Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock price as well as a new executive appointment. We'll also go over two Vonage VoIP Forum threads - one from a Vonage Forum Member who sustained equipment damage in a flood, and the other from a Member with a question about a bandwidth issue related to his Vonage service.



In The News

Vonage Stock News

The New York Stock Exchange was closed yesterday for the Fourth of July holiday. On Monday's abbreviated trading day on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.60 a share, up one cent from Friday's $8.59 a share close. Trading was a quiet 379,400 shares.

Obviously though, Vonage stock is still a hot topic - one that interests Vonage investors, lawyers for at least a few of those investors, and from what I can tell by looking at our page views, lots of you on the Vonage Forum. That's a key reason why I have grouped all this news in the Vonage Stock Forum- which you can reach from this link.

Vonage has announced the promotion of Timothy G. Smith to Interim President of Vonage Network Inc. Vonage CTO Louis Mamakos -- who previously served as President of Vonage Network -- will now serve solely as Vonage's CTO, freeing him to focus on more strategic initiatives.

As Interim President of Vonage Network, Tim will oversee all of Vonage's network and systems operations globally and manage Vonage Network's staff.

Before joining Vonage in July 2005 as senior vice-president of Network and Systems Infrastructure, Tim worked in various management roles for leading technology companies and organizations including Sun Microsystems Inc., UUNET Technologies Inc. and Wayport, Inc.

"We are thrilled to be promoting from within as we continue to shape our organization and are excited about Tim's new critical role with Vonage," said Vonage CEO Mike Snyder. "Tim has 20 years of experience designing, deploying, operating and maintaining Internet service delivery systems. Vonage will continue to benefit from his demonstrated record of leadership of technical teams and commitment to customer service."

Vonage Forum Member pmkeating has started a thread with a title that describes his issue: dead MTA - what next?

"I've been a happy Vonage customer for about 2 years," pmkeating writes. "Unfortunately I got flooded and my VT1005 was underwater for a while... while plugged in. Now the thing is toast. "

Then pmkeating adds that Vonage tech support suggested that he just cancel my account and sign up again to get a new unit.

"Obviously I don't want to pay for one if I don't have to, but does that make any sense? I can't believe he even suggested it," pmkeating adds.

"Assuming I don't cancel and sign up again (I honestly don't mind buying a new unit since it wasn't Vonage's fault), what are my options?," he adds.
I know I can't buy a telephone adapter that's been registered already, but can I buy a new one from anywhere I want?

"Anyone been in this boat before? What would you guys do?"

Steve48 steps up with an idea.

"Buy one at any retail store and register the MAC with Vonage. It's best if the package specifies that it's for Vonage," says Steve48.
There have been issues from time to time with units sold at retail that were not in Vonage's data base and were not accepted. Also, try to deal with a retailer who will allow you to return the unit if you can't get it registered with Vonage."

"The alternative" suggests Steve48, "is to simply buy one from Vonage."

I also see a helpful comment from Vonage Forum Member buckeyefan.

"I was in that boat about a month ago" buckeyefan confides. I drove over to Staples and bought a PAP2. After connecting it and setting the IP address, gateway, and so on I registered it by using the link on Vonage's home page. Total down time was no more than an hour.

"I also noticed that the PAP2 has, to my ear, better audio quality than the VT1005," he confides.

Vonage Forum Member jlahmeyer had a question about the Vonage bandwidth saver. That question encouraged him to start a thread that he then named, Vonage and kbps.

"Does the 30 kbps bandwidth saver really use 15 kbps up and 15 kbps down (total 30 kbps) or 30 kbps up and 30 kbps down (total 60 kbps)?" jlahmeyer asks in his thread-opening post.

Vonage Forum Member scerruti writes, "30 kbps (approximate) in each direction."

"It uses approximately 30kbps for outbound audio and 30kbps for inbound audio," adds fellow Vonage Forum Member shamoo. "Technically, it's only using 8kbps for audio data and about 22kbps for header information when you're set at the "normal/low" setting of 30kbps on the bandwidth saver."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test. It's been getting a lot of comments, not only here on the Vonage Forum but on DSL Reports as well. Here's the link to the thread on DSL Reports where lots of their members (and me, as well) have been posting about the test.

OK, I guess I should get to the test itself.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen will be configured in the next day or so with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
