Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 26, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, find out where on the Internet you can listen to Vonage founder and chairman Jeff Citron speak today as well as catch up on how a Vonage co-sponsored auto racing team did over the weekend. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about why you shouldn't buy Vonage equipment on eBay as well as a thread from a Vonage Forum member who can receive incoming calls over his Vonage line- but really wishes his phone would ring to let him know that a call is coming in. Finally, today is Monday, the day when we will meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Vonage Closes Up At $8.75 A Share

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.75 a share, up 10 cents from Thursday's $8.85 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Friday was 1,343,100 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Near A PC Today? You'll Have A Chance to Hear Jeff Citron Speak

If you are online this afternoon, you will get a chance to hear Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron give a speech.

Citron will speak at the Convergence 2.0 conference hosted by The Daily Deal and Tech Confidential today at 3:55 p.m Eastern time. He will discuss the VoIP industry and outlook during the Convergence 2.0 conference at the Museum of Television & Radio in New York.

His speech will also be broadcast live through Vonage's Investor Relations website at If you miss the speech, a free replay will be archived for about two weeks on the same website.

To listen to this broadcast, you'll need Windows Media Player or Real Player, both of which are available in free versions.

Vonage Sponsored Race Car Drivers Finish Sixth

In Lexington Ohio on Saturday, the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve held its EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank. Held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the Vonage co-sponsored No. 89 Team Vonage/Playboy/Palms Casino team of co-drivers Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel finished sixth. The sixth place result earned the drivers their third consecutive Top 10 finish.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I'd like to kick off our look at the Vonage Voip Forum with something a bit out of the ordinary.

From time to time we get posts here in which Vonage Forum Members say they are thinking of trying to buy Vonage equipment on eBay. One of our most knowledgeable members, navydavy2001 knows this is not a good idea. But because he wanted to let others know this not a good idea, he started a thread named If You're Thinking of Buying a Vonage Device off EBay......

"Don't," navydavy2001 writes. Then he links to an article he wrote with fellow Vonage Forum Member arcking's help, and which he's posted on eBay. The article is at

I read the article and I think it is so important that I will include it here.

Here's what navydavy2001 and arcking wrote:

Purchasing Vonage devices on EBay can be a very tricky ordeal. Simply put, Vonage does NOT re-activate devices that have been used on Vonage before. That means you can't use the them with Vonage! Sellers of these devices on EBay are looking to dump these on unsuspecting buyers.

For the sake of the non-geeky crowd, let's discuss what the heck Vonage is. Vonage is an Internet Phone system, using the technology known as Voice Over IP (VOIP), and travels over your existing Cable or DSL connection. You MUST have Cable or DSL to use Vonage. Secondly, Vonage will ship a device, known as a phone adapter, to you, to enable you to make and receive calls. Let's discuss the devices you have to pick from:

Motorola VT2442: Telephone adapter with 4-port router.

Dlink VTA: No router, only phone adapter.

Linksys WRTP54G: Wireless router with phone adapter.

Uniden UIP1869V: Phone adapter handset with one cordless phone.

VTech IP8100-1: One cordless phone.

WiFi UT Starcom F1000: Pocket-sized wireless phone that connects via WiFi to your existing wireless access point/router.

PAP2: Still supported by Vonage, but no longer offered.

RT31P2: Still supported by Vonage, but no longer offered.

RTP-300: Still supported by Vonage, but no longer offered.

All of these devices are subject to non-reactivation by Vonage, if they have been previously used with them.

All of this information can be found at .

Then, they add, "for the best tech support for Vonage, visit . Bar none, this is the place to go for any Vonage-related questions or problems."

Thanks, guys.

In a new Vonage Forum thread that has been named, No Ring on the Incoming call when Connected Through ONQPanel, new Vonage Forum Member voip98075 describes his issue.

"When I hook up my Phone Device directly to Vonage Adapter, everything works normal as expected. But , When I connect The Vonage Adapter to the ONQ Panel and then Connect the Phone to the Phone Jack on the Wall. - The Incoming calls don't ring," he writes.

Then voip98075 adds that although he gets a dial tone and can make outgoing calls, he does not hear the ring for any incoming calls. But if he picks up the receiver then his incoming calls are connected and he can talk..

"I want the phone to ring. I tried with 3 different phones, (but) it is the same behavior," says Voip 98075, sounding frustrated. Frankly, I don't blame him.

"I guess the Voltage Surge needed for Ringer is not being sent through the ONQ Panel," adds voip98075, who then asks if any Vonage Forum members have any input on what he should be doing to the ONQ .

VonageTPA picks up on voip98075's frustration and posts a response.

"I'm not a fan of structured wiring... I'd suggest disconnecting as much of it as you can, then slowly add back jacks until you start to encounter the problem," writes VonageTPA. He then adds that he wouldn't be surprised if there was a voltage filter to prevent back-feeding of the signal, or some other strange thing inside the panel.

Today is Monday, time to meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. Not only because of the eBay thread and post he worked on with navydavy, but for so much else he has done in terms of offering advice to you fellow Vonage Forum Members, let's give arcking our Vonage Forum Member of the Week award. In recent weeks and months, he's really become one of our most helpful and active Members. To browse through a list of some of arcking's more recent posts, click here.

How To Edit Or Delete Your Posts

Whether online or off, most of us have said things we later regretted, or realized we could have said or explained better. I know I have said my share.

I guess it is that trait in so many of us that makes at least some Vonage Forum Members curious about how to edit posts you have made, or even how to delete them should it become necessary to do so.

Here's an explanation of your options, as I explain on the Vonage Forum FAQ:

Unless you are the board admin or forum moderator you can only edit or delete your own posts. You can edit a post (sometimes for only a limited time after it was made) by clicking the edit button for the relevant post. If someone has already replied to the post you will find a small piece of text output below the post when you return to the topic, this lists the number of times you edited it. This will only appear if no one has replied, it also will not appear if moderators or administrators edit the post (they should leave a message saying what they altered and why). Please note that normal users cannot delete a post once someone has replied.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.  We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest,!!
