Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 22, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 22, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's E911 progress, as well as about two corporate moves made by Vonage.  We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about what sounds like a modem issue, as well as another thread about a router lockup. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage's E911 Now Passes 85% Subscriber Mark

On yesterday, Vonage announced that over 85% of its U.S. subscriber lines are now equipped with Enhanced 911 (E911) service -- a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number. Over the past three months, Vonage has equipped more than 500 locally-run emergency call centers across the U.S. with E911 -- bringing the total number of calling centers with emergency 911 service to over 5400.

"Today over 85 percent of our U.S. subscriber lines have full E911 capability, which is a tremendous step for Vonage," said Jeffrey A. Citron, Vonage's chairman and chief strategist. "Vonage will continue to work with the FCC, regulators, Congress and public safety until PSAPs across the nation are equipped with E911."

Vonage Makes Stock Move, Announces Resignation From Board

On Monday  filed a "shelf" registration statement on Form S-1 pursuant to the registration rights agreement entered into in connection with its convertible bond offering. This agreement was originally described in Vonage's initial public offering final prospectus on page 128.

According to the terms of the registration rights agreement, note holders may convert their bonds into shares of the Company's common stock at a conversion price of $14.22. The note holders are subject to a lockup period that expires on or about November 19, 2006.

Vonage  also announced that Hugh Panero, Chief Executive Officer of XM Satellite Radio has resigned from the Vonage Board, effective August 18, 2006, citing the demands of his role at XM for his decision. "Hugh will be missed on the Board, we wish him well and we thank him for his contributions," said Jeffrey Citron, Chairman and Chief Strategist at Vonage. At this time, the Vonage Board has no plans to fill Mr. Panero's Board seat.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member jhortman has started a thread that he's called, Loss of DNS services, but phone still works.

"Starting on August 3 (which, oddly enough, was 2 years to the day from the time I first got Vonage service), the DNS function of my Motorola VT1005RB Vonage modem would just randomly stop, and not come back," he writes. "When this happens, I can't connect to anything other than IP addresses from inside my network, and from outside, I can't connect to anything at all, though I can ping my own IP address.

Then jhortman adds that sometimes he can resolve the problem by restoring factory defaults on the modem, "but sometimes not (such as now). When that happens, I have to take the Vonage modem out, and my network works as normal again.

"It's also interesting to note that when this happens, I can reach the Vonage router at, but I can't reach the DSL Modem's admin page at, like I normally can when it's running fine," jhortman adds. "I can still reach IP addresses directly (w/o using a DNS name) on the Internet, though."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member NateHoy reads jhortman's post and offers a response.

"I suspect that your Vonage device is employing a DNS Proxy Server. The WRTP54G and RTP300 have them, and have a lot of problems with them," Nate writes, then suggesting that jhortman check out the article at

"The article above covers this for the WRTP54G and RTP300. However, I don't know anything about the Motorola adapter you have," NateHoy adds. "If there is an option to disable its DNS proxy and have your PCs all go direct to the Internet to do DNS lookups, I'd do that.

"Your VT1005RB may have this option," adds Nate. If it does, could you contact me (either here via IM or via the feedback email address listed in my "about" page of my articles) and get me a screenshot of your setup page so I can add it to my article?"

Vonage Dlink VTA Keeps locking up router is an interesting new thread that has been started by new Vonage Forum Member rhoyle.

"I've had Vonage since October 05 and over the past month I keep losing phone service and internet service (RR) every hour or so. I first thought it was a modem and time warner came out and replaced it, then thought it was the phone adapter so I sent in my PAP2 and Vonage sent me the D-Link," rhoyle tells us.

"Then a tech support said it had to be my router, so I went and bought a new router (D-link DIR-625)....All the time same problem," rhoyle adds. "If I unplug the phone adapter I get my internet back and if I recycle everything (I.e., modem, router and adapter I get phone back .. but an hour or so later it does it again. The firewall is not on the router and the ports are forwarded so I have no other earthly idea what it could be."

Well, rhoyle may not have an idea, but fellow Vonage Forum Member stan2841 does.

"Sorry to hear about all the bad luck you are having with this," stan2841 writes in his reply post to rhoyle. "I assume that since you are using port forwarding, your network is setup to use static IP's. Just in case you didn't know, D-Link has released a new firmware revision for your router and can be found here:

"It was released in June 2006. You may want to give it a try to see if it helps, if you haven't already done so," stan2841 suggests.

Vonage Stock Market Report

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.75 a share, a rise of 25 cents (+3.85%) from Friday's closing price of  $6.50 a share, and up from a session low of $6.38 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Monday was calculated at 649,000 shares.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
