Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll talk about the big story of the day- the fact that Vonage stock starts being publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange today. We'll also go over a couple of Vonage Voip Forum threads about router issues- always a popular topic here.

In The News

Vonage Shares Go On Sale Today

Vonage raised more than $531.3 million yesterday in an Initial Public Offering where Vonage stock was priced at $17 a share. 

Vonage trading starts today on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "VG."

The IPO price was $17 yesterday, and at this point, it appears that lots of Vonage users eligible to participate in the IPO by means of the Directed Share Program did so yesterday.

The reason I know this is that on our Vonage Stock Forum (which is open to registered Vonage Forum Members only), a thread entitled POST Your allocation!! has received well over 50 posts and more than 1,300 page views. It seems as though many posters on this thread were allocated the opportunity to buy between one-fourth and one-third the number of shares they had requested to buy under the Directed Share Program. 

So one way of looking at that fact is that demand was strong among those who know Vonage the best- the folks who use Vonage regularly and with their strong faith in Vonage, have literally put their money where their mouth is.

As I have said before, I happen to be one of those people. I'm "in."

And judging from what I can see here, I have plenty of company.

Plenty of those who get paid to follow events such as the Vonage IPO would tend to agree. As we reported here yesterday, interest in the IPO appears strong, according to analyst James DeStefano of Renaissance Capital, which tracks IPOs.

"It's coming at a pretty attractive valuation ... people are attracted to growth," DeStefano said.

DeStefano said the allocation of shares to customer was more likely a goodwill gesture by Vonage, which he believes, shouldn't have a problem selling its shares through traditional channels.

Gary Arlen, a telecommunications industry analyst in Bethesda, Md., told the San Francisco Chronicle that while Vonage has challenges, it has the advantage of name recognition and pioneer status in the rapidly evolving market for Internet phone service.

"Vonage is the poster child for (Internet calling),'' Arlen said.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Linksys RT31P2 Phone adaptor / router combination, Vonage Forum Member jim28277 poses a question about a topic we see come up on the Forum from time to time.

"My current set up is cable modem to Linksys RT31P2 to VTech 5.8mhz phone system," he writes. "I run my computer directly off one of the three Linksys RT31P2 ethernet connections." 

Then jim28277 adds that although he has always been told that using the Linksys’ phone adaptor / router combination ensured that my Vonage connection always got the bandwidth it required and what was left went to the computer, he recently has read a lot of posters that advise using a stand alone router in front of the Linksys RT31P2. 

"In their setups, they connect the Linksys RT31P2 to one stand alone router’s ethernet port and they connect their computer to another ethernet port on the stand alone router," he explains of the post he has read that describe this approach. "They do not use the ethernet ports on the RT31p2 unit. Their belief is that the external stand alone router works better than the router built into the RT31p2 unit." 

That poses a question in him28277's mind that he would like some feedback and advice about.

"Intuitively, I agree but what about voice priority over data that seems to be a feature of the Linksys RT31P2 unit? Can anyone clear this up and offer some advice," he asks. "I’ve been using Vonage for more than a year without many real problems but recently I've experienced some problems that seem to stem back to Linksys RT31P2 unit."

First up is reebok, who just happens to be the Vonage Forum Member with the most posts of all. We're talking more than 3,000 posts and counting.

"Because the routers we're talking about have a QoS (quality of service) feature, you can tell the router what device (the rt31p2 in your case) to give traffic priority to," writes reebok, who adds that some people go with the Hawking device which effectively does the same without having to buy a new router." 

Reebok then ends his post with a link to a thread about that router. The thread is entitled Hawking Technology Broadband Voip QoS Booster. 

On a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Linksys Router vs. Vonage (VTech) broadband phone, new Vonage Forum Member voipuserMN poses his question.

"How do I access/configure my system to work?" he asks. "I have a Linksys Router (WRT54GC Wireless-G router) connected to my cable router. I then have my VTech broadband phone plugged into one of the ports in the Linksys Router. Do I need to set up port forward? If you which ones do I need to do?"

And it seems that bringing up this issue is causing voipuserMN to wonder whether this is why he can't access the VTech broadband phone base unit with the address He adds his address for the Linksys Router is

Current Vonage Forum Member of the Week Steve48 sees this post and then follows up with his own post containing advice for voipuserMN.

"You shouldn't have to forward any ports," Steve48, whose real name is Steve Gray, writes to voipuserMN. "As for accessing the phone base, you normally would have to plug the computer into the base. I assume that's the case here."
