Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 24, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 24, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read a review in which the writer suggests the Vonage V-Phone would be a great back-to-school present. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about pairing up a router to work with a PBX, and a thread about router QoS (Quality of Service) issues. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Reviewer Suggests Vonage V-Phone as Back-To-School Present

Vanessa Ho of PCWorld.ca suggests the Vonage V-Phone as a back-to-school gift.

"The company mostly known for its Voip service is also offering students a USB flash drive that not only lets students store data on it but also comes with Vonage phone service," she writes. With this device, called a V-Phone, students can call home for cheap and from anywhere without having to install the software on that computer. This small and portable flash drive plugs into the USB port of any PC that has a high-speed internet connection, which then lets students make phone calls."

Ho adds that as Vonage claims, "the V-Phone lets students take their phone service (and phone number, which students can keep for the school year) with them whenever they go. It also comes with an earphone and a microphone so students can listen and speak to people."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Vonage and PBX's, new Vonage Forum Member jsfrederick explains what he would like to do.

"I'm building a new home," jsfrederick writes. "I'm planning on getting a Panasonic Home PBX. I'd like to use my Linksys RT31P2 with it. Has anyone done this?"

Then jsfrederick hears back from two respondents.

"The biggest potential problem is echo," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member Mustardman. "Phone systems usually have good echo cancellation but some may have problems dealing with the delay added by Voip like Vonage."

Mustardman then adds that Voip tends to have larger delays than normal phone networks.

"If you get echo the phone system might not be able to cancel it because of the delay+echo," he writes. "Depends a lot on the quality of the echo canceller. What is the model of the phone system. Chances are you won't have any problems but no guarantees."

Next, xcrunxc joins the discussion.

"Another thing to keep in mind is Vonage will not support or help you with any sort of PBX system," explains xcrunxc. 'If you are experiencing an issue, they will have you plug a phone directly into the back of your Vonage device and if that works then they are done helping you."

After that, xcrunxc tells jsfrederick that if he feels comfortable with working with and troubleshooting a PBX system, then this procedure shouldn't be a problem.

Vonage Forum Member psaletan describes the issues he's had by starting a thread that he's called, Airlink101 AR420w Router QoS.

"I just purchased an Airlink101 router model # AR420w because of the QoS feature. However, I'm unable to get it to save any of the QoS settings," writes psaletan.

He then asks if any other Vonage Forum Member can confirm that QoS does work with this router and what happens when you click the "Apply" button on that configuration screen (should it restart)?

"Also, what revision number is your router (and how do I tell)?," psaletan asks. "I exchanged e-mails with their support department and they suggest I may have a defective router. But it works perfectly in all other respects."

It is at this point that the thread is joined by fellow Vonage Forum Member Sivenand, who on his very first post here, goes into detail.

Sivenand starts out his post by noting his setup: DataOne DSL+Airlink101+Gransteam HT486.

I've connected the DSL output to the wireless router's internet port and from the LAN port1 to computer and LAN 2 to ATA..but I was not able to connect to the  Internet," he writes. "But when I connect the DSL output to Routers LAN port I was to connect to the Internet," he informs us.

But guess what. Before long psaletan comes back to the thread he started with an update.

"It appears I had a defective router," psaletan informs us. "I returned it to the store for another one, and the QoS settings now save correctly."

To close out his post, psaletan also writes that, apparently, "these routers won't serve as gateways to the internet for wired connections until you fill in the wireless settings."

Vonage Stock Market Report

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday  morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
