Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, find out about Vonage's new V-Phone and whether or not Vonage will continue to market aggressively. We'll also read some thoughts about a Vonage co-sponsored racecar driver on his performance last Saturday. We'll also go over Vonage Forum threads about a particular router that might be contributing to static on Vonage calls, as well as a thread about why a Vonage user might not be able to reach his home Vonage line when he calls it from his cell phone.

Vonage Closes Up At $9.00 A Share

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $9.00 a share, up 25 cents, and 2.86 percent, from Friday's $8.75 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Monday was 1,308,200 shares.

Vonage Will Announce V-Phone

In a keynote speech at the Convergence 2.0 conference yesterday, Vonage chairman and chief strategist Jeffrey Citron announced the V-Phone: a USB stick that holds Vonage software allowing users to make Vonage calls from any broadband PC. Citron said Vonage would formally unveil the V-Phone this week.

Citron Says Vonage Will Continue To Market Heavily

Also in his speech at Convergence 2.0, Jeffrey Citron said Vonage will  stick to its spending plan to attract customers. He said that Vonage will spend between $360 million to $380 million in 2006 to boost its subscriber base.

"Our goal is to continue investing heavily in our brand and marketing to grow our subscriber base, which as our business scales out, allows us to ultimately derive profitability," Citron said to reporters after his speech in which he talked up the V-Phone. 

When one reporter asked Citron about the lawsuits Vonage is dealing with, Citron said the lawsuits were not "particularly distracting."

Vonage Sponsored Race Car Driver Comments On Sixth Place Finish

I mentioned in yesterday's Digest that in Lexington Ohio on Saturday, the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve held its EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank. Held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the Vonage co-sponsored No. 89 Team Vonage/Playboy/Palms Casino team of co-drivers Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel finished sixth. The sixth place result earned the drivers their third consecutive Top 10 finish.

"It was an excellent race for us considering where we were in terms of set-up earlier in the weekend," Dalziel says. "We made some major gains between the warm-up and the race itself. It paid off and we enjoyed a more competitive car throughout our run. Our consistency is improving all the time which is encouraging as we head into the backstretch of the championship."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Earlier in this edition of the Digest I mentioned that Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron previewed the new Vonage V-Phone yesterday. A Vonage Forum thread named has been started about it by Vonage Forum Member Pomeray. The thread is named, info on the v-phone. And guess what. That thread, which I expect will soon be full of posts, is the 15,000th topic thread here on the Vonage Forum since we started back in March, 2003. You can tell this by checking the thread's Web address:

Vonage Forum Member VOIP_Geek has begun an interesting thread here called Motorola 2442 router and excessive static/noise.

"Had problems with my Linksys router and recently had it replaced with the Motorola 2442 router," he writes. "My service was fine before, now the Motorola router has nothing but noise/static since it was hooked up over the weekend." 

Then he adds that when going through old house wiring his demarc is disconnected. "Connecting my phone directly to the router is fine, but unacceptable going through house wiring. Wasn't an issue with the Linksys router. any thoughts, tips, etc.?"

Just so happens that two of our most expert Vonage Forum Members heard VOIP_Geek's call for "thoughts" and "tips."

"Household wiring is a royal (pain) to diagnose, but it's solvable if you're willing to troubleshoot it," writes Vonage Forum Member VonageTPA. "The first thing is to unplug all of the telephones from the phone lines and then connect them up one at a time and see if the problem is the wiring or a single phone with the phone line causing the problem."

And reebok, whose 3,126 posts are the most of any of our more than 29,000 Members, posts a suggestion that VOIP_Geek check out another new thread here called Motorola 2442 Humming Noise.

New Vonage Forum Member timmymao tried to call his home Vonage line from his Verizon cell phone but was not successful. That spurred him on to opened a thread that he's named, Verizon wireless unable to dial Vonage number.

"Today, I tried calling our home Vonage line using a Verizon cellular phone unsuccessfully several times, all from different locations," timmymao writes. "Each failed attempt ended in a prerecorded Verizon message that stated the call could not be completed.

"There was no problem calling our other home land line, no problem calling the Vonage line from a land line, and no problem calling from the home Vonage line to the Verizon cellular phone," he adds. "So could Verizon somehow be blocking calls to Vonage numbers?"

Once again, reebok comes up with the likely answer.

In his answer, reebok writes that "it sounds like a newly assigned Vonage number that Verizon doesn't know exists. If that's the case, you need to call Verizon and tell them to update their database with your area code and prefix."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
