Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - July 10, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 10, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about phone adapters, as well as a router-related thread.

In The News

Vonage Stock Price Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.67 a share, up from a session low of $7.65 a share. Thursday's closing price was $7.877 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Friday was 460,500 shares, slow probably because that's what usually happens on Fridays during the summer. Plus a lot of investors took all of last week off.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Phone adapter options?, new Vonage Forum Member jfitzpa503 explains his situation.

"So I bought a Linksys PAP2 phone adapter. It works very well. However, I need to connect other phones to my adapter. I could hire Vonage for $100 to wire my apartment, I could use a splitter and put a cordless in my room, or I could get a Uniden UIP1869V phone adapter," he writes.

"Does anyone have any experience with this?," jfitzpa503 asks. "How does the cordless sound since it is all wireless?"

Vonage Forum Member shamoo, who has been very active here with 30 posts just in the last week ("whale" of a start, shamoo) offers his insights.

"How many telephones do you need to connect to your PAP2 device? Vonage currently has the Linksys PAP2 device and the DLink VTA," shamoo writes.

Then shamoo asks jfitzpa503 if he physically wants more than one line, or if he simply wants to activate the rest of the existing phones in his home? "If it's the latter, yes you could spend $100 to have Vonage pro installers come do it for you, or you could get a cordless phone system with a base and expandable handsets," shamoo writes.

"The Uniden phone adapter is good, but it's quite pricey," adds shamoo. "If you're concerned with multiple phones, I would go with the expandable cordless system or the VTech 8100 (which only can hold one line, i.e.: No additional fax lines, voice lines).

Then jfitzpa comes back with a post adding that because he uses a wheelchair, an expandable cordless system is not his best option, and since this is the case, he understands his fax could connect to LINE 2 of the Uniden.

"Yes, this is correct, you can use the Line 2 on the Uniden for that purpose," fellow Vonage Forum VonageTPA writes. "I'm assuming you'd be using the speakerphone on the base then? Even with that, I'd still push for a regular adapter and get the equivalent Uniden TRU series phone setup. They have some with base stations, etc."

VonageTPA then explains that with a traditional analog Vonage adapter, you can use any combination of phones from any brand you want, including phones meant to be more accessible. "The Uniden Vonage adapter is just one of their regular cordless phones & base with a Vonage adapter bolted onto it," he writes.

New Vonage Forum Member vato516 has a plain-spoken but common question that he turned into a thread title: How do I restart?

"I Play XBox live and I keep getting connection problem messages and I've been told that restarting your router usually fixes the problem, somebody began to explain to me how to restart it but then the router did it again and i couldn't find the person again," vato516 writes, adding that his Voip router he uses with his Vonage service is a Linksys.

I saw vato516's thread and question.

"Unplug the electrical connection from the wall - wait 1minute - plug it back in," I wrote.

Answering that question as I did represented my 1,906th post here on the Vonage Forum. That made me realize that for well over a year, I had been the second-most frequent poster here behind reebok. I then got curious about which Vonage Forum Members were posting the most.

Because I was curious I went to our Members area and checked. I wasn't surprised to see that reebok leads the pack far and away with 3,156 posts. But then I noticed something else. I'm no longer second in number of posts. Thanks to a usual productive week, Vonage Forum Member Steve48 is now the second-most frequent poster here on the Vonage Forum with 1,910 posts. Not bad, considering that my first post was our first day on March 5, 2003 and Steve48 joined almost exactly 2 1/2 years later at the end of August of last year.

Steve48's already passed me, but it is not about quantity of posts so much as quality of posts. Because Steve48 posts have quality as well as quantity, I can't think of a better Vonage Forum Member of the Week than him. To browse through a collection of some of Steve48's more recent posts, click here.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
