In the news, we'll catch up once again on Vonage and the NSA controversy, and find out where you Vonage Forum Members have been expressing your opinions on the issue. We'll learn about a real good night on Saturday night for a race car team co-sponsored by Vonage.  We'll also go over Vonage Voip Forum threads on phone port issues and dial tone problems. And because this is Monday, we'll meet our newest Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage Forum Members Discuss NSA Controversy

In Friday's Digest we reported that In light of the news that some phone companies have been supplying calling records of its customers to government agencies, Vonage said they do not do so without a court order. "Our position on this issue as it relates to Vonage is pretty clear. We don't supply any government authority with call record data or any sensitive customer information without a subpoena, "a Vonage spokeswoman told USA Today.

That issue, though, has been gaining major traction with Vonage customers. The thread is called Did Vonage give NSA our phone records?. I've just linked to it. Lots of perspective. The opinions expressed are lively, occasionally pointed, and are pretty far from a consensus. 

Check this thread out, and if you have your own opinions, then by all means jump in and add them. This will be a hot topic that won't go away for awhile.

Vonage Co-Sponsored Race Car Finishes Strong Second

Ryan Dalziel and Alex Figge delivered Pacific Coast Motorsports' first ever Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series podium finish with the team driving the #89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Pontiac Riley finishing in second place in Saturday night's seventh round, 'The GAINSCO Grand Prix' at the Phoenix International Raceway.

"The car was running great when Alex handed it over," Ryan Dalziel tells  "I thought it was going to be one of those nights again when we lost a cylinder and had the 'drive-through' penalty. There were so many things that went against us during the race but we've been fast out there pretty much all season so this is definitely a finish that the team deserves!""

"At the start it was pretty slippery and we were all bunched up quite a bit. I made some mistakes in traffic but I also made some good moves so I thought I handed the car over to Ryan in respectable position," his teammate Alex Figge adds. "He (Ryan) then did a great job finishing it off. We've had some speed this year in the car but on a couple of occasions it just hasn't panned out for whatever reason. Tonight it did and it was a fantastic effort by everyone concerned!"

New Vonage Forum Member XxMaverick has opened a thread called Phone Problem and ports.

"Whenever I open up a set or ports for example-6100-6112 (you would) think that it would have a effect on the quality of my phone calls. my friend keeps complaining by me having my ports open to my ip address it affects the quality she says sometimes the person she is talking to cannot hear a word and this happens every now and then," writes XxMaverick, who adds that he has a  Linksys RT31P2 router......

"Having ports should not have any impact on the quality of the call," Vonage Forum Member butterman writes.

"The best thing you can do to minimize it is some sort of QoS, either on the router itself to give the Vonage device a higher priority or a separate device like the Hawking Broadband Booster," he writes. "I could see having the ports blocked might cause an issue, but I can't think of anything that would make the call worse, just because the ports are open on the router."

Then butterman adds that he also recommends running through the steps that are noted in the top of this thread to see if you can gather some other diagnostic information. The testyourvoip is a nice indicator to see how your connection and call quality would be in general.

While New Vonage Forum Member sirwreck doesn't sound like "a wreck" because he cannot get a dialtone on his Vonage service, he's interested enough to solve the problem that he's begun a thread which he named, No dial tone - - - any suggestions.

"I am getting no dial tone. My Internet connection is fine," writes sirwreck, who adds that  he has tried to cycle all the equipment- which is what Vonage tech support told him to do. Then sirwreck adds his testyourvoip results to his post-just like butterman advised XxMaverick to do.

Vonage Forum Member reebok- who we will be hearing more about in just a second-sees sirwreck's post and offers this advice.

"Just for kicks you can try powering down the cable modem and (Linksys) rt31p2 for a few minutes, then powering on the cable modem, then the rt31p2 a minute later (with the rt31p2 hooked directly to the cable modem)," reebok suggests to sirwreck.

Oh, yes, about reebok... here goes...

Reebok Cracks 3,000 Posts!

You know, reebok has been with us here on the Vonage Forum since October 24, 2004- just a little over a year and a half. He's always been enthusiastic lending his expertise and opinions to as wide a range of questions that you could imagine of relevance to the Forum.

Not only did he have another one of his very helpful weeks- but over the weekend, I noticed that reebok passed 3,000 posts. That's alot. To give you perspective, no other Vonage Forum Member, including myself, has even reached 2,000 yet. At the rate they are going, Steve48 (joined in August, 2005) and NateHoy (joined in November, 2005 will surely reach 2,000 posts- and 3,000 eventually. And yes, reebok got a head start, but look at it this way. He's stuck with it, and has remained one our prolific, "go-to" members from the day he joined.

 What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

As you just read in the two threads we selected for a look-at today, both threads involved either a suggestion to post testyourvoip results, or an actual posting of those results. 

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."
