Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 25, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 25, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread from a user who sometimes answers a phone call on her Vonage line but only hears silence, as well as a Vonage Forum thread about how to unlock a PAP2 adapter used with the Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage Stock Rises More Than One Percent

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.92 a share, up from a session low of $6.89 a share, and up 8 cents (1.19% from Friday's closing price of $6.92 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Monday was 474,100 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member sj2 starts a thread about an interesting but frustrating predicament. She's entitled her thread, On occasion, we answer a call and the phone is dead...

"We have finally gotten the hard wiring and cordless phones to work. We finally haven't had a problem calling out in ages," sj2 writes. "We have learned that if we don't wait at least 2 rings to answer, the line will be dead.

"Unfortunately, that isn't' a guarantee that we will be able to talk with the person on the other end," sj2 adds. "There are still times when someone calls, we wait 2 rings and answer the phone and the line is dead. There are also times that we have heard about people calling us when we weren't home and the phone rang 2-3 times and then went dead instead of going to the answering machine.

Then sj2 adds that she I has disconnected Vonage's voicemail and use the answering machine that is attached to the phone.

"Often we get messages on the answering machine without a problem," she explains. "We seem to have more problems when the person calls us from a cell phone, but at times a landline has also given us trouble."

Current Vonage Forum Member of the Week Steve48 sees sj2's post and has some questions for her.

"Is the SMC router a wireless? Are your cordless phones 2.4 GHz?," he asks.

Then Steve48 has some more questions.

"When you answer the phone, does the phone light on the RTP300 flash as it should when your phone is off hook?" Is it solid when you hang up?," he asks. "Does it behave the same on occasions that you have trouble and on occasions when you don't?"

So then sj2 comes back with some answers for Steve48.

"The SMC is a wireless router, but the Linksys is hooked up by cable to it. The cordless phones are 5.8 (I think that's the next step over 2.4)," writes sj2.

"We haven't ever paid attention to the RTP300 when answering the phone," she adds. "I did just unhooked the phone and the light started blinking and it went solid when I hung up, but as I said, we've never paid attention to it before."

Next,sj2 says she will try to have her family pinpoint that. "Of course when no one answers the phone and it doesn't go to the answering machine we won't know about that," she adds.

In a Vonage Forum thread Vonage Forum Member hayabusa started and named Pap2, he asks, "does anyone know how much Vonage charges to unlock the PAP2?" Then hayabusa explains that he's asked this because he has a few offline PAP2's he would like to fiddle with.

Vonage Forum Member reebok sees hayabusa's post and then refers him to an older Vonage Forum thread called, I have instructions on how to UNLOCK Linksys PAP2 Adapter.

So What Does All That Voip Alphabet Soup Mean?

Some of these Vonage Forum threads we highlight here on the Vonage Forum Digest sure have several abbreviations. Hey, do all those abbreviations you read about in Vonage Forum threads and elsewhere confuse you? Well, we have a handy guide to all VoIP-related abbreviations you are likely to encounter, and what they stand for. So if you see another jumble of letters that doesn't make any sense, why not hop over to our Voip Acronyms page? You can find it at http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-acronyms.html.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
