Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 18, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll find out when Vonage stock goes on sale, and also check in on the famous Andretti father-son race car team that will be carrying the Vonage banner at the Indy 500. We'll also go over a Vonage Voip Forum thread about recommendations for phones to use with the Vonage service, as well as an interesting thread from a Vonage user who seems to have difficulty calling a local radio station from his Vonage line.

In The News

Vonage Stock To Go On Sale Next Tuesday

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Vonage has listed the expected offering date for the IPO as May 23. That will also be the date where shares in the Vonage Directed Shares Program will also be placed on sale for certain Vonage customers.

Vonage plans to issue about 31.25 million shares, priced at $16-$18 each, through the IPO. Another 4.7 million shares would be set aside for underwriters’ over allotments, making the total proceeds from the offering $575 million-$647 million.

Citigroup, Deutsche Bank Securities, UBS Investment Bank, Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc., Piper Jaffray & Co. and Thomas Weisel Partners LLC are serving as underwriters for the offering.

On Monday we'll devote much of the Digest to another look at the Directed Share Program.

Vonage's Andretti's Warm Up For Indy 500

The two drivers in the Vonage-co sponsored #1 Jim Beam/Vonage Dallara/Honda/Firestone racecar had a practice run yesterday in preparation for the Indy 500 on Memorial Day,

Michael Andretti finished 17th with an average 220.822 mph, and his son Marco Andretti finished 18th, averaging 220.470 mph.

"We're not where we want to be right now, but we're still working, trying to get it where we want it," Michael Andretti said after the run. "We just wish we could have finished the day out. I hope the weather will cooperate with us tomorrow."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread called Recommendation or warnings for proper phone? new Vonage Forum Member AshesRisin asks a basic question.

"I am brand-new to Vonage and have not received modem yet. I need to purchase a phone ASAP for my new business," he writes. "The Uniden phone looks perfect with the base and one wireless. Unfortunately I cannot get anyone in customer service or billing to respond and allow me to buy it with the rebate since I already enrolled."

Less than a half-hour after AshesRisin opened up the thread with the post I just cited from, VonageTPA, one of our most experienced Members, joins the thread to lend his expertise.

"You're better off with a regular Vonage adapter rather than the all-in-one phone/adapter combos that are out there," VonageTPA advises AshesRisin. "This way you can connect up different phones, fax machines, teleconferencers, etc. Also, if your adapter goes belly-up, the regular adapters are easy to come across in a hurry."

Then VonageTPA makes an important point that everyone- including me- knows full well.

"When you're running a business," he writes, "you don't have the luxury of waiting for a few days for a replacement adapter to arrive."

Then as far as his specific phone recommendations, VonageTPA suggests Uniden TRU8xxx series for cordless phones, and Aastra 9417CW/9120/470/480e for hardwired phones.

Now here's an interesting post on a topic I don't think we've ever discussed here in the Vonage Forum.

On a new Vonage Forum thread called outgoing call to radio station- rings once then busy, Vonage Forum Member bg4 writes, "Strange behavior when I call this radio station during times when they are receiving calls and I am pretty sure I can call it and get through at other times. It could be a contest but it is a call-in show to sell items and many people call in at once and line is busy most of time.

Then bg4 adds that when he gets his Vonage line to ring it goes to busy after one ring.

"Doubt there is a solution (If it does that when you do that dont do that) but any ideas why it is happening?," he asks.

Well, two of the first answers came from Vonage Forum Members Picsman and once again, VonageTPA.

"Are you calling a "toll-free' number? Could be that your exchange (the fourth through sixth digit of your ten digit 'phone number) is recognized as an out of area call," Picsman writes. "Out of area calls may be blocked by the station.

Then Picsman added that he called a vendor on his my locally registered Vonage line. The vendor provides support during specific hours based upon the calling location. The recording said "call back during business hours." But then he  called on my POTS line and got through.

"I'm not sure if incoming calls which are not on a toll-free number can be blocked," Picsman adds.

Up steps VonageTPA.

"Another explanation is that the Vonage adapter is generating the ring tone while it's trying to connect the call...then pushes the call through and that's when you hear the busy signal," VonageTPA writes. "I've seen my adapter do this before, also seen it do something similar when calling international #'s and I'll hear a US-style ringtone first, then the Euro ringtone."
