Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 21, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on a prestigious marketing award won by a direct marketing executive who has Vonage as one of her key clients. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread on router issues, and another Vonage Forum thread from a ember looking for advice on a DSL setup to work with Vonage. Today is Monday, time to meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Marketer Wins Key Award

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) List & Database Council has presented its 2006 honors at DMA List Vision 2006, honoring a list industry veteran as well as three newer members of the list community.

The Council presented its List Leader of the Year to Stefanie Pont, managing partner of Pont Media Direct.

With more than 20 years of direct marketing, list brokerage, and management experience, Pont launched Pont Media Direct in February of 2004, specializing in strategic media planning, list brokerage, campaign management and analysis. Vonage is listed as one of her key customers,

The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the list and database industry, was presented at the List Leader of the Year Awards dinner, which was held Tuesday night at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread entitled How to use a WRTP54G and RT31P2 together, new Vonage Forum Member talon4x4 describes his setup and then gets to the specifics of his question.

"I have the RT31P2 but the voice stopped working, internet traffic still works fine. So I purchased the WRTP54G. The wireless router (is faulty at) at handling the Voip while download or playing games, I can barely make or receive any phone calls," writes talon4x4.

Then talon4x4 asks if it is possible to use the RT31P2 as the device for internet traffic and the WRTP54G for the phone.

"Will the QoS for Voip on the RT31P2 be able to manage the Voip traffic if the phone is hooked up to the WRTP54G?," he asks.

Talon4x4 adds that he has found some documentation that he believes showed how to do this but he is unsure. The documentation incidentally, is at

"The problem I'm running into is setting a local ip on the WRTP54G. I've tried changing it to, but when I save the changes the router keeps displaying a page cannot be found error, talon4x4 explains. "I can change every other setting and save it with no problem. Then I cannot get back into the router unless I reset it (I tried accessing the router at and

I'm just learning how this networking stuff works, so please bear with me."

Vonage Forum Member Steve48 reads talon4x4's post and then follows up with some advice.

"Your main problem seems to be that the WRTP54G is not adequate to the routing task when you're gaming," Steve48 writes. "The fact that Vonage routers are deficient in this respect is well known, and the RT31P2 is no better."

Steve48 then suggests that talon4x4 go with a better router "as your main router, trash the RT31P2, and use the WRTP54G as a Vonage adapter only. Do a search on the forum and you'll find that this has been discussed before."

New Vonage Forum Member N_Jay has decided to start a new Vonage Forum thread which he has named, best setup for DSL.

"What is the best setup for using Vonage on a DSL line,?" N-Jay asks, posting that he has a DI-614+ router and PAP2 and has to be careful files done go up or down while on a call.

Next, N-Jay asks three questions, all of which are answered inline by fellow Vonage Forum Member arcking.

Here's how that exchange went:

N_Jay wrote: I was told the Vonage enabled router would fix this, but have also heard that it does not.

Arcking replied: It should, but some of the routers have problems doing that. I'd go with you' other idea.

N_Jay wrote: What about a router with QOS and a PAP2?

Arcking replied: That should work very well. I'd recommend a Linksys WRT54GL or a Buffalo WHR-G54S. Take a look at NateHoy's guides to get an idea of what you'd need to do:

N_Jay wrote: What should the settings be if that does work.

Arcking wrote: Refer to NateHoy's guides. You can prioritize the data by physical port, MAC, TCP/UPD port, or IP.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner.
