Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 28 - 30, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 28, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock. Today is Friday, time for our In The Blogs feature. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread on what to do if the power goes out, and takes your Vonage service down with it.

In The News

Vonage Rises On The Stock Market

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.96 a share, up from a session low of $6.90 a share, and up 3 cents (+0.43%) from Wednesday's closing price of  $6.93 a share. I notice this gain happened even though the New York Stock Exchange experienced an overall average price drop. Total trading volume for Vonage on Thursday came in at 359,300 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog would like to see Vonage offer a browser toolbar. That reminds me of the Vonage VoIP Feature Wish List Forum we have here. I think I will write more about that later on in this edition of the Vonage Forum Digest.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG writes about the survey released this week of pure-play Voip providers in which Vonage was ranked as the leader far and away: Vonage is the dominant player by a long shot in this segment. With 53.9% share compared to second place Verizon at 5.5%, Vonage is the player to beat. More interesting, perhaps, was (survey publisher Telephia's) measurement of the reasons people switch services. 12% are expected to switch to another service provider in a given year, which suggests that churn in the Voip service provider industry is much lower than the cellular industry, or the internet industry." Churn in this case means the percentage of subscribers that leave in a given month, year, or other time period.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch makes a link to Alec's post that I have just mentioned.

On David Isenberg's isen.blog, he writes a post that seems to acknowledge that net neutrality (which Vonage wants by the way) is not going to pass in this Congressional session or be enforced by the FCC. He then addresses to the big telcos that since you argue that net neutrality rules are unnecessary, now is your chance to prove this is true by playing fair.

Jeff Pulver of Pulver.com writes about how Voip would benefit if broadband services were a fact of life for all U.S. consumers, and an initiative underway that has a goal of making that happen.

Preston Gralla of Networking Pipeline writes his thoughts on who Vonage seems to believe their key competitors are. He also mentions one other company that he believes Vonage should perhaps think more about as a major competitor.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog wrote last week that he sees more competition for Vonage from a leading softphone provider (not Skype).

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog writes about the fact that Vonage will announce their quarterly financial results this Tuesday. He also points out that a new study from Infonetics lists Vonage as the Voip company with the most subscribers, but Vonage is facing increasing competition.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) writes about competition coming for Vonage from one of those softphone companies. .

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog writes about Vonage's Internet advertising strategy. He also has linked to a Vonage Forum thread entitled, how to check if phone line is wired?

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog now has a weekly podcast entitled, "This Week In Von."

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP writes his thoughts on Vonage's future. I don't always agree with Ken but he calls them as he sees them.

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy supplements her usual diet of very well-thought out pro-net neutrality posts and links with a look at how broadband Internet use is growing in the U.S. You need broadband access for Vonage.......

On The Vonage Voip Forum

We're in the middle of summer of course, and along with those days at the beach (I'm headed there!) come the risk of thunder and lightning, power losses, and Vonage service going out along with the power.

But there are ways around this, which encouraged Vonage Forum Member xbatmanx to begin a Vonage Forum thread entitled, Power Outage and now no phone.

"Ok I am really glad I found this site," writes xbatmanx (hey we are glad you have as well-Dan). "Because over the last 3 days I've had some very perplexing problems. Power outage no phone powered down whole system (and devices) after that it says I'm connected but I can't get any internet connection and no phone light, no phone."

Then an hour or so later, xbatmanx writes that everything came back up. "I powered everything down and left it off for an hour or so reconnected and everything is now ok," he writes.

Our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week Steve48 saw these posts and replied with some of his own thoughts and advice.

"The main thing after an outage like that is to power up in the correct order. Typically you power up the modem, then wait, then power up the main router (if you have more than one), wait, then the next router, then the computers," writes Steve48.  "I just went through two days of major outages. On the first day, the phone came on line by itself each time the power was restored (3 times).

"Today, after one outage, he adds, "I had to manually sequence the system to get the phone back on line."

Sensing that many readers were wondering why Steve48 just didn't have a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), Steve48 then quickly followed up to address this issue.

"I thought I had things all set with a UPS," Steve48 writes. "I have a moderately sized one with software to shut down the PC rather quickly. The plan was to keep the PC from crashing badly, then keep the network devices up.

"Unfortunately the shutdown software has a little quirk that I didn't know about," he adds. After shutting down the PC it automatically shuts itself off to "save the battery"! That can't be overridden with the manufacturer's software, but they've told me that it will work with XP's built in UPS service. I'll try that after the battery has had a chance to recovery from the fun of the past two days."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Maestro strikes up his own views on this UPS issue.

"I always get a separate UPS for the network infrastructure devices," Maestro writes. "I get a bigger UPS for the high powered devices, but most of my PCs are laptops that have their own batteries.

"It doesn't matter so much if the bigger devices go down since I will still have my network connection (I can use with a laptop) and my phone," Maestro adds.

Want To Suggest A Vonage Feature?

In the In The Blogs section of today's Vonage Forum Digest, I saw that blogger Rich Tehrani would like it if Vonage offered a browser toolbar. The fact that he kind of offered this as a discussion made me think it would be a good idea to tell you about the Vonage VoIP Feature Wish List Forum.

What features would you like Vonage to offer that are not yet available? Vonage Forum Members have started threads with their requests, and this section of the Vonage Forum is where you will find these lists. I also know for a fact that many people at Vonage read this section (as well as the whole Vonage Forum site) regularly, and are open to new service feature ideas!

I just checked and noticed the Vonage Voip Feature Wish List Forum is closing in on 2,000 posts. So why not suggest a feature, and help us get to that 2,000 mark!

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
