Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 21, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 21, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up with Vonage's stock price, and find out a bit about their latest executive-level hire. We'll also go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about the Vonage VTech phone, and another thread about using a particular Motorola Bluetooth headset with the Vonage SoftPhone.

In The News

Vonage Stock Rises More Than Five Percent

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $8.92 a share, up 5.19 percent and 44 cents from  Monday's closing price of $9.36 a share.  Total trading volume for Vonage Tuesday was 3,601,300 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Hires New Investor Relations Chief

Vonage has announced that Craig A. Streem has been appointed Senior Vice President of Investor Relations. Streem will report to Vonage CEO Mike Snyder.

Streem comes to Vonage from AON Corp., the world's No. 2 insurance broker, where he served as vice president of investor relations since 2004. Vonage noted that Streem has over 25 years of experience leading investor relations efforts and communications strategies for various world leading organizations including Household International, Paine Webber Group Inc., and American Express Co.

"We are very excited that Craig has decided to join Vonage," said Vonage's CEO Mike Snyder. "His vast experience in spearheading investor relations and communications efforts for several organizations will make Craig an invaluable member of our team."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member ddiego has started a thread with a title that describes what he would like advice about. He named this thread Want to switch to Vonage but NO rj-11 in the VTech IP8100.

I am willing to switch," ddiego writes, (and) "buy the VTech IP8100-1 phone but I also want to keep my current Fax printer. There is an alternative cordless with Rj-11 connection- or is the only option to go for a wired router, and use and hold analog cordless (phone?)"

Several Vonage Forum Members have replied to this thread with helpful suggestions.

"I'd go with one of Vonage's regular analog adapters and some of the Uniden 5.8Ghz digital (Tru/Clx series) cordless phones," writes VonageTPA. "Then you can use any sort of phones/faxes/etc you wish. I'm not a fan of VTech products either."

"My way of looking at it is that there are more things that can break in the combined router/phone," arcking writes. "If you were to go with VonageTPA's solution, you would only have to replace one part of the system."

Following up is Steve48, who just happens to be our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"I agree as well," Steve writes as reply to arcking's post. "You also have a much bigger selection of phones to choose from if you get a plain vanilla Vonage adapter and a separate phone."

I just went over to our Vonage SoftPhone Forum where I read through an interesting thread named, Motorola HT820. The thread, which is about using the Motorola HT820 Bluetooth headset with the Vonage SoftPhone, was started by jchitten.

"Has anyone managed to get HT820 working with Vonage softphone," writes jchitten, whose actual first name is Jeff. "I can hear the phone but it can't hear me (i.e. mic not working)."

Bshiflett, who is a new Vonage Forum Member, jumps right in and posts an answer.

"Yeah I got mine working. Basically what you need to do is set the softphone in the menu to use the Bluetooth Audio for your Mic and Speaker," explains bshifflett. "Then you need to activate the Headset icon in your Bluetooth neighborhood, the easiest way to know which one, you will see 2 for the HT820, one shows the headset with a mic, the other is just headphones, you need to have the one with the mic activated.

Then bshifflett writes that "you should hear everything fine and talk. Took me a bit to figure it out, but you cannot use the High Quality Bluetooth setting in the softphone. That is for streaming music to the headphones (which is cool and sounds great to me).

"Let me know if you have any other questions," bshifflett ends his post by writing.

New Members: Add Your Advice As Well!

I noticed in that last thread that bshifflett ended his post by offering to answer more questions from jchitten. While so many of our threads are answered by Vonage Forum Members who have been here awhile, I realize that many of our new Vonage Forum Members have a lot of technical knowledge that could well be applied to some of the questions that are asked in our threads. So, if you are new, but feel you have experiences and maybe even an answer to share, then follow bshifflett's lead and go for it!  You'll find you'll make friends here quickly, and the next time you have a question, it will be answered as quickly as you answered that post.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

So happens that both of our threads we highlighted today received answers partially as a result of responding Vonage Forum Members reviewing the results of the Voip speed test the thread-starters posted.

That is another reason I want to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.  We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, !!
