Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 10, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll see where Vonage ranks among Voip providers as ranked by the number of subscriber lines.  We'll also go over two Vonage VoIP Forum threads - one on router issues, and the other about a router-related setup issue.

In The News

According to second quarter 2006 numbers released by TeleGeography, Vonage has remained the industry leader in Voip with 1.8 million subscriber lines.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Modem not seeing router, Vonage Forum Member iamme describes the exact problem.

"I came home from vacation and found that my cable modem would not work," he writes. "I had unplugged and disconnected everything before I left. (I had a 'little' problem with lightning a few months ago and they still have not buried the cable they laid after I switched to using cable for the internet).

Next, iamme tells us that he replaced the cable modem with the same model, but the only way he can access the internet now is to Ethernet the modem directly to the computer.

"I usually use airport with the wireless router. The Ethernet light on both the modem and the router and the internet light on the router do not light up when connected.," iamme adds, asking, "hat do I need to do to get my router to work so that I can hook Vonage back up?"

Vonage Forum Member Steve48 has some recommendations.

"I know you're asking primarily about your router, but I'd start by plugging the VT1005 directly into the modem and seeing if you get internet service to the computer through it and phone service as well, Steve48 writes. "If the problem is strictly with your router, then this should work."

Assuming that it does Steve 48 recommends that iamme plug his computer directly into a LAN port on the router and check out its configuration. Make sure that it's properly set to get its IP assignment (probably dynamically)," advises Steve48.

Next Steve48 asks iamme, "have you checked your cables? You know you have one that's working right since you use it to get internet service to the computer. Use that one to try for service to the router. Have you double checked the cabling to be sure that you're using the right ports everywhere?"

New Vonage Forum Member Yankee has started a thread called Multiple Vonage Boxes behind a Netgear 10/100 switch.

"Setting up a small business requiring 3 distinct lines, phone numbers, and answering machines. Have cable premium support at 7-8 Mbits/second," he writes. But then Yankee adds that his experience so far is that Vonage's recommendation of using the routing capability of the Vonage box and stacking them one behind the other is giving poor voice quality results on second and third line.

"I was wondering if anyone had tried a network switch between the cable modem and the multiple Vonage digital phone adapter boxes," writes Yankee. "This would (in theory) give each box similar service and eliminate the routing overhead."

It is then that Vonage Forum Member x9networks, who is a systems administrator, provides an illustration of his setup to which he adds this explanation: "I have my home setup like the below image, the WHR-G56S is use for QOS and have all the Voip stuff on the WAN. I have no issues talking on both lines at once, since they are both connected directly to the WAN."

But then EzCo comments directly on Yankee's question.

"I would doubt your cable provider would offer that kind of service (they'd have to give you three public IP addresses). However, you can easily do this with a router in front of all the Vonage ATAs instead of the Netgear switch," EzCo explains. "A Linksys BEFSR41 or 81, or a Hawking HBR49 would work well."

EzCo completes his post by advising Yankee to "connect the Linksys/Hawking/'Whatever router you choose' to the cable modem, then the three ATAs to the built-in switch ports of the router."

Vonage Stock Report

Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.81 a share down 12 cents from Tuesday's closing price of $6.93 a share. Total shares traded were 792.300.

Obviously though, Vonage stock is still a hot topic - from what I can tell by looking at our page views, interests lots of you on the Vonage Forum. That's a key reason why I have grouped all this news in the Vonage Stock Forum- which you can reach from this link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test. It's been getting a lot of comments, not only here on the Vonage Forum but on DSL Reports as well. Here's the link to the thread on DSL Reports where lots of their members (and me, as well) have been posting about the test.

OK, I guess I should get to the test itself.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen will be configured in the next day or so with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.  We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
