Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 13, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 13, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock.  We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about router-related QoS, and another thread about a dial tone problem a Vonage Forum Member has been experiencing with his Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage Stock Price Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.02 a share, up from a session low of $6.94 a share at the start of the trading day. Tuesday's closing price was $7.04 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Wednesday was 1,086,000 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread named Routers with QoS, new Vonage Forum Member cumptrnrd discusses what he would like to find out.

"I've had Vonage at my apartment for a little over 6 months now, and without QoS, everything has been fine since I'm the only one using the internet," he writes. "I usually stop all internet traffic when I need to use my Vonage phone.

"My parents want to set up Vonage at home," cumptrnrd adds. "We're planning on getting the 1.5Mbps/384Kbps AT&T DSL service and want to get a wireless router with QoS. There will be 4 people using the internet there, so it would be hard to stop all internet traffic to use the phone. I've read mixed things about the Linksys WRT54G on this forum. Does anyone have any recommendations?"

Then, cumptrnrd adds that to him, overall, long-term quality is more important than price, as long as the price of the router isn't too high.

Vonage Forum Member rgnok is first up.

"Based mostly off things that I read in this forum, I got the Linksys WRTSL54GS a few weeks ago and added the (free) Thibor HyperWRT (Find it at firmware (Even though you can download it free, consider making a donation via Pay Pal!)," he writes.

"Adding the 3rd party firmware was a breeze and the router has been great!" rgnok points out. :The original Linksys firmware does have QoS, but it is not very good (I had practical experience with the Linksys QoS unrelated to Voip in the past), but the Thibor firmware seems super!

Then rgnok recommends that cumptrnrd look at fellow Vonage Forum Member NateHoy's article on configuring QoS on a Linksys WRT54GL at; "it is a slightly different router model, but pretty much applicable to the WRTSL54GS."

Then a New Vonage Forum Member named clownbarf (laughing over that one) joins in.

"I've been using a D-Link DI-724U Wireless 108G QoS Router. About $105 at," he writes. " It cleared up my outgoing voice problems completely." The URL clownbarf specifies is at

"It has the same StreamEngine QOS as the Hawking HBB1 and D-Link 'broadband boosters' which are great for adding QOS to your existing router," clownbarf adds. For that, he suggests going to

"Now when I upload huge files to work over VPN," clownbarf adds, "and my wife is talking on the phone at the same time, we get along much better."

Glad to hear that, clownbarf. And next up is fellow Vonage Forum Member ChrisFix, with a fix.

"I'm using the TrendNet TEW611BRP Wireless G that also has the StreamEngine QoS chipset and it is working very well (after some initial trial and error setup issues)," ChrisFix writes. "No issue with voice quality even when competing with SlingBox and XBox Live. My connection is TWC RR 8M Down, but only 512kbs up, which is the limiting factor for outgoing voice quality.

ChrisFix adds that when he bought the router a few months ago, it cost him just $40 after rebate.

"Just looked, and it is still $40 after rebate from NewEgg, which is a great company (that's where I bought mine, and a lot of other goodies!)," adds ChrisFix, pointing to this URL:

Finally, VonageTPA has his say.

"That TrendNet router looks interesting...might have to pick one up to experiment with," he writes. "The StreamEngine chip has received very favorable reviews in the forum."

VonageTPA then tells us he used to run the WRT54GS (v.1.0) routers everywhere but have slowly been switching over to IPCop systems.

"Freely downloadable, but it requires dedicating a single PC to it," he writes. "Don't get me wrong -- I still love the little WRT54GS (now the -L's) routers, but they top out around ~7-8Mbps. MORE than adequate for most of the residential connections out there and a great little router."

On account of Vonage Forum Member seanio not being able to get a dialtone with his Vonage service, he decided his next step would be to open a thread about the issue. He's named it (no surprise here) No Dial Tone.

"I have internet connection, and my phone light is on, but I have no dial tone on my phone, the only change I made recently was the addition of a WRT54G wireless linksys router," seanio tells us. "Also another really weird thing that happens is when i restart my Vonage device it transfers me to this page: , I don't know this is all really weird to me."

"BTW," he adds, "I have my cable modem hooked to my Linksys router which is hooked to my Vonage router which is then hooked to my computer, I have been working on this all day and I am going to go crazy."

Well, seanio, no reason to go crazy, because you've gotten help from Steve48- our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Which adapter/router do you have? Do it and the primary router have the same default admin page address and sub-net addressing? If so, you may need to change one of them. See this thread, writes Steve48, referring seanio to a thread entitled, 3 Lines with 2 vt2442's.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!
