Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - May 11, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 11, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll check in on Vonage's ratings as the #1 Internet advertiser, and look in on a Vonage co-sponsored racing team that would like to be #1 as well. We'll also look at  two Vonage Forum threads, one about connectivity problems, the other about Vonage Caller I.D.

In The News

Vonage Heads The Internet Ad Pack

According to figures compiled by Nielsen//NetRatings AdRelevance, Vonage remained the leading Internet advertiser during the last week in April.

The research firm gets these numbers by lining up the number of times Vonage ads appear on web sites (not including Vonage) with estimates of how many page views each of those sites get where Vonage ads appear. Using this statistic, Nielsen//NetRatings AdRelevance then come up with a statistic called "impressions."

For the week ending April 30, Vonage led with more than 4.4 billion impressions, followed closely by a company called GUS plc, a U.K.-based online retailer. Only one other communications provider was in the top ten- United Online (NetZero).

Vonage Co-Sponsored Michael Andretti Warms Up For Indy 500

Michael Andretti, is lead driver for the Vonage co-sponsored #1 Jim Beam/Vonage Dallara/Honda/Firestone car.

The #1 will race in the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day.

Andretti had some comments after yesterday's practice run.

"We're getting a little better. We're still not where we want to be," he said. But, the way this place is, you've just got to claw your way back into it and we're trying. We're just trying to find more speed. I think the Jim Beam/Vonage car is a really good race car. I think we're going to be very strong in the race.

"We're just trying to get it in the front of the field," added Michael Andretti, son of the famous Mario Andretti. "We want to start in the top 11. That's the goal."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Modem > RT31PT > Wireless G = No Web, new Vonage Forum Member ravikharnal describes his situation related to his Vonage service and lack of Internet access.

He writes that even after registering his new MAC address, the only way he could get his Phone 1 to light up and get a dial tone was by having a RoadRunner Cable Modem > RT31PT > Wireless G setup.

"Unfortunately, when I plugged my Wireless G into the RT31PT, I could not access the internet and I remembered this is exactly what happen a few years ago when I first got Vonage which is why i had the wireless first," he writes.

Then ravikharnal adds that he has tried all the basics including power cycling and release renew, but although his ipconfig showed that the router was giving me an ip address he could not access any websites.

Then, he added that he tried putting the configuration back to

RoadRunner Cable Modem > Wireless G > RT31PT and he did get on the Internet but with no Phone Light.

New Vonage Forum Member Yaztromo posts a detailed solution.

"Are you using NAT on both the RT31PT and the Wireless G? If so, you should only have it enabled on the device closest to the modem (by cable path, that is, and not by which one is physically closest to the modem! ), with it disabled on the other device (or with the second device acting as a DHCP Relay)," he writes.

"Chances are you're using Network Address Translation on both devices, with both devices potentially attempting to hand out addresses within the same sub-net (i.e.: 10.x.x.x, or 192.168.x.x), he tells ravikharnal. "Your problem is probably completely one of routing.

Then,Yaztromo offers his suggestion:

"Here's what you should do. Have the first device act as your NAT device. Your second device (your Wireless G router) should have its NAT disabled, and should be given a static address within the address space created by your first device (the RT31PT), with the address of the RT31PT specified as the second devices gateway," he suggests.

Yaztromo follows with a description of how his setup works for him.

"I'm running a similar setup, but with the Linksys RTP300, an Apple AirPort Extreme, a Linksys BEFSR41, a Linksys 5-port hub, and an Apple Airport Express (in other words, my network is significantly more complex than your network ). The RTP300 handles all NAT transactions -- connections into either the Airport Extreme (WiFi) or the BEFSR41 (wired) are simply routed through to the RTP300," Yaztromo explains. "Neither of these secondary devices has DHCP enabled, and neither provide any NAT services (that is, they don't do any address translation).

Yaztromo adds that the Airport Extreme has a static address within his network's single address space, and has the "Distribute Addresses" option disabled (which turns off DHCP and NAT). The BEFSR41 has a setting for "Working Mode" which is set to "Router" (with the default being "Gateway"), and DHCP set to "Disable."

New Vonage Forum Member rickstone has a question that he has turned into a thread titled Caller ID Block.

"I know I can use Caller ID Block to block caller ID information for individual outgoing calls," rickstone writes. "Is it possible to have my line set so that ALL calls automatically are blocked, without my having to punch in *67 for every call?"

Coming right up with a post that contains the answer is VonageTPA- our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Nope, Vonage doesn't support this, probably because some states won't allow it," writes VonageTPA in his answer to rickstone's question.

A Reminder About Our Vonage IPO Thread

Vonage's IPO, and the Directed Share Program offering some Vonage customers the opportunity to buy Vonage stock when the IPO officially hits, has been generating a lot of interest here on the Vonage Forum as well as elsewhere. If you want to express an opinion or even just read what other Vonage Forum Members are saying about this offer, just hop over to our thread about the issue. The thread is called The Vonage IPO Thread.

Additionally, the Tuesday edition of the Digest had a detailed look at the Directed Share Program. Here's the link to that Digest issue.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
