ourselves there then I think we'll be in even better shape for the races," adds co-driver Alex Figge. "We were racing at the front at Watkins so we'll want to continue that at Infineon this weekend and make sure we stay out of trouble!"

On The Vonage Voip Forum

It seems that when Vonage Forum Member agill11 uses Vonage, his Internet connection is not too "agile." So I guess that is why he decided to start a Vonage Forum thread that he calls, Internet connection drops after 20 mins. use.

"I am constantly having to unplug my Linksys WRTP54G router and reboot it every 20 minutes or so when it loses the Internet connection. This just started a couple of days ago and I've had my Vonage service for months," agill11 writes. "I'm wondering if it could be a defective router or is something else the cause.

Then agill11 tells us the router is in a cool area so he doesn't believe it's overheating.

"I replaced the coax cable with a new one but that hasn't helped," he asks." Does anyone have any other ideas?"

Well, agill11, there's never a shortage of ideas here on the Vonage Forum. You heard back from two fellow Vonage Forum Members who made follow-up posts to yours.

"Call your ISP and ask them to check the Transmit and Receive Channel Power of your modem," stan2841 advises. "Also check the Linksys website to see if there are any firmware updates for your router."

Next up is Darrell_G, whose response, incidentally, is his 100th post on the Vonage Forum.

"First, try disconnecting the WRTP54G and connect your DSL or cable modem directly to your computer to see if it loses the internet connection," Darrell_G suggests. "If the connection is lost, your problem is with either the modem or your ISP and not the router."

Then Darrell_G adds: "FYI, all firmware updates for the WRTP54G will come from Vonage automatically NOT Linksys."

Vonage Stock Market Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.09 a share, a rise of 29 cents (+4.26%) from Wednesday's closing price of $6.80 a share and up from a session low of $6.80 at the start of the trading day.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Thursday was computed at 1,308,700 shares.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog, writes about a yearly pricing plan just announced by one of Vonage's direct competitors.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG didn't write about Vonage this week, but in a post he made earlier this month he seemed to be wondering why the statistical trends in Vonage's stock price do not match the statistical trends in Vonage's quarterly financial report, which was released earlier this month.. He speculates on what that might mean.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about a new line of VoIP-compatible hardware products made by Logitech. They make headsets that lots of Vonage Softphone subscribers use.

On David Isenberg's isen.blog, he didn't blog this week (he's been building and moving into a new home, but a few weeks ago he wrote a powerful post that seems to acknowledge that net neutrality (which Vonage wants by the way) is not going to pass in this Congressional session or be enforced by the FCC. He then addressed to the big telcos that since you argue that net neutrality rules are unnecessary, now is your chance to prove this is true by playing fair.

Jeff Pulver of Pulver.com is starting to write posts about the Fall VON show, which will be in Boston next month. Incidentally, a September 12 keynote address will be given by Jeff Citron, Chairman and Chief Strategist of Vonage. His keynote will be: Industry Perspective: Mobility in a Converging World.

Preston Gralla of Networking Pipeline doesn't seem to be big on the security of Asterisk, open-source Voip software that some people believe is a viable alternative to paid Voip services such as Vonage.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog writes about competition between Vonage competitors Verizon and Cablevision. Last week he speculated about Vonage chairman Jeffrey Citron's reasons for his recent Vonage stock transactions.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog writes about earlier this week when Vonage and D-Link announced the availability of the VWR, a Wireless-B/G Broadband Router with 2 phone ports bundled with Vonage's service.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) didn't write about Vonage this week, but a couple of weeks ago he linked to an article in the New York Times about large carriers such as Verizon are losing local customers to cable rivals and Voip service providers such as Vonage.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog writes about triple-play Voip services offered by DSL and phone providers, and how that model competes against Vonage. Earlier this month Russ revealed research that said Vonage hasn't been spending as much money on Internet advertising as it has before, and then Russ speculated why that might be the case.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog has a link to a podcast he did earlier this week from the Progress & Freedom Foundation's annual summit in Aspen, Colorado. Paul, I am jealous!!

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog wrote about some problems a softphone competitor of Vonage (not Skype) has been having with their users dialing toll-free"800" numbers.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP just came back from the Voip Developer Conference, and he makes several posts about what he saw there.

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy made the point that some net neutrality opponents seem to be misleading folks by starting or participating in organizations with names that sound very much pro-consumer- and pro net neutrality by implication.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new Windows Live Spaces blog I came on called My Kutti Diary,  blogger Shubha writes that thanks to Vonage and its inexpensive calling to India, she's now a good cook. "The new LOVE means the love i developed for COOKING....n trust me its only after marriage that i entered the kitchen at all... n learnt a lot over phone...thanks to vonage....thats to my mother -in-law n mom of course...its they who tot me everything rite from switching on the stove to putting it off....at least mom did that coz she knows how responsible her daughter is...its for one month from when i came from India i was getting cooking lessons over the phone...n now....from the encouragement i got from my hubby n a few of his friends...i can cook pretty well."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
