Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 18, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 18, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, as well as a donation Vonage made to an open source software development fund and a new technology that lets you record Vonage calls. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about turning off Vonage's voice mail in favor of the answering technology that came with a phone used with the Vonage service. Another thread covers whether or not a specific adapter used with the Vonage service is worth a try, and what user's experiences have been with it.

In The News

Vonage Stock Price Rises Nearly Five Percent

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.08 a share, up from a session low of $6.77 a share and up 32 cents (+4.73%) from Friday's closing price of $6.58 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Monday was 989,100 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Donates To Open Source Project

Today's Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald has an interesting piece by Sam Varghese on Theo de Raadt ,founder of open source operating system OpenBSD. One of the best-known applications OpenBSD has put out is OpenSSH, which is used for remote administration on many platforms. Many vendors, Sun and IBM among them, use modified versions of OpenSSH.

The project's needs are largely met through donations. The newspaper reports that when finances appeared to be low a few months back, A few months back, Vonage chipped in $2,500.

New Vonage-Compatible Call Recording Technology Is Released

Based in Richmond Hill, Ontario Canada, call recording software developer Arcosoft Inc. today announced the release of VONaLink SoloRecord. SoloRecord works with any Voip phone system based on the open SIP standard, such as Vonage, to record phone calls and to provide screen pops.

The technology is being pitched to call centers.

The call is recorded as a stereo WAV or MP3 file. Arcosoft says an inaudible watermark can be added to the recording for later verification that the file has not been changed.

Using the caller ID of the incoming call, SoloRecord searches for the caller in Microsoft Outlook contacts, or launches custom applications to search the web or your company database. If the caller is found, the information appears as a pop-up on the screen.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Now here's an interesting question, one that we don't see here too often. Vonage Forum Member BAYsic is looking for some "basic" instructions on how to turn off the voice mail service that comes with his Vonage account, and use the answering function that comes bundled in with his phone instead. He's kicked off a Vonage thread entitled Need instructions for disabling voicemail.

"I want to turn off my Vonage voicemail and just use the traditional answering machine that comes with my phone," BAYsic writes." Does anyone know how to do this or if it is possible?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member mundy5 posts instructions on how to do this.

"Yes you can disable your voicemail through Vonage. "You will need to go to and login into your account. There select voicemail and then select voicemail options," mundy5 explains.

"Near the bottom of the page, you will find an enable and a disable voicemail radio button," adds mundy5. "Select the disable voicemail and save the setting. Your old answering machine should be all set to go."

We often get Vonage Forum threads in which a new Member about to sign up for Vonage service or even an ongoing Member with Vonage Service wants to find out fellow Vonage Forum Member's experiences with specific routers, adapters, phone other gear used with the Vonage service.

In that vein, New Vonage Forum Member brfctony says he is about to sign up for Vonage service but before he does he wants to check up on the D-Link VTA and get other's experiences with it. Because brfctony wanted to know this he decided to begin a new Vonage Forum thread to which he gave it the name, D-Link VTA and router problems?

"I think I'm about ready to sign up for Vonage but I have some concerns about the D-Link VTA box based on a couple of recent posts," writes brfctony. "I would be connecting the VTA to my pre-existing Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. I would think this would be quite a common configuration.

"Does anyone have any comments about how well it works, known problems, quality issues, etc.?," he asks.

New Vonage Forum Member s3n is first up.

"I've been using Vonage for 2 weeks and that's the setup I have," s3n confirms. "I installed DD-WRT firmware on the router so I can fine-tune my Voip settings, but so far I haven't needed to change anything.

"The router is also connected to a wired PC, wireless laptop, and wireless Squeezebox," adds s3n.

Also offering his experiences is fellow Vonage Forum Member Jacks.

"Nothing to worry just connect the VTA to the existing router and login to the router page and you can see check the DHCP client and check mac address and IP of the VTA," writes Jacks. "Once you get the ip address on the DHCP client you can able to login to the VTA and whatever configuration you need you can do it...... if you need more info get back to me."

How To Send A Private Message

I couldn't help but notice that at the end of the last thread I just reviewed, Vonage Forum Member Jacks tell s fellow Vonage Forum Member brfctony that if he needs more info, to get back to him.

One way to do his is by sending a Private Message. This is a good idea if you have a question as a post follow-up that you would like a quick answer to, but think that maybe not a lot of other Members might be interested in (although you never know).

To send a Private Message to another Vonage Forum Member, look for the PM icon on the bottom of any post. Click on it, and a new window will open up entitled, "Send a new private message."

Type in a Subject name directly related to what you are going to ask about. Sometimes repeating a point you would like clarification about makes a good PM Subject line. Write your message in the Message Body box directly below. Using the toolbars to the top and the left of the Message Body box, you can even add stuff like bold face, italics, and if you prefer, an emoticon.

Then when you complete your PM, you can click the SpellCheck icon to examine your message for typos, and/or the Preview icon to give your PM one last read over before you send it. To send the actual message, click the Submit button.

Should the Vonage Forum Member you have "PM'd" choose to reply, you should get a notification message in your email. That message should contain a link that when you click on it, will take you to your Vonage Forum Message inbox and a list of your messages with the subject line for the newest PM you have just received at the top of that list.  That subject line will have a link that when you click on it, will display the text of the reply you have just gotten to the PM you sent.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, !!
