Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 17, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, some interesting news. Yesterday morning, I noticed that on Tuesday we had picked up 73 new Vonage Forum Members. I thought that might be a one-day record, so I checked, and yes, it was!

In the news, we'll catch up on some scattered incoming call glitches Vonage was experiencing this morning. We'll also go over Vonage Voip Forum threads on Vonage-related port issues, as well as on using an answering machine instead of Vonage voice mail.

In The News

Vonage Experiences Some Incoming Call Glitches

On Thursday morning, Vonage put up a note that we saw and added to the Vonage Service Status box that appears on the left side of our main Vonage Forum Pages.

The note read:

"At this time some customers in certain area codes are experiencing intermittent issues receiving incoming calls. Our engineers are aware of the issue and are working towards resolving it as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience in this matter and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

Keep in mind that on the Vonage Forum, you will only see this note if you are a Vonage Forum Member. So if you are "just visiting", why not register and join us? Not only is registration and membership free, but you will be able to post here on the Forum.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called How stuff works?, new Vonage Forum Member vovikg asks an interesting question.

"I have successfully used Vonage MTA behind D-Link DI-614+ router with NAT which blocks all incoming TCP/UDP ports," he writes. "My soft phone also works fine. Shouldn't blocked ports cause problems when receiving calls? The router has UPnP enabled, is it how it works?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member blakadher gets right back to vovikg.

"Unless you specifically block a port, it's open. Since the Vonage TA is initiating the connection to the Vonage server (for registration), NAT takes care of getting the inbound calls to it," blakadher explains. "Therefore, you don't have to specifically forward ports to the Vonage TA.

"Port forwarding is only required when an unsolicited external connection is attempted," he adds.

Then early this morning, Vonage Forum Member paul248 added a post with a link to a Wikipedia article with more info about what vovikg has been asking about.

"They (Vonage) probably use this technique, among other things:

Rather than use Vonage's voice mail, new Vonage Forum Member todd2000 wants to use an answering machine with Vonage service. But since he wanted to know if this was practical and possible, he's begun a Vonage Forum thread that he named, Answering Machine Problems??

"So my Vonage adapter is going to be delivered on Wed, and I have a quick question before I hook it up, for various reasons we want to use our own answering machine, and not Vonage voicemail," todd2000 writes. "I did a quick search and found some old threads from 2003, saying there were problems with answering machines not disconnecting after a caller hung up etc... because the adapter wasn't sending them the right signals or something."

"Do answering machines work better with the newer adapters?," todd2000 asks, adding that he has an old AT&T 1710 answering machine and wondering if this machine will work with Vonage- and if not what answering machine might.

Vonage Forum Member ram1220 is not "sheepish" about following up with a new post about his own answering machine experiences.

"I am using a Uniden CDT648-2 2.4ghz cordless phone system with a built in digital answering machine. My Vonage adapter is the Motorola VT2442," he writes. "I use my answering machine all the time and I have no problem with it at all with the Vonage system.

"I have voice mail turned off in the Vonage settings," ram1220 says, adding that  his only gripe is that call volume with the VT2442 is too loud and he gets some distorted voices in a call even though  he has the volume turned all the way down on his phone.

What Does All That Alphabet Soup Mean?

How stuff works?, the first thread we went over today, sure had several abbreviations! So do all those abbreviations you read about in Vonage Forum threads and elsewhere confuse you? Well, we have a handy guide to all VoIP-related abbreviations you are likely to encounter, and what they stand for. So if you see another jumble of letters that doesn't make any sense, why not hop over to our Voip Acronyms page? You can find it at

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning.
