Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - May 10, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 10, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, some good news. Yesterday at about 10:15 a.m. Eastern Time, we picked up our 22 millionth page view since we started the Vonage Forum back in March, 2003. It took us less than three weeks to go from 21 to 22 million. Let's shoot for 23 million!

In the news, we'll read the text of a voice mail and email Vonage has sent many of its customers about its Directed Share Program offering of an opportunity to buy Vonage common stock.  We'll also look at  two Vonage Forum threads, one about router reconfiguration and how it solved some call problems, the other about router configuration options.

In The News

Vonage Sends Out E-mails, Voice Mails to Customers about Directed Share Program

Yesterday, Vonage sent our emails and voice mails to many of its customers about its Directed Share Program offering of common stock.

"For Vonage, which is in a government-mandated quiet period prior to its offering, the customer-share program is likely a bid to garner loyal, long-term investors, says David Menlo, president of IPOfinancial.com.

Here's the text of the voice mail:

"Valued Vonage customer, as you may know Vonage has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission related to its proposed Initial Public Offering- often called an IPO- of common stock. Because much of our success is attributable to our customers, we have asked the underwriters of the IPO to reserve shares of common stock for sale to certain Vonage customers at the IPO price in a Directed Share Program.

"You may be eligible to participate in the Directed Share Program if you meet certain eligibility requirements, including having been a Vonage customer from December 15, 2005 through February 1, 2006. You do not need to continue to be a Vonage customer in order to participate. Further information about the terms and conditions of the Directed Share Program, including the eligibility requirements, and the process for participating in the Program are available in our Registration Statement and on the following Website: www.vonageipo.com. That's www.V-O-N-A-G-ipo.com

"Thank you,

"Vonage.

"A Registration Statement relating to our Common Stock has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission but has not yet become effective. The Common Stock may not be sold, nor offers to buy be accepted prior to the time the Registration Statement becomes effective.

"Again, the website is www.vonageipo.com. That's www.V-O-N-A-G-E.com

The email message was very similar:

"Dear Valued Vonage Customer,

"As you may know, Vonage has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) related to its proposed initial public offering (IPO) of common stock.

Further information about the terms and conditions of the Directed Share Program, including the eligibility requirements and the process for participating in the program, are available in our registration statement and at the following website:

"Thank you,

"Vonage

"Vonage Holdings Corp. has filed a registration statement (including a prospectus) with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the offering to which this communication relates. Before you invest, you should read the prospectus in that registration statement and other documents Vonage Holdings Corp. has filed with the SEC for more complete information about the issuer and this offering. You may get these documents for free by visiting EDGAR on the SEC Web site at www.sec.gov. Alternatively, the issuer, any underwriter or any dealer participating in the offering will arrange to send you the prospectus if you request it by calling toll-free 1-866-869-5224."

We have a Vonage Forum thread in which you can discuss the IPO: The Vonage IPO Thread.

Speaking of the Vonage Voip Forum, let's go there now and see what you are talking about.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread called Verizon FIOS, RT31P2 and Voice QoS solution, Vonage Forum Member nprlisner describes how he fixed a problem which he had originally detailed as: "just installed FIOS this week, had cable. Having problems with calls during high network traffic (running VPN, Remote desktop at work, or speed test).

"When I run the speed test and make a call the I experience the following problems," he adds. "Fast busy signal after getting dial tone and making call. When someone is using phone, occasionally blocks access to Internet. Incoming calls are bounced to secondary line (cell phone) Incoming calls get busy signal Voice quality is excellent when working."

Then nprlisner adds that when he removed the DLink router out of the picture and configured the RT31P2 for PPPoE. using code: FIOS--->RT31P2--->PC he made a test phone call and then started the Speakeasy speed test to generate some traffic.

"The download test drops to 11614 and voice quality is still good. Speakeasy freezes when trying to run the upload test," he explains, adding that when he hung up the phone the speed test finishes.

"Upload bandwidth seems to be consumed by the RT31P2. Is there a way to throttle the RT31P2? I went to the Vonage web site and reset the bandwidth to 50kbps. Did not help," nprlisner adds.

Then he's posted the results of his testyourvoip speed test, along with what he did to fix the problem:

"I read a Forum posting that talked about QoS on the RT31P2. I found the setting in the configuration page Applications and Gaming Tab," explains nprlisner. "The default Voice QOS was 512 kbps.

"Ah ha," nprlisner explains, adding that he set Voice QoS upload to 128. He writes that he reconfigured all hardware per Dlink diagram (included in this post) and that fixed the problem.

Because brand new Vonage Forum Member bsego is looking for router recommendations, he's launched a Vonage Forum thread that he has titled Best Vonage Hardware in Need of Wireless Router.

"I'm moving in the next month and plan on using Vonage and I am trying to figure out the best hardware to purchase," explains bsego. "I will be using roadrunner cable modem. I will setup the modem, adaptor, and a wireless router in a 2nd floor room. I will use my laptop for internet on the first floor up to 50 feet away and through multiple walls."

Then bsego gets to the meat of his question, asking if the WRT54GP2 has good wireless range and work well with the Vonage service. "Or should I get the Motorola adaptor unit and a different wireless router with a better range? I can't find good information on the range of most wireless routers and have been burnt once before with a Belkin unit whose range was only 5 - 10 feet," he writes.

"I like separate units," Vonage Forum Member booma answers. "The adapters have enough to do without trying to be a router."

Booma then includes a diagram illustrating his setup.

And that reminds me:

Importing an Online Image Into Your Posts

They always say "a picture is worth a thousand words," right? Well, maybe a picture in a Vonage post that explains your issue or illustrates a solution can be a great help. This can be a photograph or an illustration from a vendor website.

There's an easy way to add graphics to your Vonage posts. When you are writing your post, just simply click on the Insert image icon. You'll find it on the second row of toolbars directly above the box where you write your post and just to the right of the "E" Internet Explorer icon. An Explorer User Prompt box. Enter the URL for the image you are wanting to import, and then click OK. The image link will now be imported into your post.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, !!
