Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 9, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll find out about a new plan in which Vonage Canada users will be able to call five countries for free. We'll also check on what Vonage chairman Jeffrey Citron has been up to over the last few days. Then we'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about a blinking light on a router used with Vonage's service, as well as a thread about problems with Vonage's Wi-Fi phone.

In The News

Vonage Canada Adds Free Calling To Five European Nations

Vonage Canada has added unlimited, unrestricted long-distance calling to five European countries to its Premium Unlimited ($39.99/mth.) and Entreprener Unlimited ($69.99/mth.) plans. Subscribers to either of these plans can now enjoy unlimited long-distance calling to any landline phone in France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the UK, as well as anywhere in Canada and the U.S. (including Puerto Rico).

“Canada is one of the most multiculturally diverse countries in the world, with many residents wanting to keep in closer touch with friends, family and business associates in the most frequently called countries in Western Europe,” commented Joe Parent, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Vonage Canada. “Vonage Canada customers can call across the country, across North America, and now across the ocean, just like they were calling from across the street – easily and at no additional charge…”

“By waiving international calling rates to land lines in France, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK, for our unlimited plans, Vonage is once again demonstrating its commitment to delivering one of the best phone service plans in Canada in terms of value for money,” Parent added.

Vonage's Citron Buys Stock

Vonage  Chairman Jeffrey Citron has just bought $1.26 million of Vonage's stock for less than $7 a share.

Citron, who is also co-founder and chief strategist of Vonage, bought the shares on Aug. 4 at $6.41 to $6.90 each, he said in a filing today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member gcovington was having issues with a blinking power light on the RT31P2 router he uses with his Vonage service, he decided to begin a Vonage Forum thread which he has named,  Blinking Green Power Light?

"No dial tone. The green power light on my RT31P2 router blinks fast while the phone port light is out," gcovington writes. "The internet light is solid green. I read where a blinking green power light means the router is 'booting up'.

Then gcovington tells us that this has been going on for 5 days, and he'd appreciate some answers.

When it comes to answers, Vonage Forum Member Steve48 is often the first to respond - as he did on this thread.

"Are you getting an internet connection through the RT31P2? (My guess is no.) Assuming you aren't, then do you get a connection when you plug your computer directly into your modem?," Steve48 asks of gcovington. "If not, then you have an ISP issue.

"Assuming you do, then check and make sure that the setup of the RT31P2 is appropriate to your internet service," Steve48 adds. "Usually that means that the internet service is set up to assign addresses dynamically and your equipment is set up to receive an address dynamically."

And then Steve48 writes in the reply post that if gcovington's Internet service is good and the setups are correct, then he would conclude that the RT31P2 is dead.

"I'm guessing that that's the answer," Steve48 adds.

You know something? Most of the time, when it comes to Vonage-related questions,Steve48's guesses are as, if not more, accurate than most anyone else's facts.

Vonage Forum Member smilez008 isn't smiling about some issues he has been having with the Vonage F-1000 Wi-Fi phone. If smilez008 was smiling, he wouldn't have begun a Vonage Forum thread called Wifi F-1000 Phone is very problematic... very frustrating!

First, smilez008 describes the problems.

"Caller on other end can't understand what I'm saying. --The caller on my end sounds like they're on a bad walkie talkie --The phone begins a series of clicks that begin anywhere from 3 minutes to 45 minutes into the call," he writes. This has to be solved by restarting the phone.

"The phone uses more battery than can be recharged with the power adapter. So if the phone is low on battery, the phone will go dead midway through a call even if plugged into the wall," smilez008 writes. "The router is not the issue, it happens on four different routers on different ISPs.

Then smilez008 lets it be known that he has friends who also have the phone and have the same problems.

"Vonage tech support provided me with a factory reset code, but this didn't solve any problem," he informs us. "Don't get me wrong. I think the wifi phone IS ONE OF THE GREATEST CONCEPTS TO COME ALONG IN AWHILE!"

And smilez008 ends his post by saying he's so frustrated he's thinking about canceling his Vonage service.

But look at it this way. The fact that smilez008 took the time out to make a Vonage Forum thread about this issue tells me he's still searching for a way for this bug to be fixed.

Vonage Forum Member howiewifi seems to pick up on this, and as a result, he's written a reply to smilez008's post.

"Do you know what CODEC you are using?," howiewifi starts out by asking smilez008. "If you are using the middle setting, g.726, then the phone is known to have some troubles in many cases. If you use g.711 (most bandwidth/least compression), then it should be good."

Then howiewifi adds his opinion that CODEC g.729 (most compression/least bandwidth) sounds better than the middle setting.

Today's In The News item about the fact that Vonage Canada customers will be able to call five European nations free of charge gave me the idea to spotlight our Vonage Canada Forum section of the Vonage Forums. This Vonage Forum section offers a handy list of threads about Vonage service and equipment in Canada. Yet although this section is of primary interest to Vonage's Canada customers, many of the threads you will find here are about equipment, set-up and other topics of interest to any Vonage user. Just click on a thread and it will open. Oh, don't let me forget: here's the link to the Vonage Canada Forum right here.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
