Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 14, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Sorry we are a little late posting. You know how Monday mornings can be sometimes...

In the news, we'll find out how a racing team co-sponsored by Vonage did over the weekend. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads about a firewall-router issue and another about a router setup issue. And as we mentioned,  today is Monday, time for our Member of the Week. We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage's Racing Team Finishes Eighth

Pacific Coast Motorsports picked up a welcome return to the top  tent as Vonage co-sponsored drivers Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel piloted the team’s #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype to an eighth place finish in the ‘Crown Royal 200 at The Glen’, Round 12 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series hosted at Watkins Glen International Circuit, New York.

The team’s race took a turn for the worse on lap 52 as it was handed a ‘stop-and-go’ penalty apparently for avoidable contact at the first turn with the #5 Finlay Motorsports Ford Crawford driven by Michael Valiante. The Canadian racer squeezed Dalziel attempting to pass the Scotsman on the outside line, the pair clashed and officials made a questionable call against the Pacific Coast racer.

Dalziel served the penalty five laps later and spent the remainder of the race recovering lost ground, climbing back to a respectable eighth place at the checkered to score the team’s first top-ten finish since Round 9 at Mid-Ohio in June. The ‘Crown Royal 200 at The Glen’ was won by Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz driving the #01 Lexus Riley, their fourth Daytona Prototype victory of the season.

"I think it was pretty unfair to penalize me when I was being forced off track by Valiante just so he could make his move stick."  "It's a shame as we had a great car here tonight and if it hadn’t been for the penalty we could have been right up there challenging for a top-three finish. As it is we still came home in the top-ten, we said we wanted to enjoy a strong finish to the season over the last three races so this is a good start although we know we deserved better.”

"The points for eighth are welcome make no mistake but I think tonight’s a case of what might have been! It was just so frustrating at the start, just as we’d get racing again there’d be another full-course caution," Alex added. It makes it pretty difficult to get into a decent rhythm but we got going eventually and the #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley was up there setting some pretty decent lap times. Ryan did well to keep us in the points after the penalty, hopefully we’ll get a clean run in California next time out."4 percent.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member 7echno7im has begun an interesting thread that he has named, WRTP54G and logging with WallWatcher

"Does it work? I can only see systems changes," 7echno7im writes about the firewall program.. "I have the logging set to debug, and all i can see in the log is when i do system changes. Why would the include the logging feature and not have it work. I have seen that some models, in fact, do not work."

New Vonage Forum Member mchatel has done some research and as a result, has followed up with a post containing some of what he has found out about to date.

"From what I understand from doing some digging through Google, I don't believe this router (the WRTP54G) has proper logging built-in to it. It only logs the router setup commands, no router traffic info," mchatel writes. "Seems to be a lacking router in my opinion.

"I asked the question, for the same reason. I wanted to be able to see the router traffic, and to see what was being blocked," he explains as his motivation for doing the research.

Then mchatel describes his findings.

"Seems the only option is to either switch routers entirely... or disable the "firewall" capability of the WRTP54G (make it DMZ), and rely on a better software firewall solution instead, which allows for proper logging," he writes. "This was actually mentioned as an option for unsupported routers, on the my NetWatchman service. Probably the same idea could be used for WallWatcher.

"If you went with the 2nd option (DMZ router settings, and using software firewall) just make sure to use a software firewall that you feel is secure and reliable," mchatel recommends

"For me, I've held off on this for now (logging router traffic)," mchatel describes as his solution so far. "I hate having a router that forces you to blindly have faith in it, but I've kept the router firewall up, not wanting to go the DMZ method, and I have the software firewall behind it, in case anything got past that (or to mostly secure outgoing connections)."

On a new thread entitled Router Vonage Hook Up, new Vonage Forum Member thetrue1 explained his set-up and asked why it wasn't working.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Steve48 followed up with his strong recommendation that "there should be just one ethernet line from the router (any LAN port) to the Vonage box WAN port."

Now, guess what. Just a few hours after Steve48's post, thetrue1 follows up saying that everything is working. And then Steve48 added that he's glad it is.

Vonage Forum Member of the Week-Steve 48

It's Monday, time for our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. As you just read, Steve48 is the type who not only takes time out to give lots of detailed advice, but gives his time for straightforward advice as well. Nor is he the type of person who, after the problem proved just a simple one, to be irritated about why that question was asked anyway. Yet another reason to go to Steve48 again with our Member of the Week award. To browse a list of Steve48's more recent posts, click here.

Check Out Our Hard-Wiring-Installation Forum- Now More Than 3,000 Posts!

Over the years (almost 3.5 years actually) I've noticed many threads with questions about wiring-related issues. Sometimes these are questions from new Vonage Forum Members, other times from experienced Vonage users who are moving into a new home or apartment, and want to ensure that any wiring issues related to the Vonage service are resolved before they move.

And yes, there are those Vonage users who have encountered wiring problems and incompatibilities.

For questions related to wiring, we have a Hard Wiring-Installation Forum section here on the Vonage Forum. Over the weekend, our Hard-Wiring Installation Forum reached 3,000 posts. You can go right to the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum by clicking here.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
