Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

First, I have a couple of announcements. On Saturday, we passed 28,000 members here on the Vonage Forum. Our newest member is cher513. Welcome cher513. We look forward to reading your posts!

By the way, we picked up 150 new Members on Sunday. That's our third-highest one day pickup in history, as well as our biggest pickup on a weekend. Given that not everyone is around a PC on Sunday to sign up, that's impressive!

I think lots of folks joined because of our new Vonage Speed Test. You'll find details below, right below our Vonage Forum post highlights.

In the news, we'll look at Vonage's rising stock price, Vonage's sponsorship of the World Cup broadcasts in the U.S., as well as a news about a newly appointed Vonage senior executive. We'll also go over a Vonage Voip Forum thread about audio quality of some Vonage calls, and about equipment recommendations for using Vonage over Wi-Fi. And we'll also tell you about our new Voip Speed Test- a test in which our most frequent posters- and the ones who have helped so many of you with their informative answers- helped me to get ready for launch. Finally, this being Monday we'll meet our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage Shares Rise On New York Stock Exchange

To read all these press accounts, blogs, and even a handful of posts here criticizing Vonage stock, it is interesting to note that on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $11.98 a share. That's 35 cents higher than Thursday's price, which was $11.63 a share. Total trading volume for Vonage Friday was 2,140,700 shares. Because the volume of shares traded was far lower than any other of the seven trading days Vonage has been traded on the New York Stock Exchange, it could be that investors are calming down and are resolving to be in this for the long haul.

Obviously though, this is still a hot topic - one that interests Vonage investors, lawyers for at least a few of those investors, and from what I can tell by looking at our page views, lots of you on the Vonage Forum. That's a key reason why I have grouped all this news in the Vonage Stock Forum- which can be reached from this link.

Vonage To Be A World Cup Sponsor

Vonage announced has it has secured English broadcast sponsorship rights for the FIFA World Cup 2006 Germany, appearing on ABC Sports and ESPN. Soccer fans will see "brought to you by Vonage" while viewing the tournament.

"Vonage is excited to be sponsoring the biggest soccer tournament in the world's #1 sport, which, according to FIFA, over the last decade has become the fastest growing team sport in the United States," says Vonage CEO Mike Snyder. "Vonage will be reaching not only to the growing U.S. soccer fan base, but also a broad multicultural audience."

Vonage Recruits a "Star" from "OnStar"

Vonage has also announced that Bryan DiGiorgio has been appointed Senior Vice President of its Customer Care operation.
Bryan DiGiorgio comes to Vonage from OnStar Inc., where he served as general director of service delivery operations since 2002. Among other responsibilities, DiGiorgio directed OnStar's customer service, technical support and direct sales operations in the U.S. and Canada. He also developed the company's strategic plans for global service delivery operations in the U.S. and Canada.

"We're very excited that Bryan has agreed to join the Vonage team," says Vonage's CEO Mike Snyder. "His expertise in building customer care operations will make Bryan an invaluable member of our team."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member slbige posts a new thread which he's named Loss Of Audio / Clicking Noises.

"On days we are having problems, people I am talking to tell me that it sounds like the audio from me sounds choppy and broken up, sometimes it drops audio completely even though I can hear them fine," he writes. "Other times, I have heard a "clicking" type noise and occasionally the person I am talking to will drop off for a few seconds and then return.

"The bulk of the time the problem is the first issue, me dropping off."

Then slbige posts the results of his testyourvoip.com test.

Reebok, who has logged more posts than any of our 28,000+ Vonage Forum Members, notices slbige's plight and posts a response.

"Your connection is less than ideal, particularly 'from you to Boston' which would represent your voice talking to the other person, which is consistent with your primary problem," writes reebok. "Unfortunately these issues are sometimes hard to resolve, unless you happen to be running some high bandwidth program like BitTorrent or some other p2p software. have you noticed any more or less problems on the phone when the computer is turned off? That would be one way to test if something on your computer is causing the issue. and if so, there are ways to fix that.

"Aside from that however, you're pretty much looking at begging Comcast to make your connection a little better," reebok adds. "Just tell them you have slow browsing or something. If you can access your cable modem interface (i.e. http://192.168.100.1) which it doesn't look like you can from glancing at the manual, post the signal values."

"We do have several computer running on this network. I am not aware of any p2p or BitTorrent programs running but I do know their computers are always on," slbige adds. "I'll try leaving them off to see how my phone service reacts, and then I'll post an update."

Vonage with WiFi, which crossover cable to use? is a post started by Vonage Forum Member anu73.

"I want to use Vonage with Wi-Fi. I found the best way to do it by not having to purchase costly Linksys or other brand wireless bridge," writes anu73, who wants to know if he should buy either Belkin Category 6 Networking Cable (A3L980V07S) - at Circuit City or Belkin CAT-5e UTP Crossover Cable, Yellow, 3 feet, RJ-45 Male to RJ-45 MaleMfg Part #: A3X126-03-YLW-M at CompUSA.

Vonage Forum Member Yaztromo has some ideas, which he writes as a follow-up to anu73's thread-opening post.

"I'm not convinced you need a cross-over cable. Most routers have an 'uplink' port, which is automatically crossed over without the need for a special cable," writes Yaztromo. "Besides which, most newer PC Ethernet chipsets have automatic RX/TX line detection, and can handle the crossover automatically.

"However, if you've convinced yourself you need a crossover cable to make this work, both of the cables you listed are equivalent for this application," Yaztromo adds. "Cat6 cable has slightly more shielding than Cat5e, but both are rated for handling 1000Mb/s Ethernet, which is probably faster than what your router can handle anyhow."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test. It's been getting a lot of comments, not only here on the Vonage Forum but on DSL Reports as well. Here's the link to the thread on DSL Reports where lots of their members (and me, as well) have been posting about the test.

OK, I guess I should get to the test itself.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen will be configured in the next day or so with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
