Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll check out how two Vonage-sponsored race cars in two different racing series did yesterday, and find out about Vonage's sponsorship plans in another sport that involves speed. We'll also look at  two Vonage Forum threads, one about gateway network setup, another about static during Vonage calls, and how a new Vonage Forum Member fixed the problem.

Vonage's Two Co-Sponsored Race Cars Both Go For A Run

There's something about Vonage and sports. To emphasize its reputation for speed and dependability, Vonage co-sponsors two auto racing teams.

This past weekend was a busy one for both teams.

Driving the Vonage co-sponsored Car #1, Jim Beam/Vonage Dallara/Honda/Firestone, driver Michael Andretti and his son Marco finished in first and second place in the IndyCar Series Practice Speed run, held yesterday as part of time trials for the Indianapolis 500 that will be held over Memorial Day Weekend. In fact, Michael and Marco finished 1-2. Michael averaged 220.999 mph; and Marco 220.572.

"I was real happy. I was flat (full throttle) on the fifth lap," Michael said after the event. "The Jim Beam/Vonage car feels
really good. We're just sneaking up on it and haven't really done anything for speed yet. We're just doing some little things to get up to speed and so far, so good. 

"Our team (the Jim Beam/Vonage team) has never been together before," added Michael, "so we've got some bonding to do and I think today was a good first step."

And as for Michael's 19 year-old son Marco, well Marco said, It's going to be tough and I realize there are going to be ups and downs during the month. Sometimes I was probably a little quicker than they wanted me to be, but I figured if I showed them I was in control at that speed, things would go pretty smoothly.

''It (the time trial) enabled me to go out and work up to speed instead of just go flat out, which is what I normally would have done," Marco added.

Meanwhile, in Sunday's 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series at Laguna Seca, California, Alex Figge led one lap in the No. 89 Playboy/Vonage/Palms Casino Pontiac Riley for Pacific Coast Motorsports. Yet that great performance proved unsustainable for Figge and co-driver Ryan Dalziel. They finished 15th for the day.

Vonage Sponsors Another Type of Racing, Too

This one's not about "horsepower," but about "horses."

On Friday Vonage announced it is sponsoring the Preakness Stakes, which is one of the three big events in thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown series. the middle jewel of thoroughbred racing's prestigious Triple Crown series. The 131st running of the legendary Preakness Stakes will be held on Saturday, May 20 at the historic Pimlico Race Course in Maryland.

Terms of the sponsorship include commercial advertising and integration into the programming during both the Preakness Stakes and as you may have seen on Saturday, the Kentucky Derby broadcast. Vonage will sponsor the "Countdown to the Preakness Stakes" ticker on NBC Sport's website. 

"The Preakness is an annual tradition that has acquired a very loyal and devoted fan base and Vonage is excited to be associated with one of the premier events in thoroughbred racing," said Michael Tribolet, President of Vonage America Inc.

The Preakness will be broadcast on NBC-TV, as was the Kentucky Derby. By the way did you see Barbaro, the winning Kentucky Derby entry? He won by 6 1/2 lengths and lots of folks are wondering if he has it in him to win the Triple Crown.  


On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member kevin0999 has been considering his network setup options for Vonage service he thinks he will sign up for. To get some guidance and opinions, he's begun a thread entitled Will my gateway network setup work?

"I am a bit confused with the way Vonage would be hooked into my network," he writes.

"I have cable access. Cable comes into my cable modem, it then goes via a cat5 cable to network card in a UNIX computer. Then out from another network card in that computer to a hub," he explains further. Then all my other computers plug into that hub to have internet access. The Unix machine is the gateway for them. 

Now to kevin0999's question: 

"Can I setup Vonage from my hub? I can't really find much information how the Vonage boxes work. I don't really want it up in the chain where everything has to pass through it," he writes.

Only a couple of hours after kevin0999 asks his thread-opening question, Vonage Forum Member VonageTPA sees it and follows up with a post of his own.

"I'm assuming you're running NAT on the Unix box. If so, just connect up the Vonage adapter to the hub and it'll work fine," VonageTPA says. "I only run my Vonage adapters as Voip devices and not routers -- they're terrible routers. You might need to do some port forwarding if it doesn't automatically configure itself."

As to kevin0999's ultimate choice here, VonageTPA then tells kevin0999 it depends on what sort of firewall implementation he's  running.

Then, Kevin0999 took that as a question. He followed with a post in which he mentioned he was using a setup that doesn't involve a cable modem.

"Ah, so you're running something standard, which makes this even easier," VonageTPA writes. "There's actually a few people here who run Linux firewalls in conjunction with a Vonage adapter. I personally run a WRT54GS w/HyperWRT firmware, so I'm running the Shorewall firewall here. I have IPCop running at work (and Vonage works fine with it.)"

Then kevin0999 comes back and thanks VonageTPA for the info.

Well, that last thread was from kevin0999, so in keeping with that, let us spotlight a thread from fred0899. Fred's question, and the answer he finds out himself and offers here, is implied in his thread title: Unexplained Static?

"I just spent the last three weekends trying to figure out unexplained static on my line. I have Airport Extreme and a linksys RT31P2 Router," he writes. "I was about to simply cancel my (Vonage) subscription and go with a hard line for the extra $40 a month because it was so obnoxious. The static was very loud sometimes, but only slightly in the background others, and I thought I had it fixed 4 or 5 times only for it to come back.

"Anyway I figured it out and want to share in case anyone else has unexplained static," fred0899 points out.

"We moved our setup around about 2 months ago, and then this started," he tells us. We apparently mistakenly plugged the router's power cord in the cable modem and vice versa. They fit into each other and power each other well, but one outputs 12v and the other 9v... THIS CAUSED THE STATIC." 

And as to teachable moments, fred0899 tells us to make sure our power cords are in all the right places. He says that although this is a "rookie mistake help desk or owners manual will ever ask you to check this."

Two Points To Remember

Looking over the summaries for today's two highlighted Vonage Forum threads, I notice something in common. Both ended with an expression of courtesy. 

What I mean by that is that in the first thread, Will my gateway network setup work?, kevin0999 thanked VonageTPA for his support. Keep in mind that your fellow Vonage Forum Members are taking the time out to offer answers for fire. They are giving of their time to help you, so thanks is the right thing to do. Plus, it lets Members know that your problem has been resolved, and they can move on to helping the next Vonage Forum Member with their question(s).

Second, I find it really useful when, as in the post Unexplained Static?, Members who have solved a Forums-related issue they have dealt with post how they did it. When Members do this, it is a guide to others who may be facing some of the same problems and are looking for solutions.
