In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, as well as find out how a Vonage-sponsored track and field star is doing. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about Vonage's SimulRing feature, as well as a thread about setting a Vonage-compatible adapter for voice priority. And because today is Monday, we'll meet our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage Stock Price Rises Nearly Three Percent

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.76 a share, up from a session low of $6.50 a share and up 18 cents (2.74%) from Thursday's closing price of $6.58 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Friday was 667,600 shares.

Vonage Sponsored Track Star Gets Ready For Season's Second Half

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a thread named SimulRing Problem: Phones ring once then stops that has been posted on the Vonage U.K. Forum section of the Vonage Forum, Vonage Forum Member avondale describes his issue. 

I have an urgent problem with SimulRing that is causing us loss of business," writes avondale. "We have 2 Vonage numbers. When a customer calls our Primary Vonage number, SimulRing is set up so that this Primary number, the second Vonage number and 1 BT land line number and 1 Telewest land line number, all ring at the same time.

Avondale, whose first name is Mark, says this setup works if no one at his business is talking on any of these phones when the incoming customer call is made, i.e., all the phones will keep ringing until we pick one of them up.

"However, if, for example, I am talking to someone on the BT land line and another customer calls us on the primary Vonage number, all the phones ring ONCE only and then stop," avondale writes. "When I have asked the customer making the call what they hear under these circumstances, they say they hear the recorded BT message of the BT phone that I am on, telling them the phone is engaged and to leave a message!"

Having laid the groundwork, avondale now gets down to business by asking two specific questions.

"The questions I have is why don't the other 2 Vonage phones and 1 Telewest phone keep ringing until one of my colleagues can get a chance to pick one of them up," ask avondale, and how can I get round the problem of an 'in-use' BT land line disrupting the SimulRing setup as I need it to be able to receive in-coming calls."

Vonage Forum Member Gordy0141 logs on from Glasgow, Scotland with his take on the issues avondale has reported.

"If someone is calling your primary number then all the other phones should ring well thats what I would imagine anyway," he writes. But (if) what (you are) saying is if you get and incoming call on your primary number and simulring diverts to all the numbers in the list and you answer it on the BT number in the list then you then get a second call while still on he bt line and then all the other phones ring once and stop and you customer tells you they get the message saying your engaged and to leave a message from bt," he adds, "then it sounds like you have the bt voicemail service active on your bt line and that's answering your calls when the bt line is busy in theory you would need to disable the bt voicemail service on your bt line," Gordy0141 explains.

If you want voicemail to be active," adds Gordy0141, " you only need it to be active on one line only and that would be your primary line."

Vonage Forum Member shamoo joins in. 

"That is correct," he confirms to what Gordy0141 has posted. "Simulring works by allowing the first available connection to connect. If your BT number is in use, and the Simulring feature just rings once, that means your BT answering machine/voicemail system is picking up and thus canceling the diversion feature."

Shamoo then adds that as what Gordy0141 has suggested, that avondale should disable is BT answering system and try again.

"This is also the case for mobile/cell phones," shamoo adds. "I never suggest any Vonage customers to put a Simulring on a cell/mobile number as it's own voicemail system will usually pick up if the phone is off or out of range, thus not allowing the other phone to ring enough."

New Vonage Forum Member tdoman begins a thread that he's calling How Do I Set Voice Priority on Motorola VT1005V?

"I have the Motorola VT1005V connected to a Netgear router," tdoman writes. "Is it possible to set it up so voice traffic always gets the highest priority over internet traffic from my computer?

"Every time I start a large download on my computer, somebody calls me and my phone is all choppy because of the download and it's very annoying," tdoman lets us know. "Do I need to buy a special linksys Vonage router to do this kind of setting?"

Two helpful posts were added to this thread.

I also have the Motorola VT1005 adapter and I thought that the Voip QoS was already implemented (p.29 of the manual). I don't have problems with voice quality during downloads.

"How do you have your system configured?, i.e.: - -> cable or DSL modem, . then - V Motorola VT1005 --> telephone, . then - V LAN (router/switch/computer/etc.). 

"With this configuration all traffic must go through the VT1005," xnewuser user explains. "I would think if your adapter is simply hooked to your LAN like any other device, it wouldn't manage the Voip QoS. In that case you would have to configure your router or cable/DSL modem to manage Voip traffic priority (if possible)."

Next, tdoman gets some advice from reebok, by far and away the Vonage Forum Member with the most posts to date (around 3,170 and no one else even has 2,000).

"Chances are your netgear does not have QoS. check your manual. you can either do what xnewuser recommends and put the MTA first, or get a real router like a linksys wrt54gl for instance, replace your netgear, and setup QoS with it" reebok writes. "The MTA is pretty much a wimpy device that was designed for the average home web surfer who has one computer and no network. 

"That's not to say it won't work for you," adds reebok to tdoman, "but others have had issues. might as well give it a shot, after all, it could be a free solution."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
