Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 23, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll get the latest on the Vonage IPO, when it officially kicks off, and what a leading analyst thinks. We'll also go over Vonage Voip Forum threads about adapter power losses and uneven Vonage call quality.

In The News

Vonage IPO Today: Analyst Upbeat

Vonage is expected to sell 31.25 million shares in its initial public offering, with trading to start tomorrow on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "VG."

The company expects to get $16 to $18 per share, an estimate it reaffirmed in a regulatory filing yesterday. The actual price could fall outside the estimated range depending on demand.

Interest in the IPO appears strong, according to analyst James DeStefano of Renaissance Capital, which tracks IPOs.

"It's coming at a pretty attractive valuation ... people are attracted to growth," DeStefano said.

DeStefano said the allocation of shares to customer was more likely a goodwill gesture by Vonage, which he believes, shouldn't have a problem selling its shares through traditional channels.

Keep in mind that registered Vonage Forum users can read and post on our new Vonage Stock Forum. Here's the link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Random Power Loss PAP2, new Vonage Forum Member trickeyone asks a question that is, well, a "tricky one."

"My PAP2 randomly shuts down. I lose all the lights," trickeyone writes. "I unplug and plug it back in and everything works fine. Any ideas?"

Well, when it comes to ideas, Steve48 has lots of them. Not surprising, considering Steve's our Vonage Forum Member of the Week once again.

"If all the lights are going out, I would guess that the PAP2 is on its last legs," Steve48 writes. "However, it could be a temperature issue."

Then Steve48 suggests to trickeyone that he place the PAP2 as far away from other heat generators as he can, with as much air flow around it as possible, and see if it gets better.

Connie may be based in Fort Knox, Ky., but this new Vonage Forum Member's Vonage connection is far from golden. was having some bad Vonage connection problems. That's why Connie decided to start a thread that has been named, Outgoing calls are garbled and intermittent cut outs as well.

"Outgoing calls so garbled it is unusable," Connie writes. "Vonage has had me connect the routers in all kinds of configurations with no luck." Connie then adds the result of her testyourvoip post (more about that below).

It's Connie's luck that answers have come from the two of the 27,000-plus Vonage Forum Members with the most posts here on the Forum- and, the two most recent Vonage Forum Member of the Week honorees. That would be reebok and  Steve48.

"You have one of the worst connections ever," reebok tells Connie. "You need to call (Connie's broadband cable provider) and tell them you're having slow Internet and all kinds of problems loading web pages, etc.  With those speeds and pings, you might as well have dialup."

Well, reebok called it straight, and so does Steve48.

"Agreed. But to be absolutely certain that the Vonage equipment is not at fault, plug your computer directly into the modem and repeat your Voip and speed tests," Steve48 writes. "If things improve dramatically, then you need to check out your two routers.

"Otherwise jack up your ISP as Reebok said," adds Steve48.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read in our review of the new Vonage Forum thread named Outgoing calls are garbled and intermittent cut outs as well, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. That thread is an example. Steve48 and reebok saw this info and were able to respond. As what happened in this instance, the best way for your fellow Vonage Forum members to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum1.html.

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes. And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. With the Vonage IPO, it should be a very exciting day!!
