Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 28, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 28, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, find out about Vonage's new V-Phone, which is announced today, and also find out about a celebrity-studded party Vonage is throwing tonight. We'll also go over Vonage Forum threads about a router problem and one about Vonage home and toll-free numbers.

In The News

Vonage Closes Up At $9.00 A Share

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.84 a share, up 21 cents, from the session low of $8.63 a share but down 16 cents from Monday's $9.00 closing share price.  Total trading volume for Vonage Tuesday was 837,900 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Will Announce V-Phone

Today, Vonage is expected to announce the V-Phone, a USB stick that holds Vonage software allowing users to make Vonage calls from any broadband PC.

The V-Phone will be a $40 product would let Vonage customers make calls by means of dialing software embedded on a memory drive that they will plug into a USB slot on a laptop or desktop computer. When the V-Phone is plugged in to the computer, the software will launch.

On Monday, Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron called the V-Phone a "phone on a key ring." He added, this will fundamentally alter the way people do business."

Although the device will be priced at $40, many people are expecting promotions that will lower the cost. It will be available to Vonage users in an initial version that will only have the Vonage software loaded. Some news accounts said that future versions of the V-Phone will contain additional memory storage capacity.

Vonage V-Phone To Launch With Celebrity Party

Today's New York Daily News reports that actors Liv Tyler, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Freddie Prinze Jr. as well as musician John Legend will help launch Vonage's V Phone at Aer tonight. And if you are wondering about Aer, it seems to be one of THE trendy hotspots of the moment. That's what I have read- I'm not often seen in these places. If you want to stand outside and watch these Vonage-endorsing celebrities get out of their limos, well, Aer (a fancy way of spelling "air," I guess) is at 409 West 13th St., in Manhattan.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I've been writing in today's Vonage Forum digest that Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron introduced the new Vonage V-Phone today. A Vonage Forum thread named has been started about it by Vonage Forum Member Pomeray. The thread is named, info on the v-phone.  That thread, which I expect will soon be full of posts today, is the 15,000th topic thread here on the Vonage Forum since we started back in March, 2003. You can tell this by checking the thread's Web address:

On a new Vonage Forum thread with the title, Can't login to RTP300 router, new Vonage Forum Member WhosThere  posts the results of his Voip Speed Test (more about that, below) and then goes on to describe his problem:

"Can't log in to Vonage Adapter (Linksys RTP300 using their default IP," he writes. WhosThere says he has tried connecting Vonage directly to the cable modem and he still cannot log in. He adds that he would like to set up "port forwarding" but he can't seem to figure out the IP assigned to the Vonage RTP300.

Then WhosThere gets to the reason he is going through all of this. He says it is because his phone connection is constantly dropping calls and is choppy, plus he feels his Internet connection is being interfered with. WhosThere ends his thread-opening post by noting that although he's replaced his Linksys router with a Trendnet router, there's no difference.

Several fellow Vonage Forum Members offer their assistance, including the Vonage Forum Member (of nearly 30,000) with the most posts, as well as the current Vonage Forum Member of the Week. So put it this way, WhosThere- you have the equivalent of a blue-ribbon commission answering your question!

OK, to the point, I see that reebok, who now has more than 3,100 posts, answered first.

"Give up on the pcx1100 and I bet your problems will go away. here are a few examples I have on hand," he writes. Then he offers links to several helpful Vonage Forum threads:

"Port forwarding isn't needed and won't make a difference," reebok adds. "Make sure you have a computer connected directly to the rtp300 to log into it."

WhosThere came back with a new post on the same thread, but a post in which he asked for a cable modem product recommendation.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member EzCo recommends the Motorola Surfboard. But it seems that Vonage Forum Member of the Week arcking has a different opinion.

"It seems some users have had problems with the SB5120, and its DOCSIS 2.0, so be cautious," he writes. "A lot of users have reported having success with "downgrading" to a SB5100 and its DOCSIS 1.1, but it seems the main thing is to have a DOCSIS 1.1 compatible modem.

Then arcking recommends that WhosThere check up on a thread entitled, Comcast, outbound dropouts, questions - Resolved.

Vonage Forum Member jlahmeyer was wondering if his Vonage home number and the toll free plus number make up two Vonage lines or is it really just one line. To get the answer, he decided to kick off a thread here with the name, home number + toll free plus number.

"It's one line,"arcking writes. "It works like a virtual number, forwarding to your home phone number." Arcking then links to our Vonage Toll Free Number User's Guide, which explains this in detail.

Then jlahmeyer follows up with a post in which he thanks arcking.

I like it when Vonage Forum Members who have been helped follow up with a thank you to Members who, you know, don't get paid to give their help but do so because they want to.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

Because one of the threads we've reviewed today was about a problem that found its resolution in part because the thread-starter posted the results of his Voip Speed Test, that gives me extra incentive to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.  We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Because of our long Fourth of July weekend here in the U.S., this will be a special Holiday edition running through Tuesday, July 4. Look for our In The Blogs feature, which usually runs on Friday, to run tomorrow.
