Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 15, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 15, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll check up on Vonage's stock price as well as a scholarship contest Vonage Canada is involved with. We'll also go over a Vonage Forum thread from a user whose Internet access becomes a problem when he uses his Vonage phone, and from a user with some router-related issues.

In The News

Vonage Closes At $10.20 A Share

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $10.20 a share, up 6cents from a session low of $10.14, but down 76 cents from Tuesday's closing price of $10.90 a share. Total trading volume for Vonage yesterday was 2,610,800 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Canada Funds Scholarship Contest

In an effort Vonage Canada says it hopes will help offset the high cost of tuition for Canadian students pursuing post-secondary education Vonage Canada has just announced a contest with scholarship matching service, http://www.studentawards.com

The contest gives students the opportunity to win one of five $1,000 scholarship prizes that they can apply to their post-secondary education and gives them one free month of phone service and a free VTech cordless phone when they sign up for Vonage service.

"Students are always looking for ways to subsidize tuition costs and living expenses while at school, so we feel this a great way to help out Canadian students," says Vonage Canada's Director of Marketing Programs Bruce Robertson. "This is why we are also offering students the opportunity to save on their phone bills by offering one free month of phone service and a free VTech cordless phone when they sign up with Vonage.

"The Vonage  phone service with its full-feature set, its flat-rate unlimited calling plan is a good fit for any student looking to save some extra cash while at school," Robertson added."

This contest is open to all students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Students can enter to win one of five $1,000 scholarships by visiting http://www.studentawards.com/  and clicking on the Vonage banner ad. No purchase is necessary. Students can increase their chances of winning by telling their friends about the contest. Students can
refer up to five friends on the "Tell a Friend" page. For each friend that signs up for Vonage home phone service, the student will automatically receive an additional contest entry. All students who sign up for Vonage get one
month of free phone service and a free VTech cordless phone (valued at $34.99).

The contest runs until September 5, 2006.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member davmantx has started a thread with a title that describes his problem: Http Access (webpage surfing) goes down when using Phone.

"I'm new to Vonage as of last week, and have a question but not sure if someone can help," he writes. "I also looked around on the forum here and didn't find anything pertaining to the Motorola VT2442.

"I have setup 2 lines just fine, everything voice wise and phone calls inbound/outbound work perfect, and tests I have run using the Voip connection says I can handle up to 9 connections at a time," davmantx explains further.

Then davmantx adds the results of our new Voip Speed Test to his post.

Turns out that davmantx got his problems solved by a Vonage Forum Member- but not by a follow-up post. Instead, as Dave expressed a preference for, that member sent him an Instant Message with the solution to this issue.

Whatever the means of communication davmantx is appreciative. In fact he says so in a follow-up post.

"I have to say a big Thanks to a new-found-friend who read my post for help here on the Vonage Forum and contacted me on AIM to resolve this matter," he writes. "After much research and time, it came down to just one thing for the solution (Resetting both the ADSL and Vonage Voice Adapter/Routers back to factory defaults).

"Thanks to my new friend and to the Vonage Community for such excellent and unique people in the WORLD!"

Well, davmantx, we like to think we are excellent and unique!

A new Vonage Forum Member named lostrouter decided to open a thread and call it, Netopia 3347W and Motorola 2442.

"If anyone has any router knowledge pleeeease help... I'm going to pull all my hair out over this one," lost router writes. "I want to get the following setup: ISP | | Netopia --- CompA | | Motorola --- CompB Netopia : 192.168.1.1 (gateway) CompA: 192.168.1.55 (static) Motorola: 192.168.1.200 (gateway/static) CompB: 192.168.1.56 (static)

Then lostrouter adds he is having trouble with the setup on the Motorola to get CompB onto a static IP that belongs to the Netopia range.

"I had this on an old Linksys router no problem, but I guess the VT2442 menus don't work the way I would think they should," he explains. "I basically want the Motorola box to be a pass-through and not try and control the subnet or anything."

Then Vonage Forum Member Steve48 follows with a post in which he recommends that lostrouter read about bridge mode in fellow Vonage Forum Member Nate Hoy's writings here.

"It's usually pretty easy to set up," Steve48 adds, "but your static IPs complicate things a bit."

What Does All That Alphabet Soup Mean?

Many Vonage Forum threads have several abbreviations. So do all those abbreviations you read about in Vonage Forum threads and elsewhere confuse you? Well, we have a handy guide to all VoIP-related abbreviations you are likely to encounter, and what they stand for. So if you see another jumble of letters that doesn't make any sense, why not hop over to our Voip Acronyms page? You can find it at http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-acronyms.html.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

In the Vonage Forum thread I just highlighted called Http Access (webpage surfing) goes down when using Phone, Vonage Forum Member davmantx got his question answered based in part on information he submitted from our Voip Speed test. As you may know, the Voip Speed Test has been upgraded recently.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen will be configured in the next day or so with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.  We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In the Blogs feature !!
