Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

May 4, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll find out about the official launch of the Vonage UTStarcom F1000 in Canada. We'll also look at  two Vonage Forum threads, one about Simulring and call forwarding with the Vonage service, and the other from a new Vonage user who is looking for some basic, step-by-step, setup info.

In The News

Vonage Canada Officially Launches the UTStarcom F1000 Handset

Vonage Canada and UTStarcom Inc., have just launched the F1000 handset for Canadian Vonage users.

The F1000 is a portable Wi-Fi handset configured with Vonage's Internet phone service. With the F1000, Vonage customers can make and receive phone calls from Wi-Fi enabled locations in Canada.

"The added flexibility provided by the F1000 handset makes Vonage Internet phone service even more attractive when compared to traditional phone service," says Bruce Robertson, director of product marketing and programs for
Vonage Canada. "With the added mobile capability provided by the F1000, consumers and road warriors only need one telephone while on the go, as they can access public wireless networks, like those in Fredericton and soon to be Toronto, or one of the nearly 1500 Wi-Fi hotspots, in Canada."

To use the Wi-Fi handset all Canada Vonage subscribers need to do is access to a wireless network. The F1000 Wi-Fi handset is configured with standard Vonage call features including: voicemail, call waiting, three-way calling, call forwarding, and caller ID based on phone book entries. The handset also includes standard features typically found with cell phones such as hold, mute, repeat dialing, distinctive ring options including: silent and vibrate and selectable ring tones.

In addition, users can also save Wi-Fi profiles for a number of Wi-Fi hotspots for ease of connectivity.

The F1000 supports a robust battery, with up to five hours of talk time, 50-100 hours standby and the ability to recharge
in two - three hours.

The F1000 Wi-Fi handset is currently available at www.vonage.ca with a suggested retail price of $159.99 with a $65 instant rebate.

Speaking of Canada, did you know we have a Vonage Canada Forum on our Vonage Forum? It's at http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum5.html. There are a lot of posts of primary interest to Vonage Canada customers, but many of interest to all Vonage users.

Talked myself into it. Let's go there now:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On the Vonage Canada section of the Vonage Forums, new member surfkitty has started a thread called With Vonage if I use SimulRing or Call forwarding.

"Does my computer have to be on? I go out of town quite often but I'd still like to transfer my (Vonage) calls to my cell," surfkitty writes. "Also what if my DSL box is off will it still route the calls to my call forward number or will it just go to voicemail?"

Vonage Forum Member sanditeguy saw surfkitty's question and answered it.

"Yes, even if your DSL box is turned off, it will still forward to the number you have in call forwarding," sanditeguy writes to surfkitty. "If you have no call forwarding number set, it will forward to your Network Availability Number, if you have it set up."

Because new Vonage Forum Member svHari76 wanted some basic Vonage setup advice, he decided to start a thread on the Vonage Forum. He's named this thread Can anybody tell me step by step proc to set up Vonage.

"I am new to this. Could you please elaborate the set up where to start etc....," svHari76 asks.

Well, svHari76, being a Vonage newbie is something that we all were at one point. Including expert Vonage Forum Member navydavy2001, who has seen your response and has furnished a detailed reply.

Here's the steps navydavy2001 has outlined for you, svHari76...

1. Disconnect the power from all devices on your network. This includes your Cable/DSL modem, and computer.
2. Disconnect any USB cables from the Cable/DSL modem, if present.
3. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Cable/DSL modem’s Ethernet port to the WAN port on the RTP-300.
4. Connect an Ethernet cable from the PC port, on the RTP-300, to the Ethernet port, on the computer.
5. Connect a telephone to the PHONE 1 port of the RTP-300 using a standard phone line.
6. Connect the appropriate Power cable to the Cable/DSL modem.
7. Wait about two minutes for the Cable/DSL modem to boot up, before continuing.
8. Connect the Power cable provided with the RTP-300 to the POWER port on the RTP-300.
9. Wait at least five minutes for the RTP-300 to boot up. The RTP-300’s status light will blink in sequence until it has fully connected to the Vonage network. There may be updates that need to be downloaded such as new firmware or changes to your features. Do not interrupt the configuration process by unplugging the power or lifting the receiver on your phone during the startup process. Interruption of the startup may result in interruption of service.
10. Once the RTP-300’s status light is off, the RTP-300 is ready to use.
11. Pick up your telephone receiver and listen for a dial tone. If you hear a dial tone, you have finished the installation and can begin making calls
12. Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN ports on the router to each of your computers. Power up each computer. Your Internet connection should work as it did before you installed the RTP-300.
13. If you have DSL, your DSL provider may require you to enter a username and password for PPPoE setup. Click here to learn how to enable PPPoE on the RTP-300. Not all DSL providers require PPPoE setup. For more information, please contact your DSL provider.

Hey, thanks navydavy2001!

Thanks For All The Page Views!

I knew April was a busy month here on the Vonage Forum, but I was curious to know just how busy it was.

In a word, very.

I went in to our site logs and learned that we had 1,435,961 page views- our second busiest month ever.

I was curious how many page views that total was per minute. But then I did the math-and turns out that in April we got one page view every 1.80 seconds- and that is counting weekends and the middle of the night!

The sun never sets on the Vonage Forum!

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature !!
