Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 17, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll find out what Vonage thinks may be holding it back from quickly growing past the current 85 percent of its subscribers able to get E911. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads about phone adapters, and another one about a phone number mix-up. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Complains AT&T Is Holding Up E911

Vonage has implemented enhanced 911 emergency dialing service on nearly 85 percent of its customers' lines, but Vonage says it continues to have problems in areas served by AT&T Inc.

Vonage's E911 adoption is up from 26 percent at the end of November 2005, when a U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deadline passed for Voip providers to offer E911 to their customers. Vonage says it is working hard to get the remaining 15-plus percent of its customers access to E911, said Steve Seitz, the company's vice president of 911 regulatory affairs.

Slow E911 implementation in areas served by AT&T local phone service -- large parts of the U.S. Midwest and Southwest -- is largely keeping Vonage from delivering E911 to about 95 percent of its customers, a Vonage spokesperson tells the IDG News service.  In AT&T territory, about 63 percent of Vonage customers have access to E911, while 90-plus percent of Vonage customers in territories served by Verizon Communications Inc. and Qwest Communications International Inc. have E911, the spokesman said.

"We think it's going to be an uphill battle to get that [AT&T] percentage on par with the other carriers," the spokesman added.

A "hodgepodge" of issues remain in AT&T territory, Seitz said. "Our goal is not to get into a tussle with AT&T," the spokesperson explained." Our goal is for every Vonage customer to have E911."

In a July 28 filing with the FCC, Vonage accused AT&T of not giving dispatch centers -- known as public safety answering points or PSAPs -- the connections needed to implement E911 for Vonage. AT&T has been slow in some states to allow PSAPs access to its database linking phone numbers to locations, and it has delayed PSAP access to some telephone network routers, Vonage said in the filing.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member jeff28 has started a thread that he has named 2 Phone Adapters.

"I am thinking about signing up for Vonage, one question I have is can I have 2 phone adapters for one phone number and just plug and unplug when I need to use?," jeff28 writes. Example: Instead of taking my phone adapter with me daily to my office, I was wondering if I could keep a phone adapter at each location and just turn them on or off.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member cargojack has read jeff28's question and has a suggestion.

"If I understand what you want to do, you want to have the same number accessible from both your home and office, and you want to do it by just plugging in two different adapter boxes assigned to the same number," cargojack writes.

"You cannot really do that, BUT! you can get two adapters, and set up Simulring so that the numbers assigned to both adapters ring when either is called," he suggests in response to cargojack's original question. "You can also use Simulring so that your cell phone rings also, when your office number is called. I have my office number set up that way through Vonage."

Then cargojack suggests that jeff28 could also get the WiFi phone and carry that back and forth from his office, and just use a Wifi set up in both his home and office.

On a new Vonage Forum thread called My virtual number - Someone else's land line?, thread-starter and Vonage Forum Member travmo writes, that he is waiting on his current telephone number to port over to Vonage. "In the meantime, I am receiving voicemails from an employment staffing company for another person that apparently has this number listed, or did have it listed at one time," travmo explains.

"I called her back to let her know that she had the wrong person/# but she gave me my virtual phone number as the one listed for the person she was trying to reach," adds travmo. "The Company was located in Illinois, I am in Ky. I also received a call from a cell phone in Illinois. Anyone have any idea what's going on?"

Vonage Forum Member taylor2767 describes a similar experience.

"I had the same thing happen with another Voip company," taylor2767 writes. "I was given a temporary number until my number ported.

"Once it ported the number still showed up on my call log and I could see all of their call records," taylor2767 said next. "Apparently they reuse temporary numbers.. I had them remove off my account."

Reading these two posts, Vonage Forum Member roel then makes a post suggesting that taylor2767 "call customer service and have them change your virtual number."

Reading that last thread gives me the idea to suggest that you check out our Local Number Portability Forum

Vonage Forum Members often come to Vonage after realizing that Vonage service is a better deal than they have with their existing or former carrier. Even though they would like to change carriers, they want to keep the same phone number, which is understandable. In this section of the Vonage Forum, you will find a linked list of threads about Local Number Portability issues.

In terms of number of posts, our Local Number Portability Forum is our second most popular forum- behind only the Vonage Voip Forum. Here's the direct link to our Local Number Portability Forum.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!
