Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 16, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up yet again on Vonage and the NSA controversy, and find out where you Vonage Forum Members have been expressing your opinions on the issue.  We'll also go over Vonage Voip Forum threads on router setup and on finding a multifunction fax machine that will work well with Vonage. And finally, we'll run our first-ever list of all Vonage Forum threads with at least 5,000 views and with a new post in the last 30 days.

In The News

Vonage Forum Members Discuss NSA Controversy

Vonage said yesterday it has averaged about two privacy-related inquiries a day since the story broke about the National Security Agency asking several large traditional phone companies for the calling records of its customers. A Vonage spokeswoman said those inquiries are more frequent than normal but  are still negligible when considering the company's 1.7 million subscriber lines

Vonage said again it was not contacted by the NSA and does not provide customer records without a subpoena.

That issue, though, has been gaining major traction with Vonage customers. The thread is called Did Vonage give NSA our phone records?. I've just linked to it. Lots of perspective. The opinions expressed are lively, occasionally pointed, and are pretty far from a consensus. I just checked, and there are some 75 posts, and the thread has been read more than 2,000 times. I see where some bloggers have been picking up on this thread as well, quoting Vonage Forum Members with different opinions on this whole issue.

As I said yesterday, and do so again now, you should check this thread out. If you have your own opinions, then by all means jump in and add them. This will be a hot topic that won't go away for awhile.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member drjvolpe wants to make sure that when he buys a new multifunction printer, scanner and fax, that the  fax works well with his Vonage service. His interest in the subject led drjvolpe to open a thread that he entitles, Multifunction machines that work with Voip fax.

"I need to buy a multifunction machine with a fax system that is compatible with Voip faxing," drjvolpe explains. He asks about Canon, but sounds open to other model recommendations.

VonageTPA is first to reply with a suggestion.

"I have a Canon MP780 (~18 months & still going strong) and love it. GREAT fax machine, even better printer," he writes. "I did have a problem with a 100 page fax, but people fortunately don't seem to do these all that much anymore (PDF files rule). Otherwise, the fax performance has been flawless.

"I'm using a Vonage RTP300, not sure if it makes a difference or not," VonageTPA adds. I've even seen a few 33.6K fax connects with it.

On a new Vonage Forum thread named How to configure DLink 634M router, new Vonage Forum Member marvallen asks his question.

"I just installed the DI 634M DLink router and want to maximize its performance with Vonage," writes marvallen. "I called DLink tech support and they said no configuration is necessary. Can this be true?"

Vonage Forum Member of the Week reebok is the first to respond. He suggests that marvallen check out two resources: the DLink manual at, and a Vonage Forum thread at this address:

Presenting: The Vonage Forum's Greatest Hits

When I say "greatest hits," I mean that literally.

Early this morning about 7 a.m., I thought I would go through all the Vonage Forum threads with at least one new post in the last 30 days, and then list all of them with at least 5,000 views- or "hits," if you prefer. I did this because it stands to reason that the more times you Members and even site visitors click on a thread, the more you are interested in it. And if you have added at least one post in the last 30 days, that also shows the thread is about a topic of current interest.

There's 10 threads that meet that description.

So here's the list of our ten most read-threads, with a link and read count for each:
