Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, as well as a new review of the Vonage V-Phone as well as a key executive appointment. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread from a Vonage Forum Member looking for an adapter, and from another Vonage Forum Member looking for help diagnosing intermittent voice break-up.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.97a  share, up from a session low of $6.93 a share. Monday's closing price was $7.08 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Tuesday was 476,300 shares.

Reviewer Likes The Vonage V-Phone

"V-Phone is an orange thumb-size USB key that has the Vonage service built inside," writes reviewer Tamara Chuang of the Orange County Register. "A headset is included and fits in the headphone jack on the V-Phone.

"I plugged V-Phone into my computer and the software launched," she writes in today's editions. "Suddenly, I'm staring at a 12-button virtual keypad on my computer screen so I start dialing. Everything works just like a phone.

"I make a few calls and people tell me I sound soft. I hold the headset's mouthpiece closer to my mouth," Chuang adds. "Trust me, it's cheap. But it works."

Vonage Human Resources Now Under Gunn

Vonage announced yesterday that Robert "Sandy" Gunn has been appointed Executive Vice President, Human Resources. Sandy will report directly to Vonage CEO Michael Snyder.

Gunn comes to Vonage from EMI Music North America, where he served as senior vice president, Human Resources. 

"We are very excited that Sandy has decided to join Vonage," said Vonage's CEO Mike Snyder. "His vast experience in spearheading upgrades to Human Resources strategies and services for several industry leaders will make Sandy an invaluable member of our team."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member knlmagic may not be looking for magic, but he would like some help in regard to the Vonage Forum thread that he's started and named,  220 Volt Power Adapter for the WRTP54G Router.

"Would appreciate any help in locating a Power Adapter for the Vonage WRPT54G Linksys Wireless Router which can accept an Input of at least 220 Volts," he writes. "The default Power Adapter that ships with the Router only accepts up to 120 Volts. 

"It would be great if someone could give me some direction as to where I can obtain/purchase the Power Adapter accepting at least 220 Volts as input," adds knlmagic, whose first name is Kunal and who now lives in California.

Like "magic," knlmagic soon gets a reply from none other than our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week, VonageTPA

"Your best bet is to buy a 230v adapter in the host country in which you desire to operate it. FAR less expensive to buy one there than it will be to buy one in the 'states," VonageTPA writes. 

Then VonageTPA adds his opinion that as far as running one of these in the USA on 240v, don't. "The USA 240v system isn't like the system used in Europe and this can lead to a dangerous condition (no equipment ground.)," he explains.

Because Vonage Forum Member gagoots was having some trouble with his Vonage service, he started a post called Diagnose Me. After submitting the results of his testyourvoip test and our Voip speed test (info about both appears just below), he writes, "he problem is intermittent, but is always MY voice "breaking up" and I'm not 100% about this...but it seems to happen on outgoing calls...oh and the Vonage router is a Linksys RT31PT2."

"My guess is that you're having problems with your internet service, but intermittent problems are always the hardest to track down," answers Vonage Forum Member Steve48 after reading the results. "When it happens, does it persist long enough to run some tests? If so, get a comparison test before the problem using both the testyourvoip site and the forum Voip test and record the detailed results (everything- you haven't really included everything in your last post). 

"Then try to do the same when the problem is occurring," Steve48 continues. "If the problem persists long enough, and especially if you can see a difference in the two sets of test results, try to remove the RT31P2 and repeat the tests with the computer plugged directly into your modem."

Steve48 adds that there is nothing in the results gagoots provides that readily explains the tech issues. But then Steve asks if there are other issues, such as cable reception from the same cable broadband Internet service provider that gagoots uses to run his Vonage service on.

Then gagoots says that the next time this happens, he will check his cable television reception as Steve48 has suggested.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read in the Diagnose Me thread we highlighted above, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with his Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
