In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock, as well as the long-term outlook for the Voip market of which Vonage is now the leader by number of subscribers. We'll also go over a Vonage Forum thread on Vonage calling plans, and another one in which a Vonage Forum Member helped another Vonage Forum Member solve a voice mail bug.



In The News

Vonage Closes At $10.96 A Share

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $10.96 a share, up 15 cents from a session low of $10.81, but down 55 cents from Monday's $11.55 cents a share. Total trading volume for Vonage yesterday was 1,613,300 shares.

Survey: Voip Headed To Majority of U.S. Broadband Homes

According to a new report by research firm IDC, residential Voip service will quadruple its current subscriber base by 2010.

The report, titled U.S. Residential Voip Services 2006-2010 Forecast and Analysis: Where There Is Smoke, Is There Fire?, predicts that residential U.S. VoIP subscribers will grow from 10.3 million in 2006 to 44 million in 2010, The report says that by then, VoIP- of which Vonage is currently the largest provider by subscriber count- will be used in 62 percent of broadband homes

New Vonage Forum Member aharbour wasn't in port yet about whether he wanted a Vonage business or residential service plan. To help him decide, he started a Vonage Forum thread called Business vs. Residential Service Plans.

"I'm giving Vonage a try with a Premium Unlimited Plan and I eventually want to use it for my business. In researching this, I have been comparing the Premium Unlimited and Small Business Unlimited Plans," writes aharbour, whose actual first name is Anthony.

"After going through the Vonage website to determine the difference between the Premium Unlimited versus the Small Business Unlimited Plans, other than the free FAX line with 500 minutes of service, I did not see any difference," he writes. "Is there a difference?"

Then aharbour adds that he'd like to hear from others who have been using Vonage for their business. "My office is at home and I plan to maintain one POTS line with Verizon and eventually have up to 3 Vonage lines with a toll-free number," he explains further.

"My experience thus far with Vonage has been exceptional," aharbour adds, "and I've only noticed one instance of latency where I heard some echoing and that only occurred for a second or so."

Then Vonage Forum Member arcking sees aharbour's post and notes, "It is against the Vonage terms of service to use a residential plan for a business. That is the difference."

In his post, arcking even pastes in this information from the Vonage site:

"2.2 Residential Use of Service and Device. If you subscribe to Vonage's residential services, the Service and the Device are provided to you solely for residential use. You shall not resell or transfer the Service or the Device to another party without our prior written consent. You are prohibited from using the Service or the Device for auto-dialing, continuous or extensive call forwarding, telemarketing (including, without limitation, charitable or political solicitation or polling), fax or voicemail broadcasting or fax or voicemail blasting. We reserve the right to immediately disconnect or modify your Service if we determine, in our sole and absolute discretion, that your use of the Service or the Device is, or at any time was, inconsistent with normal residential usage patterns. In addition, you will be required to pay our higher rates for commercial service for all periods in which your use of the Service or the Device was inconsistent with normal residential use."

Aharbour follows with a note of thanks.

"I was planning on getting another adapter anyhow for the business once I made the decision to do so," he writes. "Thanks again for taking the time to post a reply."

On a Vonage Forum thread called Voicemail dial tone won't clear, new Vonage Forum Member jrtool explains his issue that led him to start this thread.

"I know the few beeps you get before the dial tone is alerting me to a new voicemail," jrtool writes. "I have deleted all voicemails and cleared all numbers in the phone but I am still getting the beeps. Very annoying."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member vidmaster follows up with the solution.

"Leave a voicemail for yourself, login and delete it, and it should clear itself," vidmaster writes.

And guess what. Vidmaster's suggestion proved a useful tool for jrtool.

"Thanks vidmaster, that worked like a charm!," jrtool wrote.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen will be configured in the next day or so with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
