Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 31, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 31, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  I am sorry for the delay in posting this, I have been on International flights all day and just now I am getting into the office.  FYI:  Eircom  wireless broadband in the Dublin Ireland Airport had no problem charging my credit card for Internet access, but could not provide me with a working password/login.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, let you know where you can find out about Vonage's latest quarterly financial earnings, and learn how two race car drivers co-sponsored by Vonage did yesterday. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about adapters, and the other about taping phone calls over a Vonage connection.. And this being Monday, we'll meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Vonage Rises On The Stock Market

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.95 a share, up from a session low of $6.93 a share, and down just one cent from Thursday's closing price of  $6.96 a share. Total trading volume for Vonage on Friday came in at 137,800 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Financial Numbers Coming Tomorrow- And You Can Listen In

Vonage Drivers Finish Back In The Pack

The Grand American Rolex Sportscar-Porsche 250 race was held yesterday at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. The Vonage co-sponsored team of Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel finished 29th.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread that New Vonage Forum Member tool_army calls Motorola VT2442 or D-Link VTA?, he explains his question.

"I just wanted to ask if I should get the Motorola VT2442 or the D-Link VTA phone adapter?," tool_army write. "I currently have a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router and I'm planning to get a wireless router, but I'm not sure which one. Any suggestions with that would be great too."

Vonage Forum Member reebok answers: "Get a Linksys wrt54gl wireless router. I've noticed less complaints about the DLink than the vt2442, but it may just be because the DLink isn't out there as much."

Now here's an interesting question from the Hardwire-Installation Forum. Vonage Forum Member Row1 is thinking about signing up for Vonage service, but first he'd like to be sure that the connection he'll get will be suitable for taping phone calls. Row1 has started a thread about this issue and named it, cassette recording calls w/ voip?

"Right now, with regular land line, I tape-record telephone calls. (Yes the person on the other end knows - this is for business and it is all very formal)," he writes. "I do this with a Radio Shack cord plugged into a cassette recorder and this cord connects the corded phone to the wall phone jack (cord similar to radio shack mini recorder control item #43-1237, not the suction-cup thingy). This makes very clear cassette recordings."

"Can I use a similar setup if I get voip?," he asks. "Can I still cassette-record calls?"

"I would think so. The adapters simulate an ordinary phone circuit just as closely as possible," writes Vonage Forum Member of the Week Steve48, "so most equipment that works with a POTS line will also work with a VoIP line."

Then, on his very first Vonage Forum post, new Vonage Forum Member Telstar added his own experiences as well.

"Yes, you CAN record your calls using the Radio Shack device. That is where I purchased my phone recording equipment," he points out. "The results are the same as recording calls on copper."

Reebok Is Our Vonage Forum Member of the Week

Now closing on 3,200 posts, reebok had another great week of helping out so many other Vonage Forum Members with their tech issues and problems. He even stayed on line throughout this nice summer weekend to help. Not that other Forum Members didn't have great weeks as well, but it is time I think, to swing back around to reebok! So here's reebok, our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. To browse through a list of some of reebok's most recent posts, just click this link

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
