Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 12, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 12, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on Vonage's stock price. We'll also go over two Vonage VoIP Forum threads about routers- one thread about hooking up the router, the other about diagnosing a now malfunctioning router that seemed to take a hit during a thunderstorm. And because this is Monday, here is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Vonage Stock News

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $11.88 a share, up nine cents from Tuesday's $11.79 a share close. That's still higher Total trading volume for Vonage Friday was 717,300 shares.

Noting that so many of those articles in the media and on the blogs say negative stuff about Vonage and their stock price, it is interesting that on those days where Vonage's stock price actually rises- the media is strangely silent. Maybe it is because everything is starting to quiet down?

Obviously though, Vonage stock is still a hot topic - one that interests Vonage investors, lawyers for at least a few of those investors, and from what I can tell by looking at our page views, lots of you on the Vonage Forum. That's a key reason why I have grouped all this news in the Vonage Stock Forum- which you can reach from this link.

Vonage's "People do Stupid Things" Ads Win Prestigious Award

On Friday Vonage announced that it has won a Bronze Effie Award from the New York American Marketing Association in the Telecom Services category for its "People Do Stupid Things" integrated marketing campaign.  "Sometimes doing stupid things has its smarts. Vonage's "People do Stupid Things" marketing campaign, which highlights some dumb things that people do, turned out to be a very intelligent brand direction for us. It educated consumers on the new Voip category, while urging consumers not to be stupid when selecting their phone service," says Mike Snyder, who is Vonage's CEO.

Created by Arnold Worldwide and MPG, the fully integrated marketing campaign, which included print, TV, online and direct advertising, began in December 2004. The TV advertising featured home video footage, touting ridiculous scenarios like children throwing baseball bats through home windows, photographers falling into fountains while snapping their photos and a skier using his roof as his slope, and winding up on top of a truck. Vonage compared these actions to paying too much for traditional phone service in efforts to convince people switch to Vonage.

Speaking of, if you want to watch Vonage's tv ads right here, right now on your computer, we have them archived at http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum13.html. Browse the list, click on a link for an ad you would like to watch, and the ad will start playing!

 On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new thread called Technically Challenged Needs Help To Connect 2 VT2442's, Vonage Forum Mamba doesn't dance around the issue.

"I'm a bulb short of a full string so I need help,: Mamba writes. "I have two VT 2442 devices. I have two separate Vonage numbers. I have one cable modem--Linksys cable modem and a Belkin wireless router. One computer is hardwired and the other is wireless. I need to hook up both VT 2442's to this one cable modem and wireless router. "

Then Mamba adds this summary: one line works perfect, while the other line has dial tone but drops every other word.

In less than two hours, outerfire joins Mamba's thread with a post citing several possible causes and solutions.

"There are a few thoughts, configurations, and probably problems that there may be," outerfire suggests. "One idea may be to try to have Vonage move one number over to be with the other one, but perhaps you wish to keep them separated. "

Then outerfire suggests that Mamba try this configuration, Cable Modem --> Belkin wireless --> 2 VT 2442's

"If you confirm what setup method you've tried, then it's probably a configuration issue," outerfire points out. "And there are several possibilities there."

In this new thread Vonage Forum Member Steve68 began over the weekend named RTP300 just keeps rebooting.. over and over, new Vonage Forum Member steve68 describes the problem that motivated him to start the thread.

"We had a big storm last night with lots of lightning and this morning no dial tone. I check out the router and it appears to be rebooting over and over continuously. I get blinking power, then all the ports flash then solid power with no other lights.. wait about 5 seconds then it repeats," he writes. :It will not stop and I cannot login to the admin interface because it reboots while authenticating.

Next, after indicating his search results, Steve68 adds that everything is plugged into a surge strip and the modem and everything else works fine.

"Also I have tried hard reset and unplugging everything and rebooting. Still get the same results," he points out. "Is my RTP300 fried?"

Who better to answer a post from a Vonage Forum Member named Steve68 than another Steve with a number as part of his user name? That would be Steve48.

"My guess is that it is, indeed, fried. You've done the right things without good results," Steve48 writes. "I think the next thing is a call to customer service."

After doing so, Steve68 follows up with a post indicating that Vonage will send him a new router. Steve48 then asks Steve68 to keep us all informed about how he does with the new router.

Well, it is Monday, time for our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. Another great week for reebok. He even was around over the weekend, helping some Vonage Forum Members with answers they were hoping to get. Look, you can get Member of the Week without going online on nice summer weekends, but I thought I would recognize our most frequent poster, reebok for doing so. That being the case, congratulations reebok on another Vonage Forum Member of the Week selection. To browse through a list of some of reebok's more recent posts, click here.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test. It's been getting a lot of comments, not only here on the Vonage Forum but on DSL Reports as well. Here's the link to the thread on DSL Reports where lots of their members (and me, as well) have been posting about the test.

OK, I guess I should get to the test itself.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen will be configured in the next day or so with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today.  We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
