Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 26, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, and find out something about Vonage's Internet advertising I'll bet you didn't know (and I didn't know either) We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about an XBox-Vonage issue, as well as a thread about a Vonage-Comcast issue.

In The News

Vonage Stock Rises For Second Straight Day

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.94 a share, up from a session low of $6.90 a share, and up 2 cents (0.29%) from Monday's closing price of $6.92 a share.  Monday Vonage rose eight cents over Friday's price. Total trading volume for Vonage on Tuesday was 476,700 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Ranks Third In Sponsored-Link Impressions

Sponsored-link impressions occur when a user goes to a search engine like Google, searches for a generic term (like "VoIP" or even a company name- and ads from either that company or others appear on the search results page. Every time one person sees such an ad- even if they don't click on it- that's one impression.

Internet marketing research firm Nielsen/NetRatings is now tracking this. For June, Vonage ranked as the third-most sponsored-link impressions, with 442.6 (000) sponsored-link impressions. eBay was first, and online shopping comparison site was second.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Sometimes we see threads on the Vonage Forum where the Member who started the thread came back with another post that indicated they've solved the issue. In other words, they have answered their own question. Not a problem, because that way Members who may have been inclined to offer their help can go on to another thread and help with the issue in that other thread.

VT2442 not working right with XBox live/ Router Question is an example of such a thread where a Vonage Forum Member posed a question, figured out the answer, and posted it as well.

"So I have had Vonage for about three weeks," explains Vonage Forum Member WEVans, who started the thread. "I have noticed that every since I hooked up my XBox to XBox live that the computer and phone would lose access to the net/dial tone.

WEVans then writes he called Vonage tech support and they had him reset the MAC address with a number from inside the computer. It worked for a while but then it stopped again.

" So I checked the MAC address again and it had reset back to the default. Seems that now just resetting the Vonage box will fix any problems I have after using XBox Live," he writes. So my Question is will hooking the Xbox up directly to the router then hooking the Vonage up to the router cable modem (MOTO Surfboard SB5100) | | Router (Linksys BEFSR41) | | | | | |Vonage VT2442 | | | |phone line and PC | Xbox so will this work better then have it all hooked up to the vt2442?"

But then in a new post, WEVans followed up with his own solution:

"Well after testing (a.k.a. playing XBox live) i was able to go right back to the computer and surf with out having to reset anything," he informs us.

Vonage Forum Member sportjeep starts a thread that he has named, Vonage and Comcast phone on same line?

"I have a family member who works for Comcast and gets the Comcast digital phone service for free. Her internet connection is shared with her sister in a different apartment," he writes. "I am wondering if the sister can get Vonage on the same line that the Comcast phone is currently on. I know if they are both talking at the same time it may not work due to upload but are their any reasons why it won't work at all?"

Answering is Vonage Forum Member brian188

"No reason what-so-ever. It will work, unless Comcast blocks it," brian188 says. "I've used 2, and 3 different Voip providers over a Comcast connection at one time. 3 different calls even, with caller waiting coming in. The only limitation is your up load speed and QoS."

I have some interesting news. Late on Tuesday evening, we registered our 31,000th Vonage Forum Member. So let us welcome our 31,000th Member, who is rchechik. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, rchechik. I see you have already posted!!

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner.
