Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 16, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll find out what the creator of Vonage's tv ads thinks of some of those spoof Vonage ads that are being posted on YouTube. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads about port forwarding, and another question about router issues. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Woo-Hoo Ad Creator Is "Flattered" by You Tube Spoofs

An article by Julie Bosman in the New York Times quotes the creator of most of the Vonage tv ads as delighted that consumers are making spoof Vonage ads and posting them on the online video site YouTube.

“I consider it the highest form of flattery to show up on YouTube,” said Matt Lindley, an executive creative director at Arnold Worldwide in Boston, an advertising agency that is owned by Havas.

Bosman noted that Arnold created a campaign for Vonage, the nation’s largest Internet phone provider, that has made its way to YouTube in relatively large numbers. The original campaign, titled “Stupid Things,” is a video homage to daredevil stunts like those seen on the MTV series “Jackass.”

Since then, the easily imitated ads have inspired knockoffs on YouTube. At least 100 mock Vonage videos are currently posted on the site, and many have been viewed at least 5,000 times.

For perspective, Bosman writes that each original Vonage commercial featured a grainy clip of a stunt, which the agency culled from the Internet or “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” accompanied by the infectious song “Woo Hoo.” (After the video clip, white lettering over a bright orange background reads: “People do stupid things. Like pay too much for phone service. Switch to Vonage.”)

"The homemade Vonage ads on YouTube show people falling off chairs and jumping out of moving vehicles, as well as on-camera gaffes by politicians and television anchors," Bosman writes. "One Vonage video that was posted to YouTube on Sunday opens with a teenage boy banging his head against a wall, then rubbing his forehead and grimacing. (A caption accompanying the video explains, “People do stupid things, and I did one just for the sake of the movie.”)

Tell you what, Vonage Forum Members. How would you like to watch some real Vonage tv ads? Well, we have them archived on the Vonage TV Commercials section of the Vonage Forum. Just read through the descriptions of the 20 ad clips we have posted there, and then click on the link for the ad you want to watch. It will start playing in your monitor.

Speaking of the Vonage Forum, let's go there now and see what's been on your mind.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member Colin22 describes his issue in a new post he has started and named, Port Forwarding VNC - vt2442.

"I have the VT2442 router and I want to set up a VNC," Colin 22 writes. "I have tried everything from using the port forwarding preset for VNC to making my own custom rules. I know this is not local problem, a simple port scan of my local IP reveals that ports 5800 and 5900 (the default for VNC) are indeed open.

"Also, the people on my LAN can connect by using my local IP," he adds. "However, a port scan of my default gateway shows that ports 5800 and 5900 are not open, thus no one from the outside can connect to my VNC. In fact, the only TCP ports that are open regardless of what I do are 21(ftp) and 22(ssh).

"There are also 14 miscellaneous UDP ports, Colin22 points out. "Anyways, I want people to connect to my VNC; I want TCP ports 5800 and 5900 open, not stealth or closed, but open."

"The VT2442 has trouble forwarding user-defined ports," replies fellow Vonage Forum Member arcking. "If you need the ports open I would recommend getting a better stand-alone router and putting the VT2442 behind."

A new Vonage Forum thread entitled actiontec mi424wr router and vt1005 has been started by Vonage Forum Member wayne.

Wayne's question sounds simple but it is quite vital. "how can I get to the setup page for the vt1005 which is wired to the subject router," asks wayne.

Replying is one of our most experienced Members, scerruti.

"I believe you have to go in through the LAN port on the VT1000 ATAs. I do not believe the configuration is available via the WAN port," writes scerruti, whose real name is Steve Cerruti.

"Since the ATA is going to attempt to be a DHCP server on its LAN port you really need to hook up a computer to it to do the configuration and not attempt to wire it to your router," scerruti explains further.

Then while Steve admits he is not certain about reconfiguring it and wiring it to wayne's router, he advises Wayne that he "would need to turn off DHCP and assign the LAN port a static address in the range of your LAN. While the VT1005 would try to forward all of the non-Vonage traffic back on to your LAN, no non-Vonage traffic (except broadcast) should be sent to the WAN port of the VT1005."

It Bears Repeating: Vonage Forum Passes Two Big Milestones

As I mentioned in Tuesday's edition of the Vonage Forum Digest, Monday evening found us registering our 32,000th Member here on the Vonage Forum. Our 32,000th Member is Blin2000. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, Blin2000. We look forward to reading your posts!

Also on Monday evening, we posted our 85,000th article on the Vonage Forum. Every time a Vonage Forum Member has opened a new thread with a post, or made a post to add to an existing thread, that's another article. So let's see how fast we can get to 90,000 articles. Heck, let's shoot for 100,000!

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
