Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 3, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 3, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll go over a new feature for Vonage Canada customers, as well as preview a leading thoroughbred race sponsored by Vonage. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread on a wired-wireless hookup for Vonage service, as well as another new thread about whether or not a router problem is causing static on some Vonage calls.

In The News

Vonage Canada Offers Free European Calling

Vonage Canada has begun offering free calls to Europe for Premium Unlimited Customers.

These customers will now be able to call any land line in France, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Britain.

Business customers subscribing to Vonage Canada's Entrepreneur Unlimited plan are also entitled to free European calling.

"Vonage Canada customers can call across the country, across North America and now across the ocean, just like they were calling from across the street — easily and at no additional charge," Vonage Canada vice-president Joe Parent said in a statement.

Vonage-Sponsored Horse Race Gears Up For Sunday

Several thoroughbreds are getting set to wrap up preparations for  this Sunday's $1 million Haskell Invitational Presented by Vonage.

The race, which will be held at New Jersey's Monmouth Park, will feature Bluegrass Cat, who was second in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and Strong Contender, galloping winner of the Dwyer Stakes last out. The others expected to start are Awfully Smart, Deputy Glitters, Electrify, and Seaside Retreat.

I love the names they give those horses...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread that's called Wired-wireless hookup, new Vonage Forum Member StvM asks the question indicated in the title of the thread he started. And Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G answers it.

"I bought a second computer and want to use my cable broadband service which Vonage also uses as the internet connection for it. The best solution for me would be a wireless connection. Currently I have a Linksys RTP300 router to use Vonage and my main computer and no other devices using the connection," StvM writes.

What I am going to do here is combine StvM's questions with Darrell_G's answers to each.

StvM: "My question is, what would be the best/simplest way for me to gain wireless internet on the second pc and how do I hook it up?"

Darrell_G: "You would need to purchase a "wireless" router. The Linksys WRT54GL is a very popular choice among users on this forum. The aftermarket firmware for this router will also provide you with lots of other features and options that will improve the QoS."

StvM: "Do I just get a wireless router and hook it up so it's internet-wireless router-rtp300 or is it the opposite?"

Darrell_G: "Basically your hook-up would be cable modem>WRT54GL>RTP300. The link provided will give you an illustration on how it should be set up. In the illustration, replace the WRTP54G with your RTP300 and the existing router with the WRT54GL."

StvM: "Reading a bit here I saw stuff about firmware and such. Do I need to download new software for them to work together?"

DarrellG: "The only firmware that you would need to download and install is the "optional at your discretion" aftermarket firmware for the WRT54GL. This is the firmware that provides more features for the WRT54GL. "NateHoy" was kind enough to provide some links for setting up the WRT54GL with the RTP300 and the firmware link. (Note the latest current build is Thibor 15c)"

StvM: "Should I just buy a WRTP54G and not use a multi-router setup at all? It seems like it would be cheaper to buy a wireless router as an add-on rather than the WRTP54G because I'm already a Vonage user and wouldn't qualify for the rebate."

DarrellG: "The WRTP54G is basically the wireless version of the RTP300. So the answer to your question is No. The WRT54GL is a better option for you."

I have to hand it to new Vonage Forum Member drezin for a Vonage Forum thread title that is short and to the point. He's started a thread that he has named, Static!

"I have Comcast Cable Internet service and up until 5 weeks ago my service with Vonage was GREAT! Then I started getting Static and not just small amounts of static, I mean so bad you could not hear the other person on the line," he writes. "I thought it was my cordless telephone that was going bad (that was a 2.4GHZ Uniden phone).

Then drezin points out that he went out and bought a Brand New Panasonic 5.8GHZ Cordless Phone, but that didn't seem to solve the issue.

"When I hooked up the new phone the static still appeared. I tried moving the phone to a different location, and even bought new phone line to use with it. Still no help," he tells us. "The problem is the static is intermitted, sometimes it is clear as a bell and other times it is so bad 3rd world countries would have better conversations."

He's called Vonage Tech Support and they switched the phone line from phone 1 to phone 2 on the router, but the problem is still there.

So to read the rest of drezin's post, it sounds like he is scratching his head.

"Maybe it is the router going bad? I use my cell phone more to call since I never know how clear my phone is going to be and that defeats all the deals that Vonage gives you," he points out.

Well, your Vonage Forum Members wouldn't want that to happen. So scerruti replies with his best guesses as to what is causing the problem.

"I personally attribute static to wiring problems in most cases," scerruti writes. "I infer from your post that the cordless phone is connected directly to the phone adapter. I would make sure that the phone cables are not bunched together with other cables. I would try connecting a corded phone just to rule out wireless interference."

"After that I would suspect a router problem but, it would just be a guess at this point," adds scerruti. "If you find there is a time when you are getting static it might be helpful to run a speed test (from this site) to assess the quality of your Internet connection."

Guess what solved the issue for drezin.

"Well I fixed the problem... seems I did everything but turn off the router and RESET it by hitting the reset button," drezin informs us in a follow-up post. "I did that and now everything is clear as a bell."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature !!
