Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 7, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll quote from a major new review of the Vonage V-Phone. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about a router problem, as well as a new thread about a wiring issue. We'll bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price, and a very interesting day it had on Friday. As I am sure you know, today is Monday, time for Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Vonage V-Phone Reviewed

Hundreds of newspapers are running a review of the Vonage V-Phone in their Monday editions. That's because the review has been written by Bruce Meyerson, who is a technology writer for the Associated Press. And most English-language newspapers are members of the Associated Press.

"The $40 stick — really just a USB drive pre-loaded with Vonage software and your account ID — couldn't be much easier to use," writes Meyerson. After inserting the V-Phone into the USB port, the software boots automatically in most cases, and then a small, orange window with a number pad is displayed. Depending on the computer, it took anywhere from 30 seconds to 90 seconds to complete this instant setup, which includes online authentication between the device and Vonage's servers."

Then Meyerson wrote about a quick fix that from the way he describes it, was easy to perform.

"If the dialing window failed to appear, " he adds, "usually all that was needed was a click on the orange 'V" icon' in the system tray or a quick trip to 'My Computer' to click the drive with the V-Phone.

"Because nothing is loaded on the computer's hard drive during setup, there's no need to gum up a friend's machine with extra software — making it less likely you'll get that look of dismay when you're messing with someone else's very personal computer," he points out. "Just disconnect the device, and all the icons and any other trace of your doings vanish."

Next Meyerson points out the device comes with it own jack in which you can place standard earphones commonly used in cellphones. "This jack is a big plus; it means you don't need to find the separate sound and audio ports on a computer," points out Meyerson, making a point that perhaps more reviewers shouldn't have been,

Although Meyerson didn't seem to be crazy about the headset, he wrote that the audio was on a par with many wireless calls, and when he was indoors, Meyerson says he frequently found himself "using the V-Phone, my laptop and a Wi-Fi connection instead of my cell."

Finally, Meyerson closes with information that the V-Phone is available online through Vonage, for $40 plus $1 for activation and $10 for shopping, and that retailers will start selling the device next month with a $40 rebate.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member cincy98 asks a question on a new Vonage Forum thread he has started and named RT31P2 Linksys router and BSNL dataone setup.

"I got a Vonage router for my family back in India to be able to communicate with them," cincy98 writes. "They subscribed for BSNL dataone broadband connection"

Next, cincy98 describes his Vonage equipment and connection:

Equipment description:
Vonage router: Model No: RT31P2, Make: Linksys
Broadband connection: BSNL connection in India (Dataone) - smartAX MT841

Connection description: This is how we setup the connection:
1.BSNL modem is connected to the computer with the USB
2.Connected Ethernet port on the BSNL modem to the Internet port on the Linksys modem.
3. Connected the phone line to the phone and obviously the power wire to the power in.
4. Connected the ethernet 1 port on the Linksys to the Ethernet port on the computer.
5. Logged on to the router from the computer and setup the PPPoE connection.

With those details provided, cincy98 then feels it is time to get into the details of what he would like help with.

"When the dataone internet connection is on, the phone will not work (no dial tone and no phone 1 led light).
When we disconnect the dataone internet connection and power cycle the linksys the phone works fine." he explains. Great clarity, absolutely fantastic. But we can not connect to dataone internet.

"If we unplug the linksys internet connection, dataone will connect," he continues.

Then cincy98 details what to him is the bottom line: "we cannot have both Data One Internet and (the) Vonage phone working at the same point in time," he writes. "We do have a workaround like I already described above but is there a way to make them both work at the same time without meddling with the connections all the time?"

Vonage Forum Member arcking steps up with some advice.

"Just plug the computer into the RT31P2<" recommends arcking. "Don't use the USB, as your modem can only use one connection at a time (Ethernet/USB)."

On the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum section of the Vonage Forum, Any easy way to have another "jack" outlet for my, happens to be the title of a new Vonage Forum thread that has been started by new Vonage Forum Member Cutaway.

"In a nutshell, I have a cable broadband for my home and recently setup Vonage," he writes. "I have my cordless phone base station near the VoIP adaptor near the broadband router (802.11b)."

"My simple question there easy way to make another phone' jack available (say on my 2nd floor) using my wireless network?," Cutaway asks. "I was thinking maybe there is some sort of wireless repeater' that I can plug another Voip adaptor to plug in another plain telephone."

"Is (the) only way to achieve this to hard wired to the home inside wiring?," asks Cutaway, who then "cuts away" to await responses from fellow Vonage Forum Members.

"A second adapter would imply a second line (that is, second phone number, second charge, etc.) if this is what you want then yes, a wireless bridge and a second adapter upstairs is what you need," Vonage Forum Member scerruti answers.

"If instead you want a jack upstairs connected to your current Vonage line without hardwiring then you could try a wireless phone jack," scerruti adds. "One wireless phone jack would plug into an electrical outlet downstairs near your adapter. You would use a splitter so that you could connect your cordless phone and the wireless phone jack to your adapter.

"The second wireless phone jack would be placed where you want your upstairs phone to go," scerruti explains.

Vonage Stock Market Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.91 a share, a big leap of 53 cents (+8.31%) from Thursday's closing price of  $6.40 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Friday came in at 1,653,200 shares.

Hardly a week goes by without scerruti (Stephen Cerruti) offering his expert advice on a number of Vonage Forum threads. As you just read in one of the threads we highlighted in today's edition of the Vonage Forum Digest, this past week certainly was no exception. We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner.
