In the news, we'll get the complete scoop on Vonage's quarterly earnings that it reported this morning, find out where you can hear a Webcast about those earnings, catch up on Vonage's stock. and read an interesting account on Vonage's effect on its home base of Holmdel, New Jersey since it relocated there last year. Vonage Announces Financial Results

Vonage today announced results for the quarter ended June 30, 2006. Revenue for the second quarter was a record $143 million, up 141% from $59 million in the year-ago quarter. Net loss for the quarter was $74 million, down 14% from $85 million in the prior quarter. Adjusted loss from operations for the quarter was $60 million, down 18% from $73 million in the prior quarter.

Vonage added 1,005,000 net subscriber lines during the twelve months ended June 30, 2006, including approximately 256,000 during the second quarter, the second highest level of net additions in the Company's history. Vonage ended the second quarter with over 1,853,000 total subscriber lines, an increase of 16% from the prior quarter and 119% above the year-ago level.

Mike Snyder, Vonage CEO, said, "This quarter represents an important milestone for Vonage, as we begin to report our results as a newly public company. We also see this quarter as a key inflection point on our path to profitability. Adjusted loss from operations declined by 18% from the prior quarter even as we continued to make meaningful investments in marketing to achieve continued growth. Total revenue more than doubled from the second quarter of 2005, primarily driven by growth in total subscriber lines and an increase in average revenue per line. At the same time, the direct costs of operating our business -- direct cost of telephony services and cost of goods sold -- remain well in control and in fact, continue to drive scale benefits as we leverage our cost base."

Snyder added, "We anticipate that our adjusted loss from operations will continue to decline over the next six quarters, and based on our current outlook, we believe we will generate adjusted operating profits as early as the first quarter 2008."

Second quarter 2006 revenue grew to $143 million, up 21% from the prior quarter and up 141% from the year-ago quarter. These strong comparisons were primarily driven by subscriber line growth, as well as by an increase in average monthly revenue per line. Total subscriber lines were over 1,853,000 at June 30, 2006, versus 1,597,000 at March 31, 2006 and approximately 848,000 at June 30, 2005. Average monthly revenue per line in the second quarter 2006 was $27.70, an increase of $1.07 from $26.63 in the second quarter 2005.

Improvement in average monthly revenue per line was primarily attributable to the telephony services component, which grew $.62 to $26.40 on a year over year basis. This reflects success in attracting new customers to Vonage's premium calling plans and the introduction of an Emergency 911 Cost Recovery fee. These increases were partially offset by the impact of promotional activity, such as "first month free," and a reduction in the Regulatory Recovery Fee, which occurred simultaneously with the 911 fee.

Second quarter results were also positively impacted by operating leverage benefits as the business realized economies of scale. Direct margin as a percentage of total revenue increased to 62% in the second quarter 2006 versus 55% in the year-ago quarter, with the direct cost of telephony services falling $.42 to $7.52 on a per line basis. Adjusted selling, general and administrative expense ("adjusted SG&A") declined to 40% of total revenue from 56% in the year-ago quarter.

During the second quarter the Company continued to pursue its strategy of investing in marketing for customer acquisition, retention and brand building. Total marketing costs were $90 million in the second quarter 2006, 46% above the year-ago quarter amount of $62 million, and 2% above the prior quarter 2006 amount of $88 million. Marketing costs per gross subscriber line addition were $239 for the second quarter 2006. The comparable amount for the year-ago quarter was $236. Customer premise equipment ("CPE") subsidy, a measure representing the net cost of a Vonage-enabled device per gross subscriber line addition, was down $3.32 to $24.68 for the second quarter 2006 from $28.00 in the year-ago quarter.

Average monthly customer churn for the second quarter 2006 was 2.3% versus 2.1% the prior quarter. The increase was attributable in part to the rapid growth in subscriber lines during the first half of 2006, a period in which approximately 800,000 gross lines were added.

Pre-marketing operating income which is a measure of the net cash flow from telephony services provided by the Company's existing customer base, was $40 million in the second quarter 2006, or 29% of telephony services revenue, versus $7 million, or 11% of telephony services revenue, in the prior year quarter.

For the first time in the Company's history, GAAP net loss in the second quarter 2006 narrowed to $74 million, or ($1.16) per share, from $85 million in the first quarter.

Adjusted loss from operations was $60 million in the second quarter 2006 versus $73 million in the first quarter and $63 million in the second quarter 2005.

Vonage Stock Rises More Than Two Percent 

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.09 a share, up 14 cents (+2.01%) from Friday's price of $6.95 a share, and p from a session low of $6.93 a share, and up from a session low of $6.83 a share. Total trading volume for Vonage on Monday amounted to 671,700 shares.

According to the Middletown, N.J. Courier newspaper, Vonage has added 1,400 jobs into the Holmdel, New Jersey area as well as over $686,000 in annual tax revenue since it moved from Edison last November, and it’s still expanding. That's according to Vonage America President Michael Tribolet.

“We’re the only company growing while others are starting to scale back,” Tribolet said. “It puts us in a great position to pick-up new talent.”

Besides the influx of jobs and tax dollars Vonage has brought to Holmdel, Tribolet also feels that Vonage has a positive effect on local business.

Tribolet  said that many of the Vonage employees use the local shops in Holmdel Village.

Furthermore, Vonage contributes to the local community by participating in chartable works through “Vonations,” which is Vonage’s charitable arm, Tribolet said.

Through Vonations, the Holmdel company has donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Walk, the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, and even Keansburg’s very own Terry Terrific who routinely holds drives for gift packages for American troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Vonations also helps provide phone service to families in need, Tribolet told the newspaper.


On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member dmk1974's voice mail light has been staying on even after he retrieves is Vonage voice mail messages, he decided to start a thread about the bug. He's given this thread the title of, How do I turn off the VM indicator? 

"My Uniden phones have a orange voice-mail indicator on them to let me know when I have a message," dmk1974 explains. "Sometimes, even after I listen to the message, the indicator remains orange. I reconfirm that the message has been completely deleted via the handsets as well as logging into my Vonage account. 

"I can't seem to clear it out if you will," he adds. "Is this a Vonage bug or a Uniden bug?"

"As we've seen many times, this appears to be a Vonage issue," answers fellow Vonage Forum Member navydavy2001. "Suggested fixes are to 1) Always exit voicemail by using the * button 2) Disable and re-enable voicemail from the Vonage Dashboard 3) Reboot phone adapter or 4) Unplug phone base and reconnect. 

"Any one of these or a combination may be necessary," he adds. "I've seen this problem myself quite a bit, and it has been around for some time."

Vonage Forum Member EzCo also joins in with some of his own advice on this.

"If you're still having problems after trying NavyDavy's suggestions, one additional trick that has worked for me in the past is leaving myself a message and deleting it," he advises to dmk1974. "That seems to clear out Vonage's system and they'll stop sending you the MWI signal."

Vonage Forum Member hookbill (who has 11 parrots, hence his Vonage Forum author name) had both a positive and very interesting experience with Vonage the other day. As a result, he put up a thread that he named Vonage Comes Through.

"They're putting in some culverts out on my road and as you can expect they cut a cable line," he writes. "I received two calls almost at once and Vonage transferred them to my wireless phone just fine.

"Just want to point out something positive for a change. I've had Vonage now since December and I'm still pleased with it," he adds.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test
