Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 24, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 24, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, read where Vonage ranks in the list of most subscribed-to pure play Voip providers, and catch up on when and where you will be able to listen in on a conference call where Vonage executives will discuss the company's financial performance and second-quarter earnings report. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about a cable modem issue, and the other about an apparent router issue- but one that just might have another cause. And because today is Monday, we'll meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Vonage Stock Market Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.84 a share. Thursday's closing price was $7.18 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage on Friday was 601,800 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Research Report Says Vonage Is the Leading "Pure-Play" VoIP Provider

Pure play in this case means service providers that are VoIP-only, not one of those big cable or traditional phone companies that offers Voip as just one of many  services.

Vonage continues to have the largest market share of pure-play subscription VoIP consumers, with 53.9%. Telephia's Total Communications Survey for Q2 2006 shows that Verizon VoiceWing and AT&T CallVantage were tied for second place, with a 5.5% share each. SunRocket followed with a 4% share, while Lingo had a 2.6% share. NetZero Voice rounded out the top five with a 2.5% share.

"Vonage has the highest share of the market, partly because Vonage had gone very heavy into marketing and advertising," an official with San Francisco-based telephony performance measurement information provider Telephia said.

Households subscribing to pure-play subscription Voip services -- meaning those who are either replacing or complementing existing traditional landline service -- rose from 2.2 million in the first quarter of 2006 to 2.9 million in the second quarter, according to the Telephia Total Communications Survey.

Rankings for the top pure-play VoIP providers are based on subscription services, and excludes free or pay-per-call Voip services, according to Telephia.

Vonage Financial Numbers Coming A Week From Tomorrow- And You Can Listen In

Vonage will report its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2006 before the U.S. financial markets open on Tuesday, August 1, 2006. The earnings release will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website at http://ir.vonage.com.

Management will host a Webcast discussion of the quarter's results on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at 8:30 AM Eastern Time.

The Webcast will be broadcast live through Vonage's Investor Relations website at http://ir.vonage.com

Windows Media Player or RealPlayer is required to listen to this Webcast. A replay will be available shortly after the live Webcast and will be available for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member msarrifi started having trouble with his Vonage phone adapter, he decided to confront the issue head-on in a new Vonage Forum thread he opened and named Time for a new phone adapter?

"I've had Vonage for over a year now with no issues, until recently," msarrifi writes. He explains that recently he's had an issue where people can't hear him but I can hear them fine.

"Browsing through the forum I'm finding out the issue appears to be with Comcast and the new 'Speed Boost,'" " he tells us, adding that he is going to try and pick up a used (Surfboard) SB3100 cable modem to replace his older RCA cable modem.

"My question is would it be beneficial to also get a new phone adaptor too," msarrifi asks. "I have the older VT1005. Is there any benefit to putting the phone adaptor behind the router? Any advantage to the newer phone adaptors?"

Vonage Forum Member reebok joins the thread, asking msarrifi to provide more information, including some testyourvoip results.

After msarrifi does this, reebok feels he has enough information to draw some conclusions and make some recommendations.

"I don't think you would have any reason to get a new Vonage device," reebok writes, adding a lot of people have solved all their problems by upgrading their modems. "The (Surfboard) 3100 is older, and more is said about the (Surfboard) 5100, so I would try to get that if I could," he suggests.

Vonage Forum Member pempey has begun a thread called WRTP54G Intermittent Bad Jitter/QoS - call delays/forwards.

"Having odd audio/forwarding issues. When I pick up the phone often there is a 3-5 sec pause before I get a dial tone or before a caller hears me when I get an incoming call that comes through," Pempey explains. "However, incoming calls often also just ring once on the Vonage phone and then automatically forward to the forwarding number I setup with Vonage (as if service is down)."

Then pempey adds that he is not sure what the cause of this is or what his next step should be, but his wife is urging him to switch back to a landline phone.

After letting us know about that, pempey raises another point.

"I also have a Panasonic wireless webcam (BL-C30A)," he writes. "When someone is accessing it, the above problem get much worse (very choppy audio). I didn't mention it above as it seems fairly independent to the above problem as it occurs even when the camera is unplugged."

Now that he has introduced the webcam issue, pempey summarizes exactly what he is looking for here.

"I'm looking for the best setup," states pempey. "Seems like I need a better way to prioritize voice? Ideally would love to get it all to work with the webcam being accessed.

"Past posts seem to be pretty negative towards the WRTP54G," he points out. "Should I pursue another wireless router and just put the vonage appliance behind it (this one or my old PAP2)?"

Vonage Forum Member reebok responds with his thoughts that the wireless webcam could be the source of the issues here.

"The wrtp54g could prioritize the voice traffic since it's directly connected to the cable modem, but I'm pretty sure, and your complaint seems to reinforce it, that wireless connections screw it up," reebok writes. "If it was wired, you wouldn't have the increased problem. "This is true of all wireless routers that I know about. There is a wireless QoS, but your router and wireless device have to both support it."

Now With More Than 2,000 Posts, Steve48 Is Our Member of the Week

For those of you who come to the Vonage Forum regularly, you know that Steve48 is consistently one of our most helpful Members. He always provides quality answers.

But Steve48's helpfulness around here is not just a matter of quality, but about quantity. I can say this because over the weekend, Steve48 amassed his 2,000th post here on the Vonage Forum. He's only one of two Vonage Forum Members to reach that level, and the first to get there in many months since reebok. Steve48 also had another great week, so given everything, who better to get Vonage Forum Member of the Week than Steve48?

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
