Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 27, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, and find out about a new Vonage sponsorship. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about how to tell if your Vonage line is being tapped, as well as from a Vonage Forum Member with a faulty MTA (no, not the subway, but a Multimedia Terminal Adapter).

In The News

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.93 a share, up from a session low of $6.80 a share, and down just 1 cent from Tuesday's closing price of $6.92 a share. Total trading volume for Vonage on Wednesday was 422,300 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

For Vonage, It's a Horserace (Literally)

There's something about Vonage and their sports sponsorships- fast cars, fast humans (track and field), and now, fast horses, too.

In New Jersey (where Vonage is based) the Monmouth Park racetrack announced they have signed a 3-year deal with Vonage to become the presenting sponsor of the Haskell Invitational. The 39th running of the Haskell will be held Aug. 6.

"This is a win-win agreement," said Dennis Dowd, senior vice president of racing for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. "We're extremely pleased to have Vonage sponsor our most prestigious race and look forward to a partnership with them that will stretch into the years to come."

The Haskell, which was inaugurated in 1968, will be televised live on ESPN from 5 to 6 p.m.

"We're very pleased to team up with Monmouth Park and become the presenting sponsor of this very prestigious race," said Michael Tribolet, President of Vonage America. "Vonage is a provider of broadband telephone services and is headquartered right here in Monmouth County, which makes this fit between us and Monmouth Park a perfect combination."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum tregona has started a thread that he has named, how to check if phone line is wired ?

He asks if anyone knows how to check if your home line have been wired "and if in fact, someone is recording your conversations? I am getting clicks and noises on my line it does look like this can be the answer."

"More extensions being picked up generally would cause a drop in line voltage," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member NateHoy. "Some devices exist that can detect that drop, and light up a light."

Yes, but what if you really are being wiretapped, or think you might be?

"However, if you are truly concerned about being tapped, and you are using a Vonage line, the solution is really simple. Don't tie Vonage into your home wiring, and don't use a cordless phone," NateHoy adds. "Use a corded phone plugged directly into the Vonage adapter. No exposed wires, no way to tap the analog line."

Because Vonage Forum Member pmkeating was having trouble with a faulty MTA, he decided to start a thread about it which he has called, dead MTA - what next?

I'm looking for some advice.

"I've been a happy Vonage customer for about 2 years. Unfortunately I got flooded and my VT1005 was underwater for a while... plugged in. Now the thing is toast," pmkeating informs us.

"The Vonage tech guy suggested that I just cancel my account and sign up again to get a new unit," he adds. "Obviously I don't want to pay for one if I don't have to, but does that make any sense? I can't believe he even suggested it.

"Assuming I don't cancel and sign up again (I honestly don't mind buying a new unit since it wasn't Vonage's fault), what are my options," pmkeating asks. "I know I can't buy a telephone adapter that's been registered already, but can I buy a new one from anywhere I want?

"Anyone been in this boat before? What would you guys do?"

Pmkeating is in luck in terms of advice, which he just happens to get by means of a follow-up post from Steve48, our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Buy one at any retail store and register the MAC with Vonage," Steve48 suggests. "It's best if the package specifies that it's for Vonage. There have been issues from time to time with units sold at retail that were not in Vonage's data base and were not accepted.

ThenSteve48 adds something that's important. He suggests that pmkeating try to deal with a retailer who will allow him to return the unit if he can't get it registered with Vonage.

"I picked up a PAP2 - (CompUSA) was $10 cheaper than anyone else) and activated via the Web," pmkeating then updates us, quickly following with a post in which he writes, "online registration was a snap. I was up and running in about 10 minutes."

What Does All That Alphabet Soup Mean?

That last thread  we went over today, sure had several abbreviations! So do all those abbreviations you read about in Vonage Forum threads and elsewhere confuse you? Well, we have a handy guide to all VoIP-related abbreviations you are likely to encounter, and what they stand for. So if you see another jumble of letters that doesn't make any sense, why not hop over to our Voip Acronyms page? You can find it at

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
